Introduced myself on the forum the other day, and said I would put up some pictures.
Been looking for at getting one of these since I passed my test, but insurance and money would never allow it until now, after looking at several examples, some early, some late models, I settled on this 05 model. (Good price and not worth paying the extra thousands for a later one when this is in such good condition!)
Haven't had much time or good weather to take any pics of it since I've had it, so here is one from the dealers site!!

The dealer/trader had the wheels refurbed and painted that colour which I think suits the car nicely, not a fan of aftermarket wheels, but I think this is just enough!! The paintwork is in very good condition for a nearly 10 year old car -I know it looks pink in those pictures, but it is just the light- No dents or major stonechips.
It has been well looked after, but still wanted to give it a proper service/going over.
So I ordered all this lot

New Mats
Thermostat (Doesn't heat up as quick or as high as I'd like)
Diverter Valve (Nothing wrong with mine I don't think, just a precaution)
Oil and air filters
New oil
New coolant (for the thermostat change)
Spark plugs
New keyfob emblems
Double din stereo fascia/kit (Have a pioneer Bluetooth/DVD/iPod out of my old car)
Will try and complete the service next weekend! Need opinions on the aux kit for factory head unit, as I have began to like the standard setup and am having doubts over fitting my own!

Also.... Is it normal for the exhaust to be quite throaty as standard? Its not overly loud, just at certain points in the rev range it rasps and coming off throttle it pops slightly. No flames or anything though!!

Mine does something similar. I think that's how they are.

Ok thanks, don't think anything is at fault, just wanted to know what other peoples were like!!
-
Not a fan of red cars but does look nice
-
These turned up today, didn't cost much at all, and will add a bit to the interior.

This is the head unit that I had in my old car, I'm not sure whether to fit it yet or keep the standard one with maybe an ipod connector?
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs347%2Feparkes8%2Favhp3200bt.jpg&hash=6275abf958245eb701f918e5d1ad954b6d68d3a1)
All the lights on there change colour and shade, so I can match it up nicely with the standard light colours if I decide to fit it.

The seat inserts tidy up the seats no end :happy2:

Welcome on board! :drinking:
(Unlike some peeps in your thread I LOVE a red car!!)
-
I like it in red, my mk4 Golf was also Tornado Red and that polished up really nice. Had a black car after that and was a pain to keep clean, always looked dirty and scratched!!
-
Looks good.
Just got a red 5 door myself :)

So did my 'big service' today, took ages getting to the thermostat!
All done now though. Filters, thermostat, oil, HPFP cam follower, diverter valve, spark plugs and new coolant.
Sounds so much quieter on idle now than it did before, not sure if that's down to the oil change or the cam follower though.
The oil that came out was very black, seemed like it hadn't been done in a while.
Here are pics of the Cam follower and Diverter valve that I removed - Nowhere near as bad as some of the examples I've seen on here, but cant be ideal surely!

Just need to take it for a drive now to get my warning lights to go out!

A good days work!! Looks like those part were a bit tired, should imaging you will notice a bit more performance too :happy2:
-
welcome to the forum :signLOL:

Yes, it feels like a different car.
I've only had it a week or so because I have been away with work, and I wouldn't have said it was slow. But now it feels so much more responsive and smoother. It also gets up to temperature quickly too and stays there. So a decent bit of work!
Gave it a clean after, not really into the whole detailing side of things, just a good wash and quick polish works for me!
Before that though, had a couple of bits to do.....
Remove this sticker

Looks good.
You'd be shocked at the difference a professional polish makes...takes years off the car. I had my red one done recently and it makes a huge difference.
If you start detailing you will probably get addicted...
-
I just get bored too quickly, once I've washed it and dried it, I barely have the enthusiasm to get the polish out!
-
Long time since the last update.
Since I got the car I had been debating whether to put the Pioneer double din head unit in.
I decided to go ahead as was fed up of burning CD's.
I ran a switched live from one of the spare fuses, which works a treat and I routed the ipod lead from the back of the HU to the drivers side glovebox (iPod lives in there and doesn't get touched until it gets taken out for updates).

Fits in nicely and have got the colours to match up quite well.
More updates soon, headlight restoration and new wiper stalk as mine has just failed!
-
You're a very hands on dude doing all that servicing yourself :congrats: , any power upgrades coming?
-
Im a race mechanic so I have always done the work myself
Nothing major on the power side I dont think, maybe an exhaust as the standard one is giving up anyway and probably a remap as that gave good gains for the money on my old car.
If anyone has that head unit, you will have noticed that I have relocated the USB port to the rear so that no wires are visible in the cockpit. If anyone is interested in the mod then I could throw a guide together.
-
I'm thinking of swapping my Kenwood for an Alpine, what are they like in terms of ease of use and sound quality? I remember when I was 18 if you didn't have an Alpine or Pioneer head unit you weren't cool.

I have corrected my post now, mine is a Pioneer not an Alpine as I had put! My old one was an Alpine!.... Yeah, for sound quality it is very good, I'm only on stock speakers and it's a hell of a lot better than the VW stereo, but on the other hand, I guess anything is better than stock.
I wouldn't say its particularly user friendly for the average person who just wants to plug and go, the usual bass and treble options are replaced with an equalizer that needs setting up.
I'd say that its perfect for someone who is planning a major install as it has lots of options and about 6 pre-outs on the back!
Fitted my new wiper stalk today with help from some guides on here, a lot of bits have to come off just to get to it!
Some other little updates....
Headlight were in need of a refurb, had all gone yellow with tonnes of surface cracks. So removed the light units and wet and dryed from 800 grit down to 2500, then cutting polished and waxed.
Before...

After...

Rear badge was corroded and gone all nasty, so removed it, sanded it and painted it black. These inserts then turned up, which match the interior. Not to everyone's taste I know, but I think it's better than the corroded badge!!
