Because they are sh*t!!
I live in one of the worst hit areas and trying to get to work this morning and yesterday morning was a pain.
I have to go up a small hill just as I exit my drive and it was preety icy but all the neighbours cars were getting up fine, a host of other MKV diesels got up fine so I thought there would be no problem. First attempt got half-way and then it just got worse and worse!! The traction control just kept cutting the power so no matter how hard I pressed the pedal none of the ponies were being released. I tried all sorts of methods but evetually got up by travelling like a nut down my drive, drifting round my corner at the bottom and literally rolling up the hill.
I then got to the bottom of the road which goes quite steeply down hill. I pressed the brakes to slow down but nothing my car was sliding on ice towards standing traffic, I was adement I was going to crash. My car eventually ended up going sideways down the road missing parked cars by inches hurtling closer and closer to the traffic. How the hell I managed to stop and avoid rear ending my next door neighbours Range Rover I will never know. I literally stopped inches from his bumper. It was like something out of a movie :happy2:
I then eventually got out of my junction to again go up a small hill. Again it was struggling to get up. I crawled up at 2mph with a queue of traffic behind me giving me grief. A guy in an R32 was on the opposite side of the road as I travelled up the hill. He wound his window down and shouted 'You should have got on of these, I have had no problems this morning'

Pretty much exactly the same series of events happened to me in April, during that one Sunday of likr 10 inches of snow in an hour! Was on my way to Goodwood, and got caught on one of the twisty roads around the back-end of Farnham, Surrey. All filled with blind corners, and hills. Could not get up any hill to save my life!!!!!!!!
Kept seeing Subaru's fly past as if it was dry weather conditions! Unbelievable!!
Glad you didnt damage the car today Tom
-
you should have said to the guy in the r32 yours is only moving as its so fat :P
-
funny story!!  glad you didnt have a smash!! :innocent:
same up here but no snow yet!! just ice, driving at about 20mph and turn my steering wheel to go round a corner, car caries on in a straight line, finaly straighten up to see a police man coming towards me, go past him, look in my mirror and he slides on the same bit off ice straight into the curb    was funny as hell couse he was only going about 10mph and he just kept going and going and SMACK :fighting2: :signLOL:

Yeah I was wondering about this the other day when I was playing with the MFD, anybody know?? :happy2:

Eagle F1 GSD3's are great in the dry and wet put useless in the snow, when I had them on the LCR it was useless, couldn't get out the street, they just dont grip to start or stop!
-
mine wasn't too bad
-
Did you try turning off your ESP and putting the car in Sport Mode, thats what I was told to do in case of snow with the GTI. Its days like that I'd really miss my S4

Yeah, all that is is the ability to set a speed limiter 'beep' at any speed. It was designed, so that if you fitted winter tyres that were only capable of a lower max speed, you could set the 'beep' to remind you. I use it to remind myself when im going at silly speeds.

I thought I had kerbed both rims on the left hand side of my car because I was really close to the kerb going up a hill and I could hear some major scraping. I was not gonna stop though as I had a major queue of traffic behind me wondering what the nob in the white golf was doing! I quickly stopped at a layby and to my relief it was only the snow scraping against the rim. Phew! :happy2:

And as someone said above, turning TC off when driving in the snow helps SO MUCH!! Wish I had found out earlier when I was stuck!!
-
I drove mine with the TC of and it was much better :happy2:
-

I think the S3 sportback looks awesome in white. A small drop, set of 19's, black roof and mirrors and you're rockin' :happy2: :jumpmove:

I wondered when you might mention this Tom when I saw your Facebook status.. Close call by the sounds of it.. :scared:
I had a similar episode in my old CTR about 5 years ago. Was coming down a hill near me in the snow (as cars in front managed it fine, thought I would be ok :driver: ). As I got halfway down (only travelling about 3mph) my car just started sliding and that was it, out of my hands. I was heading straight for the junction with the main road :surprised: and no matter what I did (including trying to mount the curb) it just slid. Ended up sliding sideways onto the main road and coming to a rest and thank fook that exact min there was no traffic. :innocent:
The car that was approaching further down the road must have wondered what the hell I was doing, as I ended up facing the wrong way on his side of the road..
Biggest problem is, cars with wider wheels will always struggle as they have a lot wider surface area on the snow/ice. That's why old sheds with skinny wheels that cut through the snow better make you look like a right tit... :P

ive been fine these last few days! my W button has served me well!
-
I drove yesterday on snow and ice, and it was fine, slide it around a bend for fun.
-
i struggled to get over the bump coming into my drive as im lowered i have to go over it in 1st gear,
