So the electronics kill it... I knew it would!

Like the link to the MkV where he says you can actually have fun  :star:

Well tiff is a driving legend so he knows best  :driver: and if the car is braking when I don't want it to that's bloody annoying

Of course his driving ability is very good
But then you will realise not to take everything that car reviewers say as fact. More like take it as pub opinion.
I drove back to back my GTI and the Mk7 GTI and the Mk7 drove tighter, was faster, turned in nicer, held apex better, had nicer noise, and rode more nicely.
Only thing I didn't like was the position of the cruise control.

Have you changed all the suspension bushes on your gti a brand new car always will feel tighter than say a 7 year old car they always do. I drove brand new cars every day and they are tighter but change your old bushes and the car will feel tight again. If you have changed your bushes and had your car set up i am sure your will be as tight as a ducks arse  :signLOL:

I said that yesterday  :happy2:

Yes, it is an IHI turbo. :happy2:

The MKVII is a totally different chassis to the MKV and uses the new MQB chassis module that is both stiffer and lighter than the MKV chassis, so overall the MKVII is around 60kg lighter. Combine that with more power and torque and it will feel much better. The MKVII you drove also could also have the performance pack and adaptive chassis control, which add to the driving experience. :happy2:

When I test drove one with the adaptive chassis but no performance pack, it really was a revelation.
However - most of a cars handling and response are in it's bushes. So who's to say that a BRAND NEW Mk5 wouldn't handle "similarly".
To be fair for the breadth of ability of the car the asking price suddenly becomes less steep. Yes you can buy a 135m for the same money (basically) but just because it's got 100bhp more, doesn't necessarily make it a faster car over a country road, or a nice place to sit (the inside of the 1-series is like Eeores bottom)

Anyway I had new front wishbone bushes with TT console bushes so fairly new bushes all round.

First report I've seen on the Mk7 that doesn't say it's an excellent car, some reckon the best Gti yet.

They do great reviews on 5th gear but I always tend to feel they only seem to concentrate on judging the car at it's absolute max, now if that's a supercar well fine but a bit harsh when your testing a hot hatch as I bet there are only a very small group of Mk7 owners that will ever get their cars anywhere near the limit he was driving at.

The way he was driving the mk7 round that track you would never drive like that on the road so the esc system probably wouldnt hinder you. If i was buying for track then i would buy a ed30 and have plenty of cash to spend on it, or preferably something rwd. The mk7 can only be better than the mk5 when its not pushed like that

I had a fully loaded MK7 GTi with DSG for the day yesterday and as you'd expect it felt tighter than my older mk5.  It was a great car to drive round the lanes and ticked all my boxes, it certainly had more of a bark from the exhaust when accelerating compared to my oem mk5 exhaust.

Shed loads of settings to mess about with but just left it in sport mode which was plenty comfy enough for me pottering around the Warwickshire lanes.  Very refined in D mode on the DSG and good fun in S mode

My only dislikes (and some of these are being picky)

1 - Overall shape and styling of the car (prefer the Mk5 and MK6)
2 - Very slightly reduced boot space over the mk5.  Space saver wheel panel sits way above the wheel in its well, I can only assume to make room for a full size wheel.
3 - Seats IMO are not as comfy as my std mk5.  maybe cause I'm not used to them
4 - The price

Given a choice between the two I'd grab the Mk7 over the mk5 (for daily driving).  But at the price fully loaded DSG's are selling at I'd buy a 135i.

Not given Chris Harris a run for his money with that review .

Whilst I tend to agree it doesn't *need* to be hot on track, is a bit annoying you can't switch everything off so you can at least have a go.

Lift off oversteer is what makes FWD cars fun. Sure 99% of owners won't use it, but I do and it makes me laugh.

Will I write off the mk7 as a dud? Nah, it's still on the list to replace Liz's car (with the P-Pack, for when I use it, obviously).

Same stuff we see every time "oh, it's not as good as my mkX - blah blah blah" resistance to change.

Bet you can switch it all off in VCDS... GTI has never been the fastest or best handling hot hatch has it.

.

Love the Mk4 R32 on the same episode.

The Mk7 does lift off oversteer if you turn the ESP off.
Mk4 chassis is soggy and soft compared to a Mk5 or 6. It's nowhere near as rigid.
The Mk4 R32 is the only Mk4 that handles somewhat decently.

And if anyone's driven an R32 the throttle response is HORRIBLE. Try driving it at 5-10 mph in standstill traffic. Not thanks.

It's the look of the Mk4 R32 I was referring to more than the drive (I've never driven one), perhaps I shouldn't if they aren't that good:

My next door neighbour has a turbo'd black Mk4 R32, currently running about 550bhp, more or less standard to look at depending on what wheels he's got on but boy oh boy does it sound good.

Shame the presenters are all soul-less boring people.

The decent car reviewers aren't on TV.

Chris Harris for Prime Minister

I do prefer to test drive and have my own opinion on a new car if it's something I'm thinking of buying, but I also like to know if Chris Harris has drove it cos he is a driving god :notworthy: :signLOL:

I'm still not sold on the mk7 looks, I do prefer the a3/S3
