Hi everyone!
Had a bit of time on my hands this week and ended up trying my hand at doing some personalised stitching for my MK6 flat bottom mfsw with boring black stitch.
Was going to go for one colour but decided to go all out and go 2-tone. Think Iv only seen 1 on here with 2 tone stitch so pretty rare thing this!
Took my time as I didnt want to ruin a perfectly good wheel. Seriously took a LONGG time on it, guestimate at 7hrs to get the pattern to my OCD liking, integrate into the factory stitch , lay on the custom stitches, take out the slack and tie off the ends. (IO grade suture knots no less ;) )
Heres a couple of in progress pics, and then the finished article. Wrapped the leather in film to prevent damage incase your wondering! Would be easy and quick to rip off the factory stitch and then do custom work, but the mod it then not easily reversible, whereas integrating into the factory stitch like Iv done means this is not an issue but takes longer.
Im pretty chuffed but let me know your thoughts on this result, use red or silver buttons with this red/silver combo, other colour combos. Was thinking if there was interest in this I could do this for others but the time factor is immense to do it properly and not to mention, my fingers are pretty tough now haha!!
Thanks, Omar

-
Sweeeeettt!!! :notworthy:
-
looks good fella well done :congrats:
-
That is absolutely awesome! I wish I had you're ability and patience!
-
really liking that, very talented mate
-
What would you charge to do this for others? :popcornsoda:
-
Does look incredible fair play. Well done :notworthy:
-
I like that a LOT! :congrats:
-
Thanks everyone :happy2: !!! Im glad I took the plunge .. Just waiting for mfsw airbag wiring before I pop it in my mk6! Ill take pics when its in my car!!
Im not sure what I'd charge in all honesty.. materials are essentially negligible in cost so its just price for my time/effort and posting costs. Already got the tools for the job!
If anyones interested, then post up what you'd like: colour (or colours if you want 2-tone) , style of stitch ( single or double-stitch) to gauge interest.
FYI mine in pics is 2-tone double stitch. I can do double stitch in 1 colour too. For single stitch you can specify the larger or smaller zig-zag . Mine shown has silver in large zig-zag in silver and small zig-zag in red so you can have an idea of looks.
Also before I do anything, if this does go ahead, then I'll need admin's green light.

I'm right in thinking your just weaving it through the original stitching,

Yep. Means the mod is reversible, stitch tension not lost, leather remains uncreased, no extra perforation of leather and keeps it strong.
Just the right amount of contrast stitching IMO , I wouldnt rip out the factory stitch for the extra effort, more time and results no different and less of the above benefits.

Looks amazing dude
-
We'll done that man looks great :congrats: :congrats:
Scott :happy2:

It's good. But I bet you can't out a fruit pastel in your mouth without chewing

Touché my friend! I bet your right n all !!
-
What tools do you need for this? Is it difficult to do ? Very nice.
-
Blunted needle, strong thread, crochet hooks full set, medic grade suture kit tools and a huge heap of time and patience. Id recommend keeping plasters close by if you think you might stab yourself! Didnt happen to me but it can happen!!!
-
Superb
-
Thanks!
My airbag wiring has arrived today but wondering if the black gloss or brushed chrome buttons/trim looks better?
Suggestions?
-
Decided to keep the gloss black.
Hope you like the finish!!
So this was my car before any interior mods:

So along with custom steering, the ED35 knob and handbrake , gloss black radio/climate surround, stainless steel pedals.
After everythings in (Leathers to come and I know it needs a clean too!) :

Mate that is seriously beautiful! You've done a great job!!!
-
Looks smart dude
-
Thanks everyone! Really pleased. Am still in 2 minds about the gloss black or brushed chrome buttons though. Question of going with the gloss black theme or contrasting with silver
-
Did you do the gloss black yourself?
-
Top job. Like it a lot :happy2:
-
Looks mint
-
I did the surrounds for the climate and radio myself. The buttons are Genuine Golf R20 ones.
-
7hrs! Some patience lol
Did you do it with the leather still on the wheel?
-
That wheel is absolutly stunning :happy2:
-
Yep with leather on the wheel.
-
I like this alot, fair play mate. :congrats:
-
Awesome, top work! I'd happily get my wheel done by you if you ever consider doing others!
-
Thanks a lot! I am contemplating it and for running a single stitch £50 or 2 stitches for £100. Add return postage on top too. Like I said before its not material cost but time factor as it takes ~8hrs so need to be aware of this. Turnaround time is week to 10 days as I have a full time job also.
-
Sounds fair! It would take me longer to decide what colour stitching than what it would for you to do it . I'll definitely keep it in mind :happy2:
-
Really top job Omar....
:congrats: :congrats:
-
I want you to do this throughout my car :booty:
-
that's a great job! looks sweet
-
Little update: I am now ready to offer this as a service. £50 for a single stitch and £100 for double stitch and return postage on top. Choice of 32 thread colours. Week to 10 days turnaround.
PM if interested :happy2: Regards!

Become a trader and off you go :happy2:.

PM'd you Alex :happy2:
And anyone who wants this service please make yourselves know on the thread so I can gauge interest :driver: . ( No point me becoming a Trader if theres no interest in this trade!! )

50 quid for 8hrs Labour, do you do mechanical lol.
Biggest problem you'll face is turn around time. People usually can't let there cars sit that long. People hate leaving it over night with us.

£100 double stitch , 8hrs.
Single stitch £50 for 4hrs.
Could send a spare steering wheel while the works being done but means more posting costs to and fro. Another idea might be to do an exchange basis but too many variables so not keen on that.

Custom LED illumination and recoloured needles. R20 look.

Top work bro
-
Really like the dash!
Much work involved? Re-soldering of leds or just swapping out bulbs?
Either way looks tip top :happy2:
-
Was an evening's worth of fiddling, desoldering old LEDS, resoldering new ones, stripping cleaning and recolouring the needles. Need to be so careful when taking off and refitting the needles or the motor/actuator driving the needles break really easily. Practiced on mk5 r32 clocks and made red on white colour-scheme but busted 2 of the needle motors when reassembling. So need to fix them. Will put up pics of those clocks too :)
-
Like the stitching, not so keen on the clocks...
Tempted to buy a used wheel and give this a go before attempting it on my own...
Do you know if it's possible to buy pre-cut new leather for the wheels?
-
Thanks! and tts a cheaper, more labour intensive way to get R20 looks! Pretty close to R20 IMO.
Im afraid I dont know about the leather. On the whole I think its pretty difficult to get a good finish stitching your own leather unless leather work and upholstry is your day job. Personally I wouldnt do it. Very difficult to get the right tension and symmetry and uniformity.
