Hi,
Does an external OEM DAB antenna, such as 1K0 035 501 J (http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEU-OriginaL-Antenne-1K0035501J-VW-Radio-Dab-Radio-Telefon-Navi-Webasto-/281337464937), have a built-in signal amplifier or will this have to be purchased separately?
-
Ordered one yesterday and 6m lead.
You will not need a separate amp.
-
Looks a really good price for cracking piece of kit - would like to know if it's as physically as good as it's looks!
On another note I wouldn't like feeding all those types of cables through the tail gate grommets!
-
When considering the options available I discounted the boot mounted DAB amplifier as it looks like a massive PITA to install given you have to feed a cable though the rubber flexi gator between the car body and boot so of the OEM options a shark fin was the only one left.
Just waiting for mine to arrive from Germany so should have it be next weekend :)
-
That's good stuff! I have seen external DAB amplifiers - is that only in use when the DAB aerial is built into the rear window?
Also - and this may be a stupid question - how do I know that the aerial delivers both DAB and DAB+? What is the difference between these?
-
There are no plans to run out dab+ in this country, even though there doing a few trials
-
I'm not in the UK so here we have DAB+. Do you know what the difference between DAB and DAB+ is (frequencies?) and what determines if the antenna can receive one or the other?
EDIT: According to this http://www.my-gti.com/3691/adding-a-dabdab-aerial-diy it seems like there is no special aerial requirement for DAB+. I guess that they run on the same range of frequencies so the aerial will receive either none or both and then it's up to the head unit if it can decode only the DAB portion of the signal or the DAB+ portion as well. It would be great if someone were able to confirm my suspicion.
-
Hi guys
Does anyone know if the previously mentioned antenna - '1K0 035 501 J' is the same as 1K0 035 501H? Presumably a newer part number?
I need DAB, phone, satnav, FM & AM for my RNS510 DAB.
Thanks

Anyone know the difference .......if there is one???!
Thanks

-
The same part but I would go for the latest iteration. Also check out ebay.de, bought one for £65 inc postage brand new!
-
Thanks! Saw an earlier eBay link and wondered if the parts were the same. I'm in the US at the moment - was gonna try and buy it here but £65 is cheap and from a European supplier too. Excellent.
Cheers.

Fitted my DAB Sharkfin and I'm not going to lie, it is a MASSIVE PITA. Dropping the headlining is not difficult but time consuming and you really need to remove the A/B/C pillar trim to get the headlining down enough to feed the cable through. It takes a lot to stress me out but trying to get the securing nut onto the antenna base nearly caused a melt down!!! :fighting:
-
ah, got help to hold base down whilst I fitted the nut from underneath, otherwise it just popped out before I could get the nut on.
only had to pull top parts down/loosen a bit on b & c pillars.
I found hardest bit was releasing the old aerial FM connector, no room at all & you can't see how to release it, but desperation and brute force won that one.
then when punching C pillar black thin anchors back in, they would miss their mating holes :fighting:.........must be easier the 2nd time :happy2:
-
So I finally got to this as well... The aerial base is much larger than I thought and huuuuge compared to the tiny shark fin that was there before. I do agree with the rest of you; doing the switch isn't really that difficult, but it is somwhat time consuming and it is highly recommended to have an assistant to hold the base while you fit the securing nut from underneath. I actually found removing and refitting the C pillar trim and the panel below that to be the most challenging. Also, I wasn't able to entirely complete the installation because there wasn't enough room behind the head unit to push it into place with the DAB cable connected. I have ordered an angled fakra Z pigtail cable (http://www.ebay.com/itm/120951401626) and hopefully that will enable me to complete this :)
-
hmm...I don't remember any problem with access to the back of headunit, couldn't the aerial lead be threaded through somewhere clear??
I've got a parrot kit stuffed in there as well!!!
what does happen, is that everytime I pull the headunit out it catches the quadlock on the bottom and releases it, so the headunit pulls out but quadlock is still left behind.. :stupid:
-
I was a little surprised too because I have done a lot of research regarding the MFD2 > RNS 510 upgrade and nothing warned me of this. Basically, the back wall behind the player is straight and without any places to thread through the aerial lead. The head unit is fitted at an angle, slightly tilted so that the top of the player is closer to the backwall than the bottom. The aerial inputs on the bottom (FM/GPS) will therefore have plenty of clearence to the back wall while the DAB connector on top does not. I will take a picture the next time I open it up.
-
That surprises me as the space behind the head unit is positively cavernius!
-
is it because he has MFD2???
as you say loads of space at the back of mine as well, has something been removed from our cars or cut out??
-
Where did you order the extra cable from?
I've got the shark fin delievered so just need to extra cable to complete the job now
-
how about something like this?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Antenna-Extension-6m-Fakra-Jack-Type-Z-Aerial-Cable-RG174-Cable-0039P-/221480950796?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item33914b1c0c
I think you need female fittings both ends...

This is about as far in as I was able to push the head unit:
The cable coming out of the green connector is pushing towards the back wall (the yellow repair wires that can be seen is for retrofitted aux-in)
Here is a picture from the front:
Instead of using the cable paulw123 linked to (same as I bought) I would suggest this one with an angled end to make sure there is enough space:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110918256400 (6 meter)
If you have already bought the other one then you could wait to see if that will fit (as others have reported). If not, you can always by this pigtail cable (as I did):
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120951401626 (30 cm)
If you look at the other cables going into the RNS such as radio/gps they are angled as well... My HU is now fitted and DAB reception is good! :)
-
I've already ordered the cable mate, I've got a seat leon and i'm pretty sure when i put the rcd 510 in there was loads of room behind the unit.
-
yeah loads of room behind mine as well, in fact I was concerned the aerial lead might disappear down the void, we have yet to get to the bottom of why some people have no room at all......anyone?

I'm sure you are right. The Seat Leon is probably very different from my Volkswagon Golf.

Are you missing the central air vent seen at the top of the first picture in my previous post? It seems that vent is why the back wall needs to be where it is. Oh and btw I drive a LHD 2005 Golf mk5 TDi, not GTi.
-
mines a 08 golf gt tdi sport, so yeah it has the central dash air vent and not the earlier rubber item tray.
-
How common are mk5's that come standard with dab?
-
Wasn't an option on the Mk5. :)
-
Anyone know the difference .......if there is one???!
Thanks
PR
did you ever find out?
-
not many vw dab aerials about at mo.
probably vw dealer for a polo fm/dab one is your cheapest option?

Between 1K0 035 501 J and 1K0 035 501 H? Both listed as current part numbers with differences referring to aux heating...

If your vehicle has Auxillary heater fitted it use the aerial as the method of detecting the outside temperature and feeding this information into the system.
You can use it just for all the aerials other features just ther's no need to run the cable for the temperature monitoring.

what sort of cost? i can get a sharkfin/dab aerial for £60 from german
-
i couldn't find any in stock on german ebay?
-
i couldn't find any in stock on german ebay?
really? i found loads
-
I also found a few albeit different part numbers, I'll have to make a note of all the part numbers and check ETKA, the Polo ones are the same too right?
Does anyone have any decent photos to post up of how they look fitted on Mk5's? thanks
-
The polo DAB/FM aerial looks identical to standard golf FM aerial, but screw in antenna is a bigger thread 5mm I think, instead of 4mm.
Shark fin looks like this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volkswagen-Oem-DAB-Roof-Aerial-With-Dab-Gps-6m-Cable-Rns510-Dab-Rcd510-Rns315-/281485516869?pt=UK_CE_GPS_Accessories_Software_ET&hash=item4189d82045
-
Yeah I was thinking the Polo version as I've only recently bought a new Polo antenna so could swap it over
-
iv'e never managed to find polo DAB aerial anywhere on the net, except used on here :happy2:

good find :notworthy:
I'd buy that one and paint mainbody car colour, as someone else on here has done, plus if you ever need satnav & phone its all there. Bet the dealer polo one is more than this anyway.

thats the one i found. i was hoping for a polo one would be reasonable price

The only price I could find was something like £38 for base, £12 for antenna, £12 for 5m fakra cable, about 4years ago.
We need a vw parts guy on here, as a member, who could price things up for us...just what he wants after a day at work :signLOL:

Might be worth going via TPS are you thinking of organising a group buy?
My knowlege on aerials and their connections is limited, what extension cables would we need? I'm thinking though for those to look for the Chinese market ones as they will be much cheaper?
I have ETKA here so if I know what I'm looking for I can quote part numbers

i get one well with the lad in the parts department. i know what loom to get. just need an aerial oh and to sell the rcd510 :signLOL: :signLOL:

I'll be doing black headlining swap very soon so that could be handy for doing aerial/cable run at same time :jumping:
-
I've only recently fitted a new headlining, I was hoping to tie it all in but was not sure if I wanted the shark fin type (the more I saw photos of it the more I thought it was too large) since then I've found the following..
2015 model year Polo aerial, has a gloss black finish to the base, overall I reckon it looks pretty darn good, oh the thread on the antenna part is 5mm. I'll only be missing GPS which I'll need when I get the RNS510 but a GPS antenna in the dash is fine.
Part numbers for the AM/FM, DAB version as follows...
6C0 035 501A - aerial base
6C0 035 849A - rod-type aerial
I've ordered them via TPS, the base comes in at £37.55 + VAT

Picked up the antenna today, base will be in next week some time, need to order the extension cable available in range of lengths in 0.5m increments, so with route of cable down c-pillar and along sill I'm guessing 5.5m? Will check in morning.

Some have more room behind the head unit than others. I would recommend an angled one to make sure it fits (I had to do that): http://www.ebay.com/itm/110918256400
-
That gloss black polo base looks great.
I took my cable up over top of glove box ,up passenger A pillar, and under roof lining. It was easier than i thought and all the trim thumped back into place ok.
I was a bit worried about whether all the floor doorway trims would go back ok, as stepping in and out over wobbly floor bits would really annoy me..
-
I now have the aerial base, slight problem though in that it has a different fitting to the car, to fit would mean making a template and cutting of roof to accomodate, comments welcome :happy2:

Sorry but fak cutting the roof id just stick with the older type
-
oh sh*te, I didn't see that one coming...
Is there a seal to put under it to keep the water out?
I wouldn't be brave enough to cut the roof, think I'd change it for one that would fit through standard hole, less problems later on.......
-
If you've got an original roof aerial mount this is the best way to go to upgrade to DAB etc no drilling just aerial change over and additional wires front to rear to suit your requirements!

Yes there is a 2 part seal built into it; the usual outer seal, but also has an inner which is best shown with edited photo...

Wasn't keen on sharkfin, I think it's too large!.. but the Polo aerial that looks like Mk5 one with 6R0 part number is available in DAB. I just quite fancied the sleeker look with that glossy finish of the new Polo's aerial. I wrongly assumed it would be the same standard fitting and couldn't find any information on it, still I guess someone had to purchase it and find out, at least now you guys know what it looks like and save your cash if not wanting to go that route.
-
not a lot of room for error between those seals, would need a template to file it out to?
