Hi folks,
Just joined the forum today after reading many posts that came up during google searches. I'm looking for my first ever GTI and absolutely love the Mark 5. Seen a few recently and am still waiting on the right one.
I did have a question though and wonder what your thoughts are, I've seen an '07 5 door in black with DSG and only 30k miles on the clock. Until I started looking for a Golf Gti I didn't know what DSG was, so googled it and to be honest the negative stuff about mechatronics and failures etc put me off. Having driven it DSG seems awesome. Anyway, I now know this particular car had the mechatronics unit replaced 16k miles ago. So, would you touch it or avoid it? On a test drive I didn't notice anything that was any different to other automatics that I've drive, but I did notice the differences in gear change etc

I had an Edition 30 DSG and that had mechatronics replaced under warranty, It did 15K fine for me before I sold it and I was stage 2 (316bhp).
If you like it and want it then go for it, you can always get a warranty to cover it if you need to.
I recently ordered a new Golf with DSG :happy2:

I think it should be ok...
At 40k the DSG oil will need changed though

A set price at vw (I believe)
Can't remember how much though. :happy2:

About £150 I think?
Mine was done before I bought it so dont know exactly

I always said I wouldn't buy an auto
Test drove a mk5 and the 6 with DSG and fell in love.
I drive a manual works van every day so thought I'd buy a DSG and absolutely love it
If it feels right buy it
-
Yep I'd also recommend it, very happy with mine having only owned Manuals before. VW menu price for the oil change is £179 which is cheaper than some independents.
-
Smoother, quicker changes and of course there faster than manuals

Thanks for the reply's. Much appreciated. I read somewhere about the servicing of the DSG needing done at 40k.
I'll keep thinking then lol. Like the car but not the idea of the bill if it goes wrong again lol

DSG oil and filter at the moment is £179. :happy2:
My mechatronics unit was changed under warranty been fine since, no issue at all.
-
If it had a megatronics unit at 16k surely it would have had the oil changed as well, I thought VW did this as a precaution. The other option is to negotiate on the price and get the DSG oil change thrown in. It won't hurt to have the oil changed earlier. I was told that a lot of DSG problems start with cars that do lots of short journeys?

Thanks for all the reply's, I've noticed on here that a lot of the "DSG problem" threads seem to be a year or two old and wonder if it's not as big an issue as I first thought.
Managed to knock the price down but have been told about a manual Ed30 coming along soon as well :-)

Had my old TDI DSG A3 from new, did 60k on the box, oil changed at 40k, never had a problem. My ED30 is an 07, with 48k which has had the oil changed twice, so far so good :happy2:
Love DSG, couldn't live without it.

+1 for DSG. If you liked in on a test run, you'll love living with it.

I have had my car for a few months now and must admit, i did not think much about the dsg until owning one,
its very livable and my car has 96k FVWSH including cambelt/dsg services on time etc and its going strong (might be up for sale soon if you are interested as need a bigger car)

I have to say after everything I initially read about DSG problems I'm pleased it doesn't appear as much an issue as first thought. Gonna see what this Ed30 is like and if I don't take it I may well revisit this DSG one I drove as it's still available. Thanks again for the posts.
