There's probably been a thread about this before but oh well
thought I'd see why people slate air suspension? Reasons?
Before you all go on about handling etc it has been proven to be better than coils (accuair proved this on their s4)
-
I don't hate it I'm just bored of it tbh
I much prefer a static low car with a perfect setup to run low instead of bags
Obviously bags are practical but for me it's static>bags any day.
If I used my car for more than 2 days a week I'd have to have bags but I drive a horrible citreon van for work
-
I really like air when someone puts the time in to get a really nice fitment, but when it's just stuck on any old crap it sort of ruins it for me, I also don't understand airing a car with small wheels to get it on the floor, I think it's just looks a bit silly with the massive arch gaps either side of the wheel. But the whole point of modifying cars is that everybody has their own style and preferences, there's plenty of people that won't like what I've done to my car, each to their own.

That just like Michelin proving their tyres are better than Goodyear.......
Why dont F1 cars use air ride?
Why dont BTCC cars use air ride?
Why dont Rally cars use air ride?
It has its place... and that place is at car shows so people can get a semi on because you've "Laid frame".
-
It does not handle better then coilovers.. Bilstein, kw, ohlins etc would be using it and im sure they are certainley not listening to accuairs review
It will go out in a few years just like badboy bonnets, and neons of the maxpower days! It just looks stupid imo, but obviously everyone has there own interests in cars
If your into shows etc and parking up and letting people admire a very clean car i understand if thats your thing.. Not a good look when the wheel doesnt fit nice with the arch aswell, when fitted with an average fitting wheel and you cant see half the wheel its not a good look lol
-
The fact that accuair say it handles better than coilovers is the reason not to believe them. Not exactly going to say it handles terribly are they?
I would still have air suspension though

So what does any of that have to do with why people hate air so much? You just listed a bunch of cars which don't use it.
Get a semi on

Well they certainly proved it in a video.
Yeah there's clearly a preference to what suspension people wanna use. Also, this won't be a phase like neon lights and bad boy bonnets. As this actually changes the whole look of the car, not a tacky mod.
I started this thread because everyone seems to slate air and not give it enough praise. I'm sure
If it was more affordable people would buy it. I've had both and I'd rather air die to destroying your car everytime
You come a speed bump.
-
If it was 50p I still wouldnt have it :signLOL:
-
Nothing against air and it can look good on the right cars/with the right mods. I just can't see the point in doing it to a performance car. It all comes down to what the aim is for the car and how well it's done.
But generally:
Performance > coil overs
Show car > air

That's still probably too expensive for you rich

I hate air for 2 reason - firstly because as Rich has already pointed out, no sports car or race car on the planet uses it. Therefore the evidence is pretty clear. BILLIONS of pounds of research allied with millions of man hours and engineering by people who know a lot more about it than you or I have decided that air suspension is not for performance cars. What types of vehicles do use air? Luxury limos and buses, neither of which are performance oriented. This is primarily a performance website, so therefore why would anyone advocate a worse solution? This is my objective answer.
The other reason I hate it is because slammed cars (air or static) look naff. There are no exceptions imo - they would all look better at a sensible ride height. This is my subjective answer with which you are free to disagree.
-
So because a race car doesn't have air suspension it makes it sh*t
This isn't primarily a performance website at all. Yes the majority of people are more performance based but no where does it state this is a performance site.
Everyone's untitled to their own opinion.
You can have any ride height you want on air suspension. I

End of the day airride is great if your into shows.. Want to have your car low without scraping everywhere and decent enough handling for the road
Coilovers.. If your into a half decent ride height and not into all the scence stuff.. Coilovers are not made to slam your car on its ass (decent ones anyway), thats why it damages peoples cars, tyres etc.. There not for looks there for handling
For me its coilovers i am into racing/ trackdays etc and for anyone like me airride just doesnt make sense, everyone is into different things but i just dont get the slam the car as low as possible when at a show.. It doesnt even look good

For me, its just the biggest waste of money you can spend on a mod. All your doing is making the car a bit lower? How does that justify £2000+?
That could be spend on some serious mods, whether it be Big Turbo conversion, a really decent set of coilovers, 4 brand new tyres, brand new TBE, BBK....etc...

So everything you've listed there is something you would do? Maybe most people don't care about doing
A turbo upgrade. Quite a few show cars are running some serious power so they have the best of
Both worlds.
As people have Said it's not for everyone's taste , but it's the mod they've chosen, especially for a show car as it's the best mod you can do.

Im not actually sure what the point of this topic is, you ask people to tell you why there is so much hate, we tell you and then you defend it :stupid: :stupid:
What do you want people to say?
And plus, having Air is not best of both worlds. a Big turbo, BBK and KW V3's coil-overs is :happy2: :happy2: :happy2:
-
Its all relative on what you want / need. A massive bhp car would be wasted on me as i spend my life crawling through traffic. I would like a low car with air suspension that looks good.
-
I take it from your initial post that you think air is better handling than coils. As I mentioned this is factually wrong - or at least every major sports car manufacturer seems to think so. That doesn't make it sh*t, it just means that it is categorically not the performance option. Nobody is suggesting that show cars don't have big power, but I really don't see the point in having big power and then a compromised suspension set up.
Also Ross is saying that £2k is a lot of money for suspension. The money you'd save from getting coils is money you could spend getting more power and overall a higher performance car. You've said you don't agree with me that this is a performance site, and yet everyone seems to be mentioning performance. I wonder why that is the case.
-
Here's my 10p.
Air ride has an ease and practicality that coilovers try to highlight as their selling point: height adjust ability. Air ride does this from the comfort of your drivers seat with the push of a few buttons, where as coilovers involve a morning on the drive way to change the ride height. What coilovers do have is better handling credentials, a good kit (with some time invested) will transform any chassis, the mk4 Golf being a good example of such effects.
Price wise, for a decent set of 2-way adjustable coilovers you're looking at nearly £1400, where as the cheapest air ride is the wrong side of £2000. Each have plus points and each have negative points, for myself it's coilovers that won out as I can't afford air ride and ultimately I want pure handling over all others.
As for the "which handles better", that's a subjecting and relative term: Air ride "handles" better in everyday life than coilovers in a sense whereas coilovers would "handle better" on a track. Reviews/research endorsed by a company for PR reasons will always be bias, regardless of their claims otherwise.
-
Yeap air suspension has its place in the modding world, why shouldn't it, we all change a plethora of different things on our cars for various different reasons, be it show or go.
Not my thing, I don't understand it but that may be my age I suppose (42). As to air being a better performing suspension than coils......hmmmmmm. What if you watch a video on UFO's, the Yeti and the Loch Ness monster.....do you believe that to be true too?
Why do you care what peeps think? I care more about the turd I'll give birth to later than I do what you (or anyone else) think of my car or mods. Do what you want, it's your car and a lovely one it is.
Add a pole to this thread.....
Yes its great, I love it
No its sh*t, I fu*king hate it
:happy2:

Third option:

^^^^ Yeah but why ask and question and then disregard what people are saying (maybe not disregard, but try to convince us it worth £2500+ when its not)
-
Air ride is pricey because there's high demand and little supply. 2 major companies own the market, with a third just popping into Performance VW now. Look at how many coilover companies there are...
Monopoly. As soon as 4-5 companies make good air ride the price will drop down and then it may be worth asking this question again.
-
im just glad this mk5 forum isnt airride city lol
-
^^^^ Luckily enough all the scene queens are on Edition38, thank fu*k. Only need to be 12 with minimal pubic hair and an ill fitting pair of jeans to roll on there.
-

:popcornsoda:
You missed GY f1 v ps3 v PSS
This isn't primarily a performance website at all. Yes the majority of people are more performance based but no where does it state this is a performance site.
Not strictly true, it started as a mk5 gti owners site and the mk5 gti is a performance hatch/drivers car so this is technically a performance site.
Over the years this place has developed into mainly anything VAG but still has a bias to performance. There are build threads of people who have put air on their cars (Big Al being one iirc) but mainly it's performance threads.
No one here has anything major against someone putting air on a car and will appreciate the work gone into doing it but as you said many are performance bias
-
To be honest I appreciate static lows far more as it's more difficult to achieve what they do... Not just rock up to a shop get an install and notch, then go trophy chasing like some of the scene queens :signLOL:
-
My edition30 is on air ride now and I've tried out a few sets of coilovers on it and air beats all of them
I like the way you can set it to what ever you want, if you want it hard or soft
Still drive around with my wheels tucked in the arches no problem
Always self levelling
If I hit a hard left corner, the right bags will fill up more, if I slam the brakes on the front bags fill up
I'd recommend it to anyone over coilys any day!
-

I'm defending it because you said you could buy a big turbo etc, maybe people don't want that. Bbk, most of the show cars have big brakes, turbos etc.
All I'm saying is people slate it without experiencing it.
I understand that people won't like It and people prefer coils but there's so much hate for air

^^^^ See, just agreeing with people who like. The main problems is so much money for very little in return. Yes if it was £500 it might be worth it if you you dont want performance.
As it stands now its just for shows queens and people who think they look cool. :drinking:
-
I don't know why you care what people think.
Choose your mods, spend your money and don't try and seek justification from others and don't care if they don't like it.
I am sure my next mod will raise a few eye brows too but am Not doing it to try and win a willy measuring match? No. I am doing it for me. :happy2:
-
Most people, men especially have been conditioned sub consciously, to lust over cars that are low, formula 1, sports cars, etc. Why do you think manufacturers drawings of concept cars and production cars always have oversize wheels, rubber bands for tyres and ground scraping stance, but when the cars are built for sale you look at them and think, wtf, with its skinny wheels and ride height that would put a land rover to shame. Its just natural to want to put wide wheels and lowered suspension on it. Let's be honest do most people on here with lowered cars, air, or coilovers, drive like they are Lewis Hamilton on a formula 1 track every day, no, most just like the look of it.
-

Ok that's fine. But you'll be here until the sun dies out trying to convince the masses. :P
-
To be fair yeah it does cost a bit but it's defo worth it
I got sorted out and saved about £1200 anyways
-
Because it looks sh*t, looks like the car belongs in McDonalds car park and just looks f**kin chavvy
-
Before you all go on about handling etc it has been proven to be better than coils (accuair proved this on their s4)
LOL.

George, you like it and thats great. Some people including myself dont. Its no problem that we disagree, thats what makes the world fun.
I doesnt need to be highly rated by other for you to like it. Enjoy what you have bought.

I think the whole "slammed" look is just sh*te. Looks cheap and nasty. Sort of cars that chavs drive.
it's called having an opinion, you "dick".

I can see where this is going.....
