Title: The meeting of two stags.
Post by: Top Cat on December 03, 2008, 02:40:37 pm
Ok both of them are going to the meet and have been talking about a bit of battle for ages.
I have left the option open to change your vote, just in case one of them goes mad and bolts on a big turbo, boys will be boys. :driver:

Joe has predicted his BHP at 250.  :chicken:
Phil is standard with DSG  at 230ish

Gentlemen start your voting.  :driver:

well if you want lots to turn up then we would have to advertise on other forums as a mk5golfgti.co.uk meet! this would get lots of interest and also advertise the site,

but it would also take away from the "friendly-ness" about the meet as most have met each other before  up to you pal  :happy2:

Im Backing Joe to the death. I think the extra torque he has on Phil will help him cross the finish line first! Don't let me down Joe!  :happy2: :jumpmove:

Im backing joe too, dsg is lightning quick at shifting but a manual can shift almost as quick. The launch is the important bit, dont want to launch from anything over 2000rpm imo or you will be sitting at the line wheel hopping.
I think joes extra power and torque will give him the edge.

We have over 150 members probably 200 by the time of the dual, so they both have there reputations riding on it. Everybody will be filming it and the loser will probably have to leave the site in shame.
I cant wait.

In batman styley. Will Joes nerve hold out on the line, Will Phil even turn up, Will Joes S3 cooler fall off half way up the strip. hmmm, should be a close one,  although no manual is a match for a quick shifting DSG

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=gmMNRQ1GJ3o

237BHP phylis v 250 Standard GTi Remaped stage 1, lets hope its more powerful then redRobins which ive chased before.DSG IS WORTH 30 BHP equive manual.

All down to the start and my new years gift to stand me in good sted  or Joe eats one too many at Krispys

i vote Phil lol

it should be a close one, joe's torque curve is higher but drops away up the rev range whilst my hold around 240-250ilbs ft accross the range, cars will only reach 100mph down a quarter mile, so he might get away quick but i should close in come the finish where the larger turbo and boost may hold out. Photo finish possibly?

Mmmm decisions, decisions...
I haven't voted yet as i'm not entirely sure as to who will get there results flash up first.. The biggest factor here will be who gets  off the line the best. If both cars are at the 60ft or even the 330ft marker level together, then I would fancy Phil's to nip it.. HOWEVER, if Joe gets his off the line without lighting up, the extra torque shove he will get will initially give him a nice lead, especially if he's on the ball with his reaction times, as Phil will suffer from the infamous DSG launch control pause, like this...
http://s242.photobucket.com/albums/ff284/lucachiarelli/?action=view&current=MOV00046.flv
I actually took my foot of the brake before Matt moved too..
If that happens I don't think Phil will pull that back on the 1/4 mile, as it will over to soon..
I for one can't wait to see it?   :jumping:

Why stop there TC, why not pair a load of other people off together (with similar spec/power) for a mini forum shoot out???  :jumping:

I don't mind who i'm paired with to be honest. It'll be a bloody good day either way..
JonnyC will probably have some fire breathing, tarmac rippling, 400+bhp engine that spits fuel at you by then..
Think me and Hurdy would be a fair comparison. He does have a fair few more mods, but not a MASSIVE power difference and they are both DSG too..
Or the Team dynamic crew could also fight it out.. (Me, John and Luca )

I'll go against anyone, me vs ben would be a good one, to see how much advantage the dsg gives over manual as our cars have identical mods .
Im not competetive, you will see as i usually like lining up against really really quick cars that i have no chance against just so i can hear them at full throttle next to me 8). Last time i was there, i went up against an e60 m5 with a full exhaust system, an rx7 with a tuned 5.7 corvette engine, full on yank muscle car that ran 10 dead .

Don't forget there was a massive headwind at Bruntingthorpe Neil, so in good conditions @ Pod you will easily see 13's. I only managed a 13.5 @ Inters and I lobbed the back seats out that day. So was a fair way off my best (13.2 when in full road trim)..
I see you can use launch control now mate..?  :happy2:

Phyllis have a warm up or two beforehand to make the tyres warmer and stickier and ensure the car's at maximum operability.

And if there's a tailwind, we can stick up a sail! :signLOL:

Depends how busy it is. first time i went i got 7 runs in and could of done more but the second time i got 2 runs in all afternoon
Best time to go is on a peak perfomance day which is when people are mainly testing different setups on their drag/road cars.
They are usually pretty quiet and you could easily get 10-15 runs done in a day.

The only improvement i'll think ill notice is the noise and a slight torque improvent. Not much like you say, but the car will look better with the milly on rather then the stock zorst. (looks to me mean more the (POWWWERRRRRRR) in clarksons tone of voice

Turbo backwards exhaust (£1000 approx) will see improvements to horsepower as thats bolted from the turbo. see horsepwer gains from this.

Catalitic converter back (or catback) is at the bottom of the Stock factory downpipe, around where the centre consol is in the front, in my case one of the silencers removed to get it the slightly harsher exhaust note and releaves some back pressure in the exhaust giving the engine less grief to chuck out the exhaust gases out da back of the car......... or something like that

too close to call it. 10bhp approx between the 2 cars, torque figure on joes is higher off the mark but drops off more at higher revs then the ed30 . Smaller turbo V larger turbo....... Manual V dsg....................  so many +'s to -'s. Canny call it

Looking foward to my jkm visit coming up.

This does sound interesteding (and fun of course).  Quite a decision but I think Joe might just take it with the extra torque and (slightly) quicker spool up (having driven remapped K03- standard K04 back to back). The DSG will no doubt give Phil an advantage but that all comes down to his take-off.

Place your bets...

Will the Milltek actually make any difference at all? Even a turbo back will only give about 10bhp and that won't be massively noticeable..

I wouldn't be to confident Phil..  Although I would expect a ED30 DSG to have an edge on a R32 when rolling, the 1/4 mile isn't a massively long race remember and with the bonus of 4wd off the line, if you go up against a well driven one you may struggle to catch it by the finish line..  :scared: Would be close..  :drinking:
Standard Mk5 R32 mid 14's
Standard-ish ED30 DSG Mid (or if driven bang on, possibly low) 14's
It'll be down to the pilot IMO, simple as really.. :happy2: Either way, we'll cheer you on..

You'd think so, but I recently went on an RR day with an R32 owner who got 312bhp and 270lbft when mine did 333bhp and 335lbft. Plus his weighed in at nearly 1600kg to my 1360kg

Joe's seemed to be the fastest of the GTi's on the forum, most others were struggling to get sub 15's.
