Title: Steering clunk
Post by: Jap4447 on February 03, 2014, 08:54:35 am
When moving the steering wheel backward and forward quickly while stationary it clunks and I'm sure something clunks when going over bumps slowly. Anybody had this?

Nearly £1500 but that was for a new VW GEN3 steering rack, subframe and wiring loom as the Gen2 rack is no longer made. In my case the car is still under warranty (RAC) covering the first £1,000 so i paid the difference. If i had to choose and didn't have a warranty i would get a reconditioned Gen2 rack costing £400-£500ish.

What about the sub-frame bolts and spacers or top mounts and bearings?

Going to get it up tonight and have a look what's going on, it's under warrenty but they have told me if they do diagnostics and it doesn't happen to be covered then I will be charged £70  . The other thing is it's just had a new steering rack so I wouldn't of thought it was this?

Diagnostics won't show up a faulty mechanical part..

Try telling vw this. It's part of there protocol. Do they not class manual fault finding a type of diagnostic?

Could do.
Last time I checked they charged you £80 for a "diagnostic check" which was.... a vagcom scan

Included subframe bolts (not sure about spacers) I provided top mounts, the old ones where perfectly fine but they were replaced anyway.

Got it up tonight and to me it sounded like it was coming from within the rack housing. Is this the possible fault? And I definitely feel something loose when going over bumps slowly.

Just got the call from VW to confirm it's the steering rack and needs replacing again from around 5 months ago. Why would a brand new one fail again within that time?

Was the faulty rack fitted by VW or provided new by another garage?
