Title: John's Tornado Red GTI. *Updated with BLQ's*
Post by: letlifeburn on February 10, 2014, 09:20:15 pm
I've said hello already so I thought I'd start my little build thread, if you can really call it that. With work I aint really spent much time in it yet.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fy138%2Fletlifeburn%2FPhoto24-01-2014115009am_zps14d7fda2.jpg&hash=a97bdad7b3f158c7aab1ec63405e29a6915b8cbc)

So I bought this the other week, Tornado red GTI DSG, with 49k on the clock. The times I have driven it, its awesome. My last car was a Volvo C70 T5 but the gearbox went within a year of owning it, which should of probably put me off another auto, but DSG's have the lowest miles on them from what i noticed whilst looking. I'll also say I thought the red would make me stand out, but I've noticed from these forums most of the GTI's are red too.

I do have a couple things planned. First off is changing the front and rear badges, the rear has "whiteworm", then ill repainting the black bumpers all round, installing a cruise control stalk, just simple stuff really.

Eventually I'll get hold of the monza alloys, and start with the remapping, and exhaust mods and stuff, but for now after spending money on the car, I'm keeping the changes small and cheap.

First thing i did was get hold of a new front badge, nothing wrong with my old one, but because of the white worm on the back, which Brookesb32 is making me a new one, i thought id changed them both to match.

This is how it started.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fy138%2Fletlifeburn%2FPhoto07-02-2014055539pm_zps17b4b0df.jpg&hash=25636c94f144b48e09e0b56b9190a75e69c242c6)

And this is what i changed it too.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fy138%2Fletlifeburn%2FPhoto08-02-2014060732pm_zpsf3aa275f.jpg&hash=44ae54eee06929ae7aa3d98465cd750c247533c5)

Again being a chef, Ive had no daylight time to actually get it on the car which sucks.

nice ride! what interior specs etc :)?
Title: Re: John's Tornado Red GTI.

Just put them in the other thread. Inside is completely standard, rcd300, no heated seats, no cruise control, and no armrest. Its the checker print seats too, which when i first saw on the pics for the GTI's i was looking at, i thought people were trying to pass off normal golfs as GTI's, it wasnt until i looked at MK1's that i realised it was a throw back, which did make me love it.

Thats the only pic i have of the car too, im gonna try to get some more when i actually have free time and some sunlight to take them.

Nothing major, just got finished early from work today so had some daylight at last to play around. Finally got the front badge on.

Original, Which I will probably look into selling now:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fy138%2Fletlifeburn%2FPhoto16-02-2014050907pm_zps3b7dd44b.jpg&hash=6d0e6fcc3ccc949364fce87d377bd3446d15e9f4)

And the new one:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fy138%2Fletlifeburn%2FPhoto16-02-2014052800pm_zps65098039.jpg&hash=8dbb77653bb066ccf4aa428da9ca611fce1de542)

The colour isnt spot on, but thats because i didnt use the actual paint colour, i used a matte red spray paint can instead, more to keep in with the matte effect grill and stuff. Hopefully should be fitting the rear badge tomorrow if it shows up, cheers simon! and also get the Forge DV on too.

Step 5 and 6  :happy2:

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,10027.0.html

Well Simon it arrived and i wasted no time going out and fitting it, was a lot trickier to get the trim off than that guide said!! After about 30 mins of pulling and tugging it finally came off, then I had the joy of trying to get the wiper lose to get to that 3rd bolt. But im super happy with how the back looks now. So good to have matching badges.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fy138%2Fletlifeburn%2FPhoto17-02-2014010447pm_zpsb8b017f2.jpg&hash=3f8d94ef0e48355320f90a7d92a1f2697eb34457)

And then this is the old one, tore the metal badge off straight away, needs a good sanding down now like, but im thinking about maybe painting it up as a spare or something.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fy138%2Fletlifeburn%2FPhoto17-02-2014012011pm_zps8e227208.jpg&hash=9ef9b197085ecad1b363779b0e0361009d5d401d)

You have been busy! And yep that trim can be a right beehatch to remove, those clips are super strong.

Looks great though  :driver:

A bit of filler and you could spray straight over the base, or you could sand down the badge and spray/wrap that to have a nice spare

Top job John

so how do you get the 3d badges to stay on them then? or can you not on this style of handle?

The old handle has a different base, as you notice the badge is stuck to it rather than clipped to it. You could wrap or spray the badge and re-stick like this,

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa358%2FBrookesb32%2F2297CEEB-FCE5-4ADB-BAA9-759A90CB2157-1927-000001B6486D9A64_zps07fc932b.jpg&hash=3318386ae08966fb7c483287105dc629f6138c12) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/Brookesb32/media/2297CEEB-FCE5-4ADB-BAA9-759A90CB2157-1927-000001B6486D9A64_zps07fc932b.jpg.html)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa358%2FBrookesb32%2F19F71D05-0BEC-47CC-A9E8-8552EDB7A375-1534-0000014758A839E2.jpg&hash=9371ed53f56665ffb017939b2826f850feacd84f) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/Brookesb32/media/19F71D05-0BEC-47CC-A9E8-8552EDB7A375-1534-0000014758A839E2.jpg.html)

or stick a 3D generic 110mm VW badge on top
This one i happened to wrap first - stuck directly the base
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa358%2FBrookesb32%2FC78D75E6-2527-412D-A3E3-96A5CDEE607D-3431-000002E06A0740B1_zps6baefb82.jpg&hash=8f9d93f99a6e9c08cebcbfee1a6a1d64352bbdba) (http://s1193.photobucket.com/user/Brookesb32/media/C78D75E6-2527-412D-A3E3-96A5CDEE607D-3431-000002E06A0740B1_zps6baefb82.jpg.html)

Or with lots of effort get the dremel out and trim the edge of the base and the inside of a genuine mk5 3D badge and wedge that on

Got the car lifted this aft. Cousin got some ramps from work, then forgot the car is quite a bit lower than the tranny vans they get up on them, so had to take apart the shelving in his garage as support beams to get me up. Then had the struggle of loosening off the bolts for the DV, which I have the 'B' version, does anyone have a video of the 'G' version just so I can hear the sound?

After a bit of work we finally got it off and fitted the Forge DV, now I'm not sure I like it to be honest, my cousin said it sounded ace, to me it sounded like a bus, and its even making the "tsss" noise at 1500 revs and less in some instances, is that normal?

Ill try and get a video to see what you guys think of it.

I do like the sound the 'B' gave off though, i just wanted to slightly amplify it, but I think I've gone to far, its a nice sound, but when its making a noise at 1k I feel like a tw@ haha even if it is a really quiet "sssssssss"

I've heard mixed things then, I thought a lot of people were running the 'D' because it was better mechanism or something? If I was to put the standard 'B' 'D' or 'G' valve on and a new intake would that make the nice standard GTI "tssss" but a little bit more prominent?

Go for a G valve with a nice induction kit buddy.

I might be selling my RAM air kit if interested. Nice induction and tsss sound.

Cant say I've seen them before, pics on your build thread I presume?

I looked at the Forge Twintake just because of that odd sound, but then I saw the £400 price and thought maybe not. I have to be really careful, I've got a two year warranty, which I'm thinking of cancelling, so I cant really change anything which is really annoying me.

again nothing major to update on, shifted the stereo to one of the new forum members in York. Used the money to travel over to liverpool and buy some Audi 18" Speedline split rims, need a good refurb which i now need to save for. Then ill be sticking up my genuine VW 17" monzas and tyres to cover the cost of it all, but have no idea how much theyre worth.

Only other news worthy bit is my car hit the 50k mark, hopefully another 50k to come problem free.

Not a very excited thread im aware, but ill get there slowly.

Again not a major update really. Been busy working and not really had much time or money to spend on anything i wanted to do to car. I did however a couple months now buy a set of Audi 18" Speedlines from a forum member, and only just got round to taking them into get refurbed, so i cant wait to have them on car.

As you can see, one of them was trashed, no idea what happened to it for it to be that bad, Does mean the 17" Monzas on my car will be up for sale when i get these sorted. Anyone know a reasonable price for them?

I was trying to shift them because theyd just sat under the stairs for months.

The centres are definitely going black, and so far ive got red for the outside lip, im trying to keep a whole black and red theme going with everything, so i might try and find some black and red center caps for them too.

I know that colour way wont be to everyones taste, but i think itll look really nice when its done.

Oh my, that doesnt look as bad as i thought it was going too, i dont have painted skirts or anything, i guess having the polished lip, would mean if i wanted to change colour at any stage, i could just repaint the center instead of having to do the whole thing, im guessing you have to buy the gold bolts in? or can they be painted?

Well its been a while since I updated my car.

Little heads up, had them BBS speedlines that I had refurbed, never put them on car, finally got rid last night for some Rotiform BLQ reps. 19" 8.5j, looked scary big in back of the lads van when he came round to house last night.

Still not sure if im going to keep the colour, or change them at a later date. Came with 235/35 on rear, and front are 215/35, not much stretch but i love how the front ones look.

Only future update at present is i should be getting some FK Highsport Coil overs from the lad who swapped me these. Now ive got a full set of BBS Monza 17" with tyres I need to get rid of to pay for them.
