The safe answer is yes you'll need a new gateway. However, as 56 plates were into March 2007 you may have the non battery drain variant of a K version gateway, or even an L. Only way is to check or have it scanned with VCDS

Can you fit gateways yourself?

Depends.... I had an rns510 on my 54 plate with a modified firmware and never had an issue with battery drain, depends where you get the unit from and if it can be changed over or wound back so to speak  :happy2:

This apparently is a modified version of the 4020 firmware for units with battery drain issues

I installed it on my 07 with L gateway and it worked a treat.

After stick v10 maps on.

^^I have that and I thought the only modification was to change the disk partitioning percentage?
You have an L unit so nothing to worry about.

For the sake of what EDDIE-NL charges for a coded Gateway i would replace it as you then have the flexibility if you decide to upgrade the firmware at a later date.

Yep, doesn't modify for battery drain.  :happy2:

and when you sell the car you can swop back to the original gateway. And sell the newer gateway
