Title: My diamond black GTI....now with Ramair CAI
Post by: BarberVW on February 09, 2014, 09:04:44 pm
Eh up,

Bought this end of December 2013 as a bit of a Christmas present to myself.
2006 GTI in diamond black perleffekt, standard with 71,000 miles, and a big spec.

So there she is.

So far I've added amber sidelight bulbs, LED number plate bulbs, pressed metal plates, GTI seat plaque inserts, and tidied a few bits up.
It's just had it's coilpack recall done on Saturday and it starts a lot less rough now, generally smoother etc.

Just trying to keep it clean through this winter weather for now.

Any suggestions on what bits to tinker with etc, please feel free to let me know as I don't really know what I'm doing with mk5's.

Oh - this was my last car:

A wee little 1.4 with 60hp....the difference is night and day.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks mate. Just the usual stuff really - i'm no scene stopper.

Looks a well spec'd car there mate and clean too.

Cheers, yeah it has everything I was looking for (and more!) except for a sunroof!

Thanks gents, means a lot, I do all the cleaning myself. Looking forward to the warmer weather so I can give it a proper going over. Black cars - the biggest love hate relationship of them all.

It just looks super tidy  :happy2:

Thank you  :drinking:

When it had it's coilpack recall, VW gave it one of their health checks and turns out my wishbone bushes are worn, which makes sense as there is a slight knock at low speeds so this'll probably be the next work. Function before form  :sad1:

Best to get these things out of the way before the nice weather comes so funds can go towards mods!

Hi,

See below for results of VW health check-

Can anyone advise whether this gives opportunity to upgrade anything? Different bushes / replacement wishbones etc?
Would this be a good time to install an anti lift kit?

Thanks

Hi, I just rang up VW service department at local dealers, asked if there were any outstanding recalls against my reg, he dithered about a bit then said yes and confirmed it was for coilpacks, easy peasy. There will be a small square sticker on the boot floor under the carpet if your car has already had it with a dealer stamp and some codes on.

Hope this helps...

Looked under the engine cover today for the first time which was fun to get off and on.
Prompted into action by what lay beneath-

Doesn't appear to be the latest revision PCV unit so I'll be updating that in the coming weeks.

Title: Re: My DBP mk5 GTI.....PCV Drama
Post by: BarberVW on April 04, 2014, 08:13:49 pm
Ok so today was the day I decided to update the PCV on my car to the latest revision. The Saharan sands had subsided and the parts were in at the local stealer's, so I set about it.

The price of the gasket really caught me off guard
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi58.tinypic.com%2F106ndad.jpg&hash=d374a07b6a557ebfb512205b3b5c81bb01fc936a)

Shiny new bits

Old, possibly factory PCV in situ:

Unbolted to reveal.....MAYO?!

The old valve internal shot
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi58.tinypic.com%2F2s1oc1u.jpg&hash=676d87ea93ffe9483a9cd5a623cd0fa2c993a062)

I then popped the breather hoses off to inspect those. The short one that connects to the inlet manifold was fine, but the longer one that disappears down into the depths looked like this....
Properly blocked with mayo....

Got it off the car (with great difficulty since there isn't much room where it connects to the engine lower down) and irrigated it to clear it out

The gunk seemed endless.

All clean and thoroughly dried

The re assembly begins.

New valve on....

And all back together
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi59.tinypic.com%2Fegpfll.jpg&hash=2ed730a0e49e4e94123bd4611c40ae3b0bf748f2)

My main concern now is why there is so much emulsified oil in and around the PCV system? There is some on the oil filler cap but that's pretty normal, but there is also a bit on the dipstick!
The car hasn't used a drop of coolant and there are no signs of oil in the header tank. Can anyone offer any insight into what may be going on here?  :scared:

Thanks for reading

Quick pic to bump the thread -

Car is in at VW to have both wings replaced under warranty with 100% contribution on the 7th.
Had a bit of a bump into a low wall in a car park and ruined my front bumper so getting them to do that at the same time so it all matches as best as possible.

Why did you upgrade the PCV to the latest version? Is the old one poor quality?

Why did you upgrade the PCV to the latest version? Is the old one poor quality?

Just a bit of maintenance, didn't need to do it but they are known to deteriorate over time. It made no difference to how mine ran so can only assume the original was fine but I know it's done now. Still got to do the DV but all in good time.

See here (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,44709.0.html) for more info on PCV system and DV.

Got the car back Friday afternoon from Parkway VW Derby. It had :

- Both wings replaced and painted @ 100% contribution from VW
- Complete replacement front bumper inc. grills etc as hit a low wall in a car park the other week
- New radiator support panel (bit which basically holds the front of the car on) as I managed to crack it on the wall

My front splitter is now colour coded, and also put a few extra bits on.

Not a cheap do, but the car looks fresh now.

The damage:

Got it back Friday afternoon and added these:

Genuine carbon fibre mirror covers. These are not the cheaper stick on covers, but complete replacement cover units.
Also smoked inpro side repeaters added underneath.

Honda S2000 aerial:

I then couldn't do much else as i was working all weekend, but yesterday I gave it a decent detail and took plenty of photos to show off its refreshed appearance.
Enjoy.....

I wish I had the patience to detail my car that well... Fancy giving mine a good clean?  :P

Thanks mate I'm really happy with it.

They didn't do too badly at all. As much as I enjoy cleaning cars, it's taxing enough keeping on top of this one, take yours to a pro detailers and then just maintain it, its worth the money!

Looks fresshhh.... :happy2: I can imagine how pricey it would've been  :signLOL:

Wallets still recovering
--------------------------------------------------------

So as my front wishbone bushes and console bushes have been in need of replacement since before I bought the car, thought it was about time I finally did something about it as the front end is starting to feel dangerously sloppy.

First thing-

Uprated solid TT console bushes from dark side developments. Thought about polybushes and anti-lift but just don't think my driving justifies the cost of them.

Once these are on I can get my coilovers on as well  :scared:

Car has just had its 80k mile major service, cambelt, water pump, all wishbone bushes replaced, and new CV boot from main dealer.

Newest addition to go on :

Unlikely to see much more progress over the winter months, but who knows.

Thanks for looking!

Hi Numec, got them from a seller on eBay called vcstickers a few weeks back, he doesn't seem to have anything for sale now, might be worth a pm?

Thank you

Cheers mate, it's a pain in the ar*e but well worth it.

Thanks, I need to pull my finger out and get them installed, most likely early 2015 when the weather shows signs of improvement. I got the mirrors off someone on here a while back, no idea of there origins sorry!

Looks great and very clean! Where did you get the number plates from? Look good!

Thanks Jaye, unfortunately it's not always this clean  :jumping: number plates are eBay item 321413552350 great quality.

Thank you very much, they are 'so far so good', fairly scratch resistant (I tested them  :P) and as you say a fair price which is what made me try them. Still not sure if I like them tbh but it's no trouble to swap them back if you don't like them really, just extra expense. I'm still tidying it up and funds have been tied up getting it mechanically sound, 2015 should be the year of some proper mods.

Ive noticed a lot of posts lately about people taking their cars into vw with rust problems, is there a lifetime warranty on paint that i dont know about? my car is almost immaculate apart from the smallest bit of rust just in the small gap underneath the rear side window.... could this be sorted?

Car looks great by the way, my pirelli is hibernating in the garage till summer, cant wait to get it back out after seeing yours

Clean car pic to get started:

Now, there's been a bit of interest recently surrounding the ramair cold air intake due to it being a bit of a bargain buy on sale at £155. Well I went and bought one!

The kit comes with 70mm diameter black hard piping, good quality black silicone hoses and black anodized jubilee clips. Not to mention a foam filter bigger than my head. It also has a black bracket which I can't figure out where the heck it goes but it's all fairly solid so not to worried. It also comes with a heat shield which I thought made this kit excellent value, it does however come perilously close to one of my coolant pipe: I've had to add some rubber edging to it to minimise the risk of the metal edges chafing through and causing me a headache.

Pic fitted:

It makes some decent sounds:

I have nothing to compare this to other than the stock airbox, so can't say how it compares to other aftermarket solutions, but I have no grumbles whatsoever for the price. It has affected the old mpg negatively, but I put that down to the car needing to be mapped to match the new hardware, which is coming soon.

The butt dyno tells me there is some loss of torque low down but it's dwarfed by its new capabilities towards the top, it span the wheels in the dry in 3rd the other day which has never happened before.

If anyone had any questions or comments fire away, hopefully have more updates soon.

Thanks for looking!

I'd be interested to see how the MPG is effected after a re-map, and how you get on with the RamAir CAI after a few thousand miles.

I'll keep my eye on it and post findings as and when. Do you know something I don't? What happens in a few thousand miles  :scared:

I say a few thousand so that it's enough time for everything to settle in, plus that lovely feeling you get when you fit something new goes and you start fully understanding it. It's why I've not written a review on my anti-roll bars and full SuperPro bushes kit, giving it enough time to really see what it's like to live with.
