Title: Dom's Tornado Red Gti - A bit of detailing
Post by: dom069 on July 08, 2014, 07:03:18 pm
Hi everyone!

I've just bought this from a current forum member, the spec taken from the advert:

2005 VW Golf GTi MK5 3 door in Tornado Red
•   63k Miles and only 1 Previous owner
•   Factory fitted Xenons
•   Full Service Incl. Cambelt and water pump @ 59,000 miles
•   Full VW service history apart from the last one which was done by an independent
•   Loads of other work including a gearbox rebuild and new clutch under warranty by VW 18 months ago
•   Latest revision D/V, cam follower and temp sensors/thermostats replaced.

The modifications are:
•   Bluefin Stage 1 with handset
•   Complete R32 Brake set up (Front and Rear)
•   Cat back non res Miltek Exhaust
•   Pre cat removed
•   MK6 Golf R Multi function steering wheel with working controls
•   MK6 Golf Gear knob and Gaiter
•   Bumpers and Skirts Professionally colour coded
•   BSH Catch Can
•   MK6 'slow close' Tailgate handle
•   Armrest
•   R32 rear lights
•   Black grill badge
•   Powerflex Dog mount Bush

I took a bit of a gamble as I stuck the deposit down without seeing the car, however it was every bit as good as it looks in the pics!

The 240 mile drive back from Portsmouth was a good way to give it a good test, the R32 brakes are awesome! I almost went through the windscreen the first time I used them

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fyy183%2Fcodling1234%2FIMG_20140706_192115_zpskwyxhmkl.jpg&hash=4e2ab2a07d21426fc5476c0e254c6ba42d754f70)

Got it home and squeezed it onto the drive, the neighbours must think we're mad! My girlfriend has just bought a new car so she has 2 on the drive already, now I have 2 as well

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fyy183%2Fcodling1234%2FIMG_20140706_191522_zpsehkn3mwg.jpg&hash=e245d7183e3553e5bd389d3e0140c9a4e6300662)

Just about squeezed it on though:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fyy183%2Fcodling1234%2FIMG_20140706_205638_zpsgvd5jhek.jpg&hash=f16ed66c87dfbb58cf322f712a8734b92b6caefb)

I gave it a quick scan for fault codes and it threw three up, one for the interior lights (the fuse has gone), one for the sunlight sensor on the dash and one for the alarm horn. I haven't set the alarm off to see if the horn sounds but I suspect the horn needs to be replaced. As for the sunlight sensors....not too sure what to do!

Anyway, I set the indicators as DRLs with Vagcom:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fyy183%2Fcodling1234%2FDSC_1780_zpsjodpr9p9.jpg&hash=dc12b8afb588dc3c306fbe9b891fa20b98f1125e)

And I love xenons!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fyy183%2Fcodling1234%2FDSC_1784_zpss4sste6q.jpg&hash=cbf4212d4031967972c441065b6afd080b0a58fe)

Did a couple of other bits yesterday, the alarm horn doesn't work so I need to get another one ordered.

When the Mk6 steering wheel was fitted, Lee fitted a cruise control stalk at the same time but forgot to fit the ECU wire so I've got one on ordered and took the trim off ready to fit and then code it:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2FDSC_1786_zpsvkcqbxys.jpg&hash=f25ee938192800af5022ad6a287fc6a82dc01c68)

I also took one of the tailpipes off to clean, refitted it so it sticks out a little less:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2FDSC_1787_zpsynaapinp.jpg&hash=72561309a020bc976f628720a6a0730ef310ede1)

I'll keep this as up do date as I can, I've got lots of plans for it but it won't be a quick project.

Cheers, I can't take credit for the steering wheel, the previous owner fitted it - it's a great upgrade though!

The MK5 is looking a bit scared of the ground next to the MK4

Got the exhaust sitting how I want it, I'm debating getting some GT100 tips to replace the current ones. I have them on the MK4 and prefer the look of them.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2FDSC_1795_zpsu2myutbx.jpg&hash=bd8052bd10dcd5180c18812cd5ce815c6d2d43eb)

I also fitted the diagnostics wire from the steering wheel module to the ecu and coded in the cruise control

The color coded lower plastics look smart! :happy2:

Cheers, I think I'm going to get the textured bits painted gloss black as well :happy2:

I bought and fitted an RCD510:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fyy183%2Fcodling1234%2FIMG_20140728_172849_zpslm2g89d7.jpg&hash=cc40bf19a15a4b5bf04bdd87566e24c26536a789)

Fitted a new can gateway at the same time and got that coded in with help from members on here :drinking:

Not really done anything else other than clean and drive it. I noticed this earlier when checking tyre pressures though :sad1:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fyy183%2Fcodling1234%2FDSC_2100_zpsioax8ctz.jpg&hash=4f285332cd9bfa494d01bce6954ad9fdfb3e7917)

Going to head to the dealers tomorrow to start a warranty claim, not holding out too much hope though because even if they offer 70% goodwill I'm assuming it'll be cheaper to get it done myself. There's also some slight bubbling under the boot badge as well :sad1:

I've been very slack on updating this! Mainly because I've not really done very much to it, after spending a few thousand on the MK4 I'm enjoying having a bit of cash to spend on things other than a car!

Anyway, fitted a cherry hazard switch and GTI handle inserts:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2FIMG_20141116_171109_zpsfc9bdbf4.jpg&hash=6dab5e4acca692cc088fb1fee1763a5120e2b993)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2FIMG_20141031_153240_zps4340bb30.jpg&hash=28e2466ef7b488a5afbd84a205c8f1de6a45f558)

Lowered it on a set of H&R 30mm springs:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2FIMG_20141206_160134_zps7fa3599c.jpg&hash=93ed6cd9b2bbb7d99ff5108086ceef8bd69b2b3d)

Which came off my brother's ED30:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2FIMG_20141221_130805_zps3813e6c4.jpg&hash=65580ecc60683b3a563d4691aa2e1694e4dfc840)

Both of us went to our parent's for Christmas and I couldn't resist a pic:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2FIMG_20141225_122745_zps00a89f2c.jpg&hash=9e545a01a8d41d7d60dda577efad68ba3de9ffd7)

Also fitted some wind deflectors which you can just about see here:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2FIMG_20141225_123456_zpse4dfeb6d.jpg&hash=d0b08786c34e75ed23e4bb559187ff853507dedb)

Lovely car you got there love the mk6 touches. your mk4 looks awesome too, i used to have one on air.
looks good on the H&R springs, what does it ride like? mines on 20mm ebiachs and would like it a little lower.

Any pics of your MK4? The H&Rs ride really well, massive improvement on standard! Much tighter in the corners and less crashy on the motorway!

I know it's months since you said it, but did you sort your alarm horn? If you've run a fault scan and it hasn't showed any errors about it, chances are that someone disconnected the battery which sometimes resets a setting which disables the horn. All it needs is a quick play with VCDS to re-enable it.

Cheers, but unfortunately it shows a fault code along with all these!

1 Fault Found:
000818 - Knock Sensor 2 (G66)
P0332 - 002 - Signal too Low - Intermittent <--- This has happened 4 times now which is slightly concerning.

1 Fault Found:
00061 - Footwell Lights
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit <--- Fitted LEDs and this code has appeared since.

2 Faults Found:
01552 - Motor for Central Locking; Drivers Door (V56); Lock
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit - Intermittent
00928 - Locking Module for Central Locking; Front Driver Side (F220)
008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent <--- Need to take the door skin off and look at the wiring loom

1 Fault Found:
01134 - Alarm Horn (H12)
            004 - No Signal/Communication <--- Alarm siren broken?

2 Faults Found:
01553 - Motor for Central Locking; Passenger Door (V57); Lock
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit - Intermittent
00929 - Locking Module for Central Locking; Front Passenger Side (F221)
008 - Implausible Signal <--- Need to take the door skin off and look at the wiring loom

1 Fault Found:
01539 - Headlights Not Adjusted
005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation <--- This appeared after fitting the springs.

2 Faults Found:
00821 - Antenna 2 for Radio (R93)
011 - Open Circuit <--- I fitted the headunit without an aerial adaptor - this should now be gone.
01327 - Control Module for Parking Aid (J446)
004 - No Signal/Communication <--- Due to the headunit thinking there's a reversing cam fitted, can't figure out how to code it out with VAGCOM

As you can see - a few codes!

Tornado red is my favourite color on the MK5 just behind Grey (Mainly because I have Grey  ) Love the MK6 bits, Father has a MK6 and always considering robbing his wheel and RCD510  Do you plan do bag the MK5? I had bagged MK4 myself and now have bagged MK5 and MK5 a lot more comfortable :happy2: Good Luck with it

Haha, the red was a must for me! It will be bagged eventually, I'm good mates with Matt at Only Charged Dubs and he now supplies BC Racing Coilovers which he can convert into bagged struts. Coilovers will happen sometimes next year and then convert to air the year after.

I'm trying to stay a bit more sensible with this one

Not really had much to update this with until now, part of the reason for this thread is to document everything that I do so I have a record of how everything progresses, so apologies if this isn't as interesting or as exciting as some builds on here!

Anyway, I spent yesterday with Matt at Only Charged Dubs where I managed to sort a few issues.

First my xenons haven't been self levelling since fitting the springs, luckily the rear level sensor had gone past its maximum point so that was an easy fix.

Next up was Passat subframe bolts, followed by an s3 short shifter. While I had my head near the gearbox I spotted the tell tale signs of a coolant leak. Closer inspection revealed that it's coming from a housing on the side of the head.

Since buying the car the tailgate has never sat properly, after spending a while adjusting the stops, hinges and latch it's much better, although I think the rear bumper and lights also need adjusting.

Continuing with bodywork, I got hold of a non-genuine wing from a mate to test fit.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2FDSC_0358_zps0sblmwjt.jpg&hash=96c8f07b9ae53777c3d496f32f690818e62a95bc)

After stripping the car down

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2FIMG_20150131_165540_zpsztqd4wk8.jpg&hash=6f9708e98dc96ff0918e62d24dff2f286c9a0468)

It was apparent that the fitment was very poor

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2FDSC_0354_zpsehchqrph.jpg&hash=99b8d399aaa01a88751fa4657de4c017bb1a759e)

This was expected I guess, I had a good look at my wing while it was off and it doesn't look too bad, the metal itself is clean and the paint has just bubbled. I think I'm going to go down the route of having my wings repaired.

While the wing was off I removed the alarm siren as it hasn't worked since buying the car, this was mainly to check the part numbers so I can buy a new one.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2FDSC_0357_zpsuxvtjrxg.jpg&hash=2b58502e497c31f32f61bc9b31593354b8200396)

Also spotted an oil leak that looks like the rocker cover gasket and a few bushes that are splitting slightly so these will be sorted along with the coolant leak in a couple of weeks.

I'm going to get my local bodywork guy to take a look over it and see what he reckons. Obviously if he has any doubts about it then I'll get some genuine wings and have them painted up instead.

Now for another update, fitted a gloss black rear badge:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2Fimage_zpsxlz2xpcm.jpg&hash=0d0cb0469c332af78178f84777d7f8302cd102e2)
got the wings done under warranty along with a few other bits:

The more I see an R32 rear the more I want one! But I've just had my lowers painted like you had before so it's not top priority.

Your car looks great, it's coming on nicely. And it's good to see attention being paid to faults as well as the mods.

Oh and that's a nice mk4 too. Had an old slammed PD myself..

Keep up the good work

Cheers for the comments :happy2:

I gave the engine bay a quick once over:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2Fimage_zpswvogogf1.jpg&hash=fa429c013e75ffdfd9573779d3429b27a676e138)

My brother was having some issues with his Ed30 last week so I popped over to take a look:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2Fimage_zpsjr7vkxbr.jpg&hash=e810fde027ed14746d897aa3b82c554d886b93c4)

It ended up being a faulty PCV valve so temporarily I gave him mine and refitted by BSH revamp kit:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2Fimage_zpsqprgop6t.jpg&hash=4ae7f4527cee8b17ab4a2784e7f7f23cd5f4a79b)

I had some tint film lying around from previous cars so decided to do the fogs:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2Fimage_zpsy9kgxcrn.jpg&hash=ead1c13f6788be6cc4d5233da86b5b09ff101158)

I've been having issues with my tail light bulbs, they appear to be way too bright and look like this:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2Fimage_zps0dnub9ky.jpg&hash=1964ff11b435a13c0130be08bb635ee948ab3ea6)

Does anyone have an recommendations for replacement bulbs?

Finally, I deleted the rear wiper the other day:

Looks brilliant Dom. Where did you get the gloss black rear badge? Been looking for ages...

This is the badge that I bought:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gloss-Black-VW-Rear-Trunk-Lid-Badge-Emblem-Replacement-fit-for-Golf-MK6-09-12-/191136148878?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&fits=Model%3AGolf%7CPlat_Gen%3AMK+VI&hash=item2c809a2d8e

I had to trim some tabs off the back and glue it in place as it's a MK6 one (although I was told the car had a Mk6 handled fitted).

This car looks as it has just left the factory! Awesome!

Cheers, it's pretty clean! Not perfect, but close!

Time for another update!

I popped into Only Charged Dubs for a service on Tuesday afternoon:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2Fimage_zpslcariyma.jpg&hash=44d0f7cec8dafdac1590b699b403d6e384420798)

While I was there I decided that a set of coilovers was needed. Matt happened to have a set of BC Racing coilovers on the shelf, they were specced as 'extra low' when ordered so have the potential for a massive drop should I want it.

I arranged to go back on Friday to get them fitted. When I arrived Joe was finishing building them up:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2Fimage_zpswcr3ekg9.jpg&hash=5d108a6e521f89b28333e226d24008b145688b86)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2Fimage_zpsbfu4ckde.jpg&hash=54a183024322d29697bc8e5dfea274d451daee55)

We decided to set a small amount of negative camber (as yet unknown exactly how much - I'll go for alignment this week).

With the wheels off I gave the rear arches a check over and found two small areas of rust bubbling on the seam. I sanded it back to clean metal and treated it with a 'rust converter' to try and stop the spread. I'm going to tiger seal over the top to try and seal it all in.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2Fimage_zpsnbnuqdp9.jpg&hash=f15c0cb1b0c8e87271e0f2d8d64619c38c705dfc)

Joe got cracking at removed the old suspension:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2Fimage_zpsjpyh2ghk.jpg&hash=889d0376b993498a717b7b7fbcb148a2a3cfcb0b)

The car gave up a bit of a fight, one of the ball joint bolts snapped and then the driveshaft popped out inside the outer CV boot. They were all sorted pretty easily though.

We wound the coilovers all the way down to see what it would look like:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcodling1234%2FMobile_Uploads%2Fimage_zps3iu1phgl.jpg&hash=586f56fd1fa847ca41042fe0805486162b3fd6da)

It was sat on the tyres and wouldn't get off the ramp

I set a provisional ride height and headed home happy!

Sat morning I popped round to a mate's garage to get the brakes skimmed:

The eagled eyed amongst you will have also spotted a smooth grill and I ditched the yellow tint on the fogs.

This week I need 2 new tyres and full alignment, then I'll be skint for a while :signLOL:

Wow, not updates this in ages! Hopefully this will be in the right order.

I needed 2 tyres and was getting a lot of scrubbing so ordered 2x215/35/18 Goodyear Eagle F1s, fitted them and ESP was having a fit due to mismatching tyres front/rear. I ordered a pair of 215/35/18 Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas and got them fitted. A bit of playing with VCDS and the speedo was reading correctly again.

Literally 2 weeks later I went to collect a new car for the other half and spotted this:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1378.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fah107%2Fdallgood1%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2FDC26345D-5D0B-439E-94B0-9A103486923D_zpsjstveqk4.jpg%7Eoriginal&hash=6a834d95cf942918cf238eda997c91a6f7e2bca2) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DC26345D-5D0B-439E-94B0-9A103486923D_zpsjstveqk4.jpg.html)

Yup, in a 2 week old tyre! Tried to repair it but the patch wouldn't seal:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1378.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fah107%2Fdallgood1%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F64016767-0E9B-49CF-9526-2084240F2F92_zpsl5jbvsp8.jpg%7Eoriginal&hash=3e9766905f1b9618f6add5f3498e71fc6aa2f0a4) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/64016767-0E9B-49CF-9526-2084240F2F92_zpsl5jbvsp8.jpg.html)

Another tyre ordered  :scared:

Picture of it with said new car:

Fitted some nice chrome tipped switches:

Hit a massive section of road that had sunk causing this:

Luckily the sump didn't crack, a new CV boot was all that was needed.

Took it to Only Charged Dubs so Matt could chop my car up

Then went and got the alignment sorted:

It flew through it's MOT earlier:

Finally I've got a cam follower to fit and I'm collecting the parts for a boost gauge:

Also needed a new battery and had to have the rear arm bushes chopped out when the alignment was done, decided to have Powerflex bushes fitted. Haven't got any pictures of those though.

Love this. In fact, I remember commenting on the R32 rear. Well, I've got an R32 rear at the bodyshop as we speak and I'm in on the Powervalve group buy. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery..!

Question about the front plate though.. is it undersize? And mounted on a smooth (US) grill? And if so do you get any trouble off the police?

It looks mint. One thing I'd love is a subtle plate that didn't overwhelm the front end like the standard one does. Yours is very tidy and subtle.

Apologies if you've posted about it, just had a quick scan through your build to catch up.

Cheers, the R32 rear end is so much better than standard :happy2:

It's a 3/4 size plate with US grill, haven't had any problems with police. I'm on my 3rd one now though. The first was held on by magnets but I lost that when I did the damage underneath, the second was held on my suction cups and I lost that somewhere last week  :sad1:

It's been a bitter-sweet few weeks with the car. I changed the cam follower a couple of weeks ago, it's done about 30k miles since it was last done so thought it was about time:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1378.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fah107%2Fdallgood1%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2F15077FA9-12B1-4164-B069-2F8DD9ACACE3_zpsmoj5ywzl.jpg%7Eoriginal&hash=5e58b7b1fa41c074571cf35d6aa027a82eb6d485) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/15077FA9-12B1-4164-B069-2F8DD9ACACE3_zpsmoj5ywzl.jpg.html)

Annoying I snapped one of the PCV pipes, it was incredibly brittle. I've bodged it back together temporarily, I have another ready to go on when I find time.

I gave it a long overdue clean!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1378.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fah107%2Fdallgood1%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2FCA31796D-4841-4E09-B7F7-69842165FED1_zpsjqvcywqz.jpg%7Eoriginal&hash=37fd68e8f9b6da9b743202cfa7d8b0988c6edd6a) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/CA31796D-4841-4E09-B7F7-69842165FED1_zpsjqvcywqz.jpg.html)

Then drove up to the lake district where I have bought a new house which has not only a garage but a decent length drive:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1378.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fah107%2Fdallgood1%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2FF5DBFEEE-2054-4259-8149-2C118DCFB8A7_zpsyq3cam4s.jpg%7Eoriginal&hash=4fba2e35e6ea32e212ab449c1dabb0e2f51dbcb9) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/F5DBFEEE-2054-4259-8149-2C118DCFB8A7_zpsyq3cam4s.jpg.html)

Then to bring my back down to reality with a bump I hit a brick whilst doing about 60mph on an a-road, it was in the middle of my lane and it was dark so unfortunately I couldn't do anything to avoid it. I got the car back to where I'm staying, but overnight it decided to have a wee all over my parent's drive...safe to say my dad wasn't too happy!

Got it recovered to a local garage where they were supposed to swap the sump this morning, annoyingly the sump they had ordered didn't have a hole for the oil return pipe. After a couple of hours of desperately trying to get hold of a new sump today/tomorrow the decision was made to use chemical metal as a temporary fix until Monday when it will be changed.

They ride really well, considering how low it is. I've got the damping set to about the middle so if I raise it up I could soften the damping and it would be a lot more comfortable.

How much were they mate?
You get any knocks or anything from the camber top mounts?
My works not far from ocd so might pop down

They were £690 from OCD  :happy2:

The camber mounts can be a little bit clunky on poor road surfaces but they aren't too bad. I'll be over at OCD on Monday to swap my sump over (hopefully)

Thats running quite a lot of front toe in and not much camber. With those plates in I would aim for about -2º of front camber and about 0º05 toe in.

Why is that Rich?

Will help with handling. Stock camber is about -0.5º on the front. so you want to get as close to -2º as possible to aid front end grip.

Reducing the front toe in will give better steering and reduce understeer a bit.

Car looks great, a bit jealous if I'm being honest, just a little low for my liking!

This is pretty much my target. It's perfect.  Nice taste in mods mate. Think I remember commenting on this a while ago actually!

I'm already identical in bodywork and colour, except I've got an ed30 front. Got a Powervalve R32 etc.

I'm on H&R springs and BBS VZ, so sort of the same... but a bit tame to the eye in comparison!
If I can be convinced that 19s on coilovers ride ok I'll be looking at a similar result to this once I'm at 2+. Maybe with CH-R though.

Really nicely done this. Credit to the forum.

Cheers for the comments, progress has been slow but I'm pretty happy with it now. I want an ED30 front splitter then I'll leave the outside alone.

I live in Sheffield but work in Conisbrough and spend a fair bit of time in Doncaster, either seeing mates or round at Only Charged Dubs in Kirk Sandall. When did you see me? Guessing you're local then?

Another small update, I've spent a couple of afternoons round at Only Charged Dubs in recent weeks. The first one was to check out what looked like rust starting on the n/s sill. Matt let me borrow a corner of his unit and use his tools so I stripped it down:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1378.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fah107%2Fdallgood1%2FMobile%2520Uploads%2FFAA969D4-3AB1-4EBA-8204-994F969EF4B7_zpsh0o9p4bo.jpg%7Eoriginal&hash=910b3f38ea8441c11a923ad1e7966eeed3db3bbf) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/FAA969D4-3AB1-4EBA-8204-994F969EF4B7_zpsh0o9p4bo.jpg.html)

Luckily it wasn't rust, it was just paint peeling off the sill. I can only assume it happened when the wings were changed.

I also chucked in some new plugs, opted for NGK BKR7EIX's

Yesterday I was round for Matt to change the bearings in my top mounts as they were getting very clunky.

Finally I gave my snowfoam lance a service and cracked out the snowfoam:

Are the grills painted black on this? Debating painting mine but unsure if it'll look too much on red!

The grills are just standard plastic treated with Aerospace 303 @Ollieeee (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=14633)

Bit of a mammoth update...

I've had some droning and vibration through the car at motorway speeds for a while, I was pretty sure that it was down to the tyres wearing unevenly but wanted to try some other wheels to make sure. My brother has an ED30 and some winter wheels so I decided to try his R32 winters on...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1378.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fah107%2Fdallgood1%2FDSC_0100_zpsklkh5wdc.jpg%7Eoriginal&hash=96d41ce6b6025c8c521b56195ac18a6730ae8587) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/DSC_0100_zpsklkh5wdc.jpg.html)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1378.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fah107%2Fdallgood1%2FDSC_0101_zpspdcnyhwp.jpg%7Eoriginal&hash=57161fb70420cf70f971283c9d7cd6a8938674cd) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/DSC_0101_zpspdcnyhwp.jpg.html)

Went for a drive, still had vibration and a lot of noise. I put this down to the balancing of the wheels and the fact they are winter tyres in 20 degree heat.

Next was swapping his ED30 wheels on to mine:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1378.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fah107%2Fdallgood1%2FDSC_0107_zpsvcsph0wk.jpg%7Eoriginal&hash=cbdade6e411172c0defde6b30dcce5b4aa39431d) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/DSC_0107_zpsvcsph0wk.jpg.html)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1378.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fah107%2Fdallgood1%2FDSC_0105_zpsd8zfurvt.jpg%7Eoriginal&hash=3dff03fc0a600765d3648a479556ef03beddb290) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/dallgood1/media/DSC_0105_zpsd8zfurvt.jpg.html)

I love the darker colour of them so will get my CH's refurbed darker sometime. Anyway, no more noise or vibration which confirms the problem is wheel/tyre related, I had the wheels on a balancer a couple of weeks ago and they looked straight which means it must be the tyres.

Part 2 coming in a sec...

Are the grills painted black on this? Debating painting mine but unsure if it'll look too much on red!

The grills are just standard plastic treated with Aerospace 303 @Ollieeee (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=14633)

Ah ok, i've got some 303 so might have to give it a try!

Thanks, I was staying with my mum and dad so borrowed his Nikon D40. Only an old entry level SLR but still capable of some nice pictures.

Hi Guys, sorry for the thread revival.... But if anyone's interested I'll be putting this lovely GTI back up for sale this weekend once I've got some fresh photos. Let's me know if anyone's interested.

Hi Guys, sorry for the thread revival.... But if anyone's interested I'll be putting this lovely GTI back up for sale this weekend once I've got some fresh photos. Let's me know if anyone's interested.

Tom

On to today then, this morning I decided that I would spend the day giving it a detail.

I started with a wash and then clay, following that I gave it a machine polish using a couple of different compounds of Menzerna polish on a couple of different pads. The whole car was waxed with Collinite 476s, glass cleaned with Autoglym glass polish, exhaust with Autosol and trims were treated with Aerospace 303.

After the initial wash:

Here you can see some swirling/defects in the paint:

After claying:

Again you can see defects in the paint in direct sunlight:

Most of the front grills were removed for cleaning:

Its looks cracking - can I ask how you tackled the headlights? THanks
