Title: Hacked off with my Edition 30 and rust!
Post by: edition30jmr on February 16, 2014, 12:54:13 pm
Hi guys, I'm really hacked off with my recent purchase. I brought a 2007 Gti Edition 30 last September with 38K on the clock looked mint etc sounded great no problems, the last few weeks of bad weather have took its toll on my eddy. I found out it needed two new wings due to slight rust and also I've just discovered the sills have started to rust where the wings join the sills and the bottom of the wing. What should i do, is it worth contacting VW etc? Or do they have to have an inspection every year etc for the paint/corrosion guarantee to apply?

Should i expect this rust to occur again this winter? Will i get any rust anywhere else?

Thanks,

Jay :scared:

Get in touch with VW , is it full VW history on your car ? If so it is likely they will do it for free or if not make a large contribution to the bill - Look elsewhere on here for other threads about it , theres a big one with mnay pages somehwere

Mine is getting a wing soon, VW are paying up to 70% though, whereas my last 3 wings (two mk5's) were free.

Word was they pay up to 50% for over seven year old cars and 70% for under seven years old, for the wing rust issue.

Okay thanks Guys, I'm going to give them a call early next week and get this sorted out asap! Any ideas how much it would cost for two new sills etc if they wouldn't pay? And unfortunately my car isn't a full VW service history car :(

Jay. :sad1:

Hi yes full service history, I'm going to give VW a call tomorrow, and what are these CF wings?

Also this rust has made me slightly worried, has anyone else had this happen more than once after having new wings and sills etc?

And is the car likely to be rusty underneath or go rusty underneath or anywhere else in the future?

Thanks

The reason the wings rust is due to poor manufacturing design - they put a piece of sponge I between the wing and liner and did it up too tight so water stays there and rusts inside out. Rest of the car pretty solid (although boot around the handle on the inside can also go)

The problem is getting VW to actually admit to the problem and repair it under warranty.
They don't.
They blame it as a mechanical issue. It's very, very hard work to argue with them. And for the price of having two new wings sprayed or yours repaired (if it's very very early they can usually be repaired) then you have to question yourself whether it's worth the stress.

I have gone through the process twice and both times it caused me no end of issues.

When I had my mk5, and I think this was prior to their rule change on value covered, I had both my front wings changed - a year apart at different VW dealers (first one closed down) both for free, seems dealers do differ

My near side wing is properly rusting now, I've trimmed the offside sponge and will Change the NS wing in the spring for circa 100 quid... A lot cheaper than VW best contribution offer.

Hi guys as you'll probably guess VW didn't give a sh*t and fobbed me off, so I'm taking it to a local garage, 2 new wings (modified/no foam so it doesn't absorb the water etc and plastic adjusted so it doesn't rub and sills sorted etc he quoted me £1100 which i don't think is too bad, and I know they do a super job as I had my bonnet took back to bare metal and completely resprayed last September when I got the car from there!

Thanks for all the help guys I'm booked in for next month!

Speak with vw customer care, they are normally really helpful. Plus try another dealer as each are different  :drinking:

Okay thanks for your help il try again tomorrow, they told me I would have to go to Shrewsbury which is an hour an a half journey just for them to assess it then I'd have to go there and back a few more times if they accepted and I might end up paying 50% of the costs anyway!?   :drinking:

Sounds like rubbish to me. For my first wing I had to book to see the guy who looked after the rust claims and paint checking but after the one visit the only return was to have the work done. Second wing at another dealer I mentioned it before a service and a few days later got a call saying thy had spoken to customer care and would be covering it
