Title: 200bhp to 330bhp - how hard is it?
Post by: angelis on July 20, 2014, 12:27:24 pm
Hi all.

New user and first post.

I've just purchased a 2006 MK5 GTi with 95,000 and DSG box.

How reliable would the car be if I modded it to 330bhp and roughly how much would it cost to do properly?

Also, what's the most BHP anyone has got from the MK5 GTi?

I actually got the GTi as a daily driver, but I'm now thinking of filming a documentary where it's modded and raced against a Ferrari (with over 320bhp) at Santa Pod/Brands Hatch.

Thanks

PS. pick it up next week

Its not just a case of saying a figure as a few factors will have a bearing on that, who is doing the work ? Are you buying the parts brand new or used ? Which tuner is remapping the car ?
A few have big figures on here, reliability would not be a problem providing your car has a clean bill of health.
A DSG box is what you want as you will not need to replace the clutch.

You need to look into a K04 conversion :happy2:

In regards to big power… probably not the highest horse power but watch from 2:20 and you can see what is achievable with enough money…

To the OP. The easiest and probably the cheapest way to 330bhp from where you are now would be to sell the GTI and buy a GTI Edition 30. It already has the K04 fitted and a stronger engine and simply needs a stage 2+ map, intake, exhaust and high pressure fuel pump.
Reasonably you can expect north of 330bhp.

It wouldn't make much of a documentary though!  :signLOL:

The ammount of power this car has is pointless without 4wd.. A skoda Octavia  that was also at shakespeare raceway at GTI inters could only do 14 seconds down the quarter mile. Whereas a 350bhp ed30 done sub 14's..

Waste of time without 4wd imo

I can't wait for the 7R to arrive because of this reason. You have to know how to drive a fast FWD car. You cannot launch it as you just scrabble around like an old dear on the dancefloor

Too late. I pick up the GTi on Wednesday.

Wanted a cheap runaround to replace my 15 year old Honda Accord. An Edition 30 was too expensive for what I wanted.

Besides, the more we "eff up", the more entertaining it is.

Definitely new parts. My long term plan was to upgrade with better quality parts as when it needed doing.

Saying that, I've just got a set of used edition 30 BBS wheels.

The nearest Tuner to me is AMD Tunning in Thurrock.

Any big GTi meets happening this year?

500+ is a lot in a front wheel drive car.

At 400bhp I think the mk5 handles it very easy on a good set up, even without a diff. You've just got to know how to drive, it's not all about stamping your foot on the throttle like a heavy handed caveman.

Like has been said, sell your GTI, buy an Edition 30, a few mods will see 330bhp very easy.

I'll get Simon to take you round Castle Combe or out on the road and you can explain how slow his car is.

The 1/4 mile is not really it's natural habitat but that doesn't stop him having a go.

What about an apology for your 1st post?? I was clearly referring to a fwd car, on a quarter mile, not about whether Simons car was slow, which you and I know it isn't.

Then perhaps I wouldn't of replied to your posts in such a tone Ian.  :sad1:

It's a wedge of money to sink into a car that will struggle with traction. This is why VAG uses Haldex or Torsen on the Golf R/performance Audi's.

To answer the OP - 330 Bhp, how hard is it? Not very. Why don't you get a remap first and see what you think if it's going to be a daily driver. For Santa Pod? Buy an Evo.

Reliability? Well it depends on what sort of life the engines had but on nearly 100k I would be expecting component failure as a possibility modded or not at some point.

Also as you have DSG, I wonder if uprated clutch packs would be necessary which would add to the upgrade costs.
