Hey everyone I'm Adam currently in Great Yarmouth but from Reading originally. This is my first car and I'm pretty new to anything car related so please bare with me. I've got a fair few things I want to do with the Mk5 cosmetically, but going to wait until a GTI is on the cards before I really start messing with performance...maybe. The car itself is a 2004 and as far as I'm aware the engine is as standard as it comes 2.0 FSI near enough 150bhp apparently. Nothing else has been altered on the exterior (I don't think) and I'm trying to keep it as standard looking as I can.
Internal kit spec when I got it -
Full leather interior
Standard wheel
RCD 300 Head unit (Nasty!)
6-disk changer
Bury bluetooth phone kit
Full climate control
Heated seats
Electric sunroof (Can't work out why when you have climate control..)
Changed already -
Replaced the pathetic RCD 300 with an MFD2 (Upgraded)
Installed an XCarKit iPod dock in the glove box (Removed)
Personal plates (Absolute nightmare!)
Initial list of mods -
Mk5 GTI flat bottom wheel (Done-Upgraded)
Highline cluster (Done-Upgraded)
Cruise control (Done)
RNS 510 to replace the MFD2 (Done)
Bluetooth module for RNS (with phonebook feature ideally) (Done)
Replace interior bulbs with white LEDs (Done)
Updated list (Page 7 19/2/15) -
Mk6 flat bottom wheel (Done)
Xenon projector lights (Done)
Mk6 Reversing camera (Done)
Mk6 Highline white cluster with blue needles (Done)
ABS pump upgrade (Done)
Door warning lights (Done)
Mk6 Climate panel (Done)
TPMS (Done)
Still to do -
Armrest MDI from CD changer
Full OPS
17"/18" GTI / R32 wheels
Harder suspension (possibly lowered slightly)
Just after giving it a good clean while visiting my parents in Reading.

You're in luck......The forum Guru, Eddie-NL just happens to live near you and will be able to sort out all of this :-
GTI flat bottom wheel
Highline cluster
Cruise control
RNS 510 to replace the MFD2
MDI to replace the changer in the armrest
Bluetooth module for RNS (with phonebook feature ideally)
For you as an when you need it.
Great first car.
-
Oh that's just brilliant luck thanks for pointing that out Biano44! I'm hoping to get some of it sorted this month if I can before my trip down to see my parents again so will need to see if I can get in touch with Eddie somehow.
Thanks, so far I'm impressed with the car, my dad's had a Mk4 GTI TD, Mk5 R32 DSG, and now has a Mk6 GTD so I knew roughly what to expect from it but had no idea how nice they are to drive, so different to the Kia and Polo I learnt in.
-
Very nice and great colour :happy2:. Look forward to seeing what you do with it
-
Thanks  Just out of curiosity is this Shadow Blue? I love the colour but never know for sure which blue it is and I might just end up looking for a GTI or GT Sport front bumper, looks so much nicer than the one on it now :signLOL:

i have the mdi kits in stock :happy2:

Got a nice little package delivered to work today.

I've still got the glove box and boot ones to install as I didn't get around to doing those at lunch. Will need to order some more for the footwells, and vanity mirrors as I completely forgot about those. They look better even in daylight, I'm not a fan of the standard yellow bulbs in anything, even swapped as many bulbs at home to pure white LED.
-
Good stuff :happy2:. Looking at doing all my interior with LED soon.
-
Hello
Where did you get your LED's from? Really want some but not sure which ones to go for lol
I will probably see your car about as I live in lowestoft but spend a lot of time in Yarmouth :happy2:

Thanks  I'm so glad I did convert everything to LED it's completely transformed the look at night, well worth doing.

I got the LEDs from XenonBulbs.co.uk who also have an ebay shop. The kit I got was this one but I managed to count the number of bulbs for my car wrong even after 3 times checking so need to order a few more http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281211702333 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281211702333).
I was based in Lowestoft for about 4 years but moved around May as the company I work for moved to GY. I really don't miss 'the bridge' at all and from what I've been hearing that's got even worse recently.
-
Decided to put the rest of the LEDs I had in today for something to do. Only had the glove box and boot ones as I'm still waiting for the others to be delivered. I'm really liking the look of these so far, went down to the car the other day at night and took a few photos on my phone so they are a 'little' grainy, will get some better ones when I remember the camera.
As you may have guessed I have a habit of taking photos of everything I do, it's my way of keeping track of things, rubbish memory for this sort of thing!
Glove box before and after, and the boot after.

Not sure whether to change the footwell bulbs as well or leave them as they are, any opinions?
-
nice car u got there :happy2:
i do say you change the last bulbs to white xenon-look
-
Those LED's say ten in a pack but don't you need 12? lol or am I counting wrong?
I think you should change the footwell lights as well :happy2:
-
I like the xcarlink in the glovebox.
Which one did you get?
I also have an MFD2 and would like to get ipod and Bluetooth connectivity setup for my iphone 5s to the MFD2. Have you done this with the xcarlink?

Thanks  Nope your not counting wrong Yorkie92, you do need 12 but I managed to count them wrong and didn't add the rest on to my order :ashamed: I'm now starting to think the footwells will be changing to LED too now so will have to order those later!

Thanks  I got this one http://www.xcarlink.co.uk/product.php?productid=4&cat=2&page=1 (http://www.xcarlink.co.uk/product.php?productid=4&cat=2&page=1) which seems to work pretty well. I wanted to keep the use of the CD changer too for some reason so this was the only 1 that didn't just plain replace it. The iPod can be controlled via the MFD2 with the XCarLink but I didn't bother with bluetooth as my car came with a Bury kit installed when I got it and just seemed like a bit of a waste to get rid of it at that stage.
I will probably be selling this stuff soon as I want to switch out the MFD2 for the RNS510 soon (prefer the look and touch screen) and will use the SD card and MDI instead of the XCarLink. I'm also hoping that I'll be able to get a bluetooth module for it to replace the Bury kit and possibly add voice control

I also want to keep my cd changer so that's perfect! So you just click the AUX button on the MFD2 and it comes up? Is there any chance you could throw up a photo of the screen with the ipod connected?
That iPod connection looks strange to me, did they give you the option to get a lightning cable adapter instead of the standard pin?
How difficult is the wiring for the XCarlink?
Sorry for all of the questions but I've been looking into this for months and you seem to know your stuff!!

No probs, ask away it's 1 of the reasons I joined here. Regarding the connector I actually use my iPod Classic 80Gb specifically for the car so I don't use anything other than that, I can plug my iPhone 5 into the AUX on the XCarLink if I wanted Spotify or something but I've never actually done that. You can get a 30pin to Lightning converter for the newer iPods though.
Installing the XCarLink is really simple with the MFD2, comes with everything you need to get it working. It actually goes in between the CD changer and the MFD2 making use of the changer controls. On the MFD2 you get 6 discs on the screen and those represent the first 5 playlists on the iPod and also a manual mode. CD1 is manual mode which lets you use the iPod as normal and then you can use the MFD2 controls for next and prev, CD2-6 are the iPod playlists and again you get the same controls.
My dad had the MFD2 with the VW factory fitted iPod dock instead of the CD changer in his R32 and that worked exactly the same way so I do wonder if they are actually the same piece of kit. You don't get track names or anything like that through the MFD2 unfortunately, that's 1 of the reasons I'm wanting to do the RNS510 upgrade and switch over to MDI which does have track names and also different connector cables so if I ever wanted Lightning connectivity I could just buy the cable for it. You do get the VW logo on the iPod when it's in use via the MFD2 though which is pretty funky in a sad kinda way
It's a simple but very effective solution to have the best of both worlds really, keep the car looking standard but also have more up to date hardware like the iPod connectivity. You just switch to the radio and then back to CD to switch between the changer and the XCarLink and it will remember which was last used along with tracks etc.
-
I got onto carxlink direct and asked them about the Bluetooth function.
I was set to buy the whole unti until they told me that I can only use the Bluetooth function when I'm already using the cd changer function.
As in if I'm listening to the radio or if I have it turned off, it won't work at all which is ridiculous so I think I'll keep on looking :(

That's a bit rubbish about the bluetooth only working when using the XCarLink source. It does however make sense thinking about it as the module plugs directly into the XCarLink and not the MFD itself so the MFD doesn't know the bluetooth even exists. My Bury bluetooth kit goes between the main loom and the MFD so it can 'hijack' the output regardless of what source is being used.

Little update on progress.
Yesterday saw the first of the big mods for me so far happen on the car. I met up with Eddie-NL for a gateway change, cruise fitting and highline fitting, unfortunately the highline wouldn't work in my car so we've put that one on hold for the time being and got going on the other bits. I just about got the courage to pull the dash apart to fit my MFD2 let alone fit the cruise so I'm really grateful for Eddie's help on all of this stuff, and hopefully more to come!
We did a few scans of the car too to find out if my passenger door issue was controller related or something else but looks like it may be something else so that's going to have to wait for anther day.

After all of this was done I was sorting a few other bits out and I noticed a few marks on the seats and now I know about them they will bug me. I had a little read up on cleaning the interior as I thought I'd try and blitz everything properly when I do it so I popped out and picked up a few bits to get started.

A package arrived for me at work on Friday

I've been looking around for weeks for an RNS510 to replace the MFD2 I installed when I got the car. I finally found this version H at the right price so jumped right on it. The unit arrived before lunch at work so decided it was being installed before it burnt a hole in my desk!
Out with the old!

I'm really happy with how it looks, it just makes the whole interior look much better somehow. The only issue with the unit at the moment is that it doesn't seem to take CDs or DVDs into the drive, they just stop as if there is already a disk in the drive or something else is blocking them. If anyone has any ideas about this please let me know.
Hoping to get some more bits done soon which should really bring everything up to where I want the car to be, watch this space!
-
Good upgrade! It sure makes a difference in the interior. :happy2:
I'd contact the seller asking about the non functioning drive. If you want to upgrade your firmware or maps you'll need it to read the CD or DVD, not to mention if you want to watch a DVD movie or listen to music.
I hope it's easy to fix. It's repairable but I don't know at what cost if the seller doesn't take care of it.
Cheers
-
Coming along well this car, good work :happy2:
-
Looks great.
How much did you pay for the RNS510 if you don't mind me asking. What extra bits (if any) did you need to get the sat nav working - GPS aerial etc.
-
Great car there mate keep it up :happy2:

I paid £370 for it in the end (Still waiting to see if I can get that lower due to the drive not taking disks). It came with a GPS antenna, although I already had 1 installed from when I did the MFD2 so didn't actually use it, and all I needed extra was the antenna adaptor to convert the 2 single plugs into a dual plug which I got for about £7 next day delivery.
Seems like I'm doing something new to this car every weekend at the moment! This weekend it was time to say goodbye to the midline and hello to the highline :jumping: Many thanks to Ed for coming over to fit it at stupidly short notice :drinking: I also pulled all the XcarLink stuff out as I just don't see me using it with a hard drive and SD card reader built into the RNS, will probably upgrade the CD changer to MDI at some point but more things on the cards first  Also need to see if I can get a replacement climate control panel as I scraped it when installing the MFD2 and now it's really bugging me!
Checking everything is as it should be before dropping it in
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff150%2Fboardyuk%2Fhighline-programming_zpsb650e0d0.jpg&hash=6c2dbf63527eb3a1dec2fe12847e9cb7d3344cb7)
And it's in, along with the RNS510.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff150%2Fboardyuk%2Fhighline_zps2b596faf.jpg&hash=6333f5054282a3bc63d2275823141e3c0a1c3442)
I'm loving that the directions from the nav show up on the screen of the highline which for some reason I thought only worked on the white highine, can't wait to get a MFSW in there so I can get the full benefit from it!
We also enabled the alarm chirp on lock as I have a habit of locking the car as I'm walking away from it, then when I've walked an annoying distance away thinking 'did it lock?!' then walking back only to find it did, now I can hear if it locks...it's the small things in life :signLOL:
-
Another very good upgrade! With a full FIS you can do/see a lot more. Not sure if you have access to the Confort Menu that allows to program door un/locking, side-view mirror dipping, etc. It also allows you to get a PolarFIS module. :happy2:
I've recently upgraded my Climatronic control panel to the Mk6's generation so I have my old control panel available for sale. It's in mint condition. Send a PM if you're interested. You might consider do the same upgrade as well.
Cheers

It's all about creature comforts :happy2:
The little chirp makes all the differance
Where abouts in yarmouth are you anyway?

I'm possibly looking at the xCarlink again so I've a few questions for you if you don't mind?
Does the MFD2 come out handy enough with the 2 supplied radio removal keys?
How did you secure the xcarlink in the glovebox? Did you have to drill a hold to feed the cable and then secure it in place with 4 bolts?
Is the wiring on the back of the MFD2 handy enough to do?
Thank you!!
-
Thanks all, got confirmation of the next few mods today so should see more changes in the next few weeks hopefully

It is indeed, I'm about 2 roads back from the front on the way to Sainsburys.

Sure, I got my dad to give me a hand drilling out the 4 holes to mount the XCarLink in the glovebox (he did it in his Porsche so he knew what he was doing!) and then used 4 bolts to hold it in place. There's already a pretty big gap behind the VW folder near the right which passes behind the console so easy to get things wired in without too much hassle.
Once you get the sections of trim off that need to come off to remove the MFD2 it's just held in with 4 screws (mine doesn't use radio keys for the head unit those are for the changer in the arm rest), then it's just a case of give it a firm tug and out it pops, being careful not to do what I did and let it hit the climate controls as it marks easily. It's really easy to do once you know what your removing, I replaced my MFD2 with the RNS510 in about 15min the other day so it's not too hard at all.
Wiring it in is as easy as pop the changer plug out from the main harness, plug the XCarLink where the changer plug came out from and plug the changer into the XCarLink. The plugs will only go in 1 way so it's simple as can be, there's also a ground cable to connect so I just attached this to a ground point on the MFD2 and that was it.
I'll see if I can get a pic of the wiring for you later tonight if you want now I've pulled it all out.
-
Fantastic, a pic would be great!
I'm still in between minds as the Bluetooth isn't great but it's a cheap fix and I don't want to change my MFD2 as I have it fully loaded with sat nav etc.

This is the XCarLink I had installed with the MFD2.

The CD changer connector is blue in the existing loom so when you unplug that it then gets plugged into the black socket on the XCarLink. You then plug the XCarLink blue connector into the original loom in the same place as the CD changer one was (they only go in 1 way). The spade connector at the bottom right then goes to a ground point to make the whole thing work (there's 1 on the back of the MFD2), really simple and doesn't require any cutting any wires as it just sits in-line.
Personally I wouldn't bother with the Bluetooth module from them if you have to be using the XCarLink for it to pick up the call as it kinda makes it a little redundant. I had the Bury kit installed before getting the XCarLink and that will work regardless of what's going on with the MFD2, it just mutes the MFD2 when a call comes in or you make one and uses the speakers in the car, obviously it's more wiring but worth it. I'll be getting selling both of mine once I get a Bluetooth module for the RNS510, just looking for the right module. Shoot me a PM if your interested

Very helpful!
I'm only staying interested as I have code for 15% off and when you buy the whole kit it's cheaper but loads anyway so all in its only around £80 for the lot which I then need posted to Ireland.

That's not bad for the whole kit, I think I paid that for just the iPod module without the bluetooth!

I thought there was actually a problem online. Here's the breakdown
XCarLink - £78.25
Bluetooth - £40.68
Cable - £3.12
Should total £122.05 but when you add all 3 it comes up as £101.71 in the cart only.
Must be a package deal.
That with a 15% discount and I'm at £86
Apologies it's 10% off so I'm at £91

Ah, I think you'll find the product page on the site shows the price inc. VAT and then in the cart it shows exc. VAT for some reason, which isn't confusing at all

Another few mods done this weekend, again many thanks to Ed for helping me out.
This week I had a few packages turn up being my footwell and vanity mirror LEDs I forgot to order with the first lot...idiot! I was also waiting for the door lights to arrive and decided to get the RNS voice control installed too. Ed came over to sort those out for me, while he was pulling the doors to pieces I swapped the interior lights over to the LEDs and also got the RNS510 out again so the voice control mic could be fitted.
We also took the opportunity to pull the unit to pieces as I've been having drive issues with it not accepting disks, which looks like drive is DOA so will be contacting the guy I got it off to see if he'll either sort me one out or refund the cost of one as I don't want to send the unit back...waited long enough to find one in the first place!
This moment was a little scary for me!

I finally decided to go for some new headlight bulbs as the ones in at the moment are absolute poop and deserve to scrapped :fighting: Sidelight bulbs were free so they will probably go in the spares box. One of the things I've been waiting for was a new Mk6 switch kit so I got around to fitting those during lunch which has really improved the look again I think.

I love the brushed chrome buttons and dials, it makes the interior that bit more upmarket. Did you do the fuel release?
Need the Chrome A/C surrounds too if you haven't already, think they are only about £6 for 3 on ebay.

Thanks, I'm really happy with the way it's looking now! I'm still in two minds about the A/C chrome surrounds, I also can't seem to find them on eBay, do you have a link at all @Scottymon (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=7640)? I didn't do the fuel release as I couldn't find any of the individual switches. My kit came with one but it also had the boot release attached to it so won't fit, think it's actually for a Passat. I'm not overly fussed about it though to be honest as it's not in clear view so can't bug me too much (I sometimes even forget it's there!)
I got around to fitting my Fiscon Basic Plus on Tuesday but only just got around to posting. The install was probably the easiest thing I've done so far including installing the RNS510. It really is plug and play (probably helped that Ed coded the phone in at the weekend for me though :happy2:), the only thing I had to do was to route the mic cable to the driver side door pillar for now but even that wasn't overly hard after seeing Ed do it at the weekend :signLOL: I will be moving it up to the light dome when I can remove the Bury mic.
Still getting used to the Bury screen not being there but it looks so much tidier now. The amount of cabling I pulled out from the Bury kit was unreal, whoever installed it looks like they just forced everything into whatever gap they could find! The RNS phone screen is so nice and when in a call I can even see the name, number, and even have some options on the MFD which I wasn't expecting to get, also much happier now it doesn't just mute the music but actually pauses it...small things again
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff150%2Fboardyuk%2Fphone_zps536b97ce.jpg&hash=15c7d595496716cd859750ab06ca3591a6bc5d81)
Hoping that the little gap where the Bury screen was will 'heal' itself over time and close up again but I can live with that as it's not hugely noticeable, just being a bit of a perfectionist...again.
-
Those fuel cap switches can be bought from aliexpress. Here you go! http://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/6251870576.html
I was taking a look at the installation and it looks like a whole door card removal which I have done on the passenger side to replace the handle. It's not a tough job but I'd like to avoid it so I was looking at my fuel switch yesterday while waiting for my new fuel switch to arrive.
I actually managed to pop up the plastic around the fuel switch on the outside. It looks like the door side is held in with screws. I think I might be able to push it up enough to get my hand under to pop the old switch out and get the new one in.
Anybody have any thoughts on this?
Also, on the chrome AC surrounds, I personally hate them. Yes it's an easy mod but I don't think it does anything to add to the car.
-
The Fiscon Basic Plus is a great bit of kit.
To get good looking chrome AC surrounds can I suggest this?:

You can get an used mk6 climatronic from ebay and the Jetta frame from a VW dealer.
It's not too hard to fit and with your RNS-510 will look great.
Bold-sport is selling the kit with the required wire to make it work but with a climatronic for heated seats: http://www.bold-sport.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&path=43_39&product_id=149 (http://www.bold-sport.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&path=43_39&product_id=149).
I got mine fitted by a friend who knows out to make all these electronic mods seem easy.

Cheers for the link @lukemk5gti (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10176), may pick one up if it bugs me more. Not 100% on door card removal so it will really have to bug me before I do it :signLOL:

Have to be honest @Shoduchi (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10590) I am seriously tempted to do the Mk6 climate mod! I will have to see how full the piggy bank is after raiding it for the other mods I already have planned

The fuel switch can be removed/changed from the bottom of the door card. No need to remove completely.
-

So you just pop the bottom of the door card out enough to get a hand in? When I popped passenger side one out all of the plastic connections stayed in the actual door so I had to take the card off entirely to remove the plastic connections and put them back on the card! A lot of hassle!
-
Yes just as you say. The door/card connectors are easy to put back in once reset
-
Hmm that's interesting, may need to have a look into this one again then when I get 5min and it stops raining, I could live with only popping the bottom of the card off :happy2:
-
Between the rain at the weekend I built up the courage to take sanding discs to my headlights to clean them up as they were suffering pretty badly with yellow patches and did next to nothing at night. While I was at it I decided to replace the bulbs with the new Philips X-treme Vision 130s I got last week. I picked up a 3M headlight restoration kit for £17 after seeing a review on here and a few Youtube videos thinking how hard could it be...really.
I honestly thought I'd be taking a drive over to VW to get some new headlights after the first pass but the 3M kit is so easy to use it made a noob like me look like I knew what I was doing! Here's before and after shots, the difference on the road with the new bulbs is incredible, I can actually see a good distance in front of me now!

Was well worth the 1.5 hours it took me and the £17 the kit cost, there's still loads of compound left so I can always go over them again if they get yellow again.

Update from Wednesday evening. After a short wait I've got 1 of the main things I wanted to get done to this car, swapped the wheel for the flat bottom MFSW  I was wanting to do this from the moment I got the car, my dad had the same wheel in his R32 and has the Mk6 version in his GTD.
I also got a package from @demon666 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2936) the same day which included number plate LED kit, and new fuel release switch. While I waited for Ed to arrive I swapped out the plate light modules with the LED ones, the difference is immense even in daylight.

This switch was a real PITA to change out. Ed and I spent about 20min fighting with the old 1 getting it out, finally it gave and looks so much better now.

Well it's been a little while but last weekend Ed came over again and he had a few goodies for me. First was a new DVD drive for my RNS510 as the original one was DOA and the seller refused to help out with sorting it. That was replaced pretty quickly and while the unit was out he re-routed my Fiscon mic cable a bit better for me so I could get the mic up to the map lights out of the way.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff150%2Fboardyuk%2Fdvd_zpsbc2d3735.jpg&hash=3f06d3e380014768dfd9e21956cada13dacfc1a0)
As I've mentioned in here before the climate controls have been rubbed by the head unit coming in and out previously and the mark has been really bugging me. I love the Mk6 controls but have been really reluctant to do the mod after reading of so many people having to try many panels before they worked properly, compressors not running, flaps not working, etc so I was looking for a replacement Mk5 version. Ed bought his Mk6 panel with him and said we could give it a shot and just see what happens.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff150%2Fboardyuk%2Fclimate_zps2c2f7328.jpg&hash=084863cf2890fbe8cc6b9f4fb709cd769e525a36)
Well it worked first time, I was really not expecting it to and from Ed's reaction neither was he! Obviously it wasn't 100% as wiring needs changing for everything to function fully, etc but it proves the Mk6 panel will work :happy2:
Last thing we...he did was to install the TPMS. With that done he just realigned my steering wheel for me as it wasn't quite equal on both sides and then went for a drive to make sure everything was ok and find out if my RNS had Video In Motion enabled, which it didn't so Ed said he'd come over agan and help me sort that at some point. Should keep passengers amused on trips to scuba diving sites and during surface intervals :pomppomp:

I'd recommend getting in the Group Buy that DamoP is organizing to buy the Bold Sport's mk6 climate control panel with frame kit.

To be honest as soon as I saw it in place even without the surround and working with the RNS I was sold. I was going to join the group buy but I had this panel off Ed straight away as I know it works, just waiting for the surround and wiring loom to come now, then getting it fitted :jumping:
I think this MAY be my last mod of the year with xmas coming up...but I am pretty tempted by rear footwell lights though :innocent: There's just so many little things you can do to these things that improve it so much!

I thought Eddie had brought his control panel for test purpose only, but of course if he was selling it I wouldn't hesitate to buy it from him as well. I got mine very similarly, as I was at my friend's garage fitting the door warning lights and he had a couple of control panels (and the rest of the parts needed to upgrade from manual AC to climatronic :surprised:, as he already made that upgrade to his Golf), so I asked about what would it cost me to fit the mk6 AC control panel and it was pretty cheap. When my wife saw the dash that day without the frame she was WTF? :signLOL:
I ordered the windows and fuel chrome switches that I think will be the last mod this year. Next year will finally get some new wheels. :jumping:

cheers for the mention dude

To be honest I thought it was only for test when he came over but when he offered it to me I couldn't say no :signLOL:
Had another visit from Ed on Sunday morning as my trim had turned up for the climate panel so that could be sorted. Many thanks @Eddie-NL (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2345) for your help...again :pomppomp: I'd have stood no chance doing this properly, I didn't realise how many pins needed swapping on my car for the motors to work properly. The RNS510 video in motion was also coded while the trim was swapped out so that's another little party trick it has and can also be used to keep certain passengers quiet on long journeys :happy2:
Here's how it looked before.

Nicely done! :happy2:

Sooo after me saying that my Mk6 climate mod was the last one of the year, I found something at such a good price I couldn't pass them up. I've already been chatting with Ed and planning some mods for next year so that could be a pretty good year if it all comes off

skoda LED DRL's in the foglights
10 points, was a bit of an easy one I suppose :signLOL:
I've been down at my parents place in Reading for a while (back home tomorrow though) but while I've been here and after talking to my dad I've decided to spend a bit more time on keeping my car clean, he's always maintaining his in some way shape or form and they always look really good when he's done.
While I can't really do anything major to the car until the weather gets a bit warmer (and I get some more ££ for the bits I need), I decided to get myself some Rain-X to make it a little safer for the rainy days and nights driving. I was originally going to get some Gtechniq G1 ClearVision Smart Glass stuff but my dad convinced me to try Rain-X first as it's cheaper and also the stuff they recommend on his Porsche forum, so I figured why not!
A few goodies from Halfords
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff150%2Fboardyuk%2F2014-12-27113139_zps2410ed4d.jpg&hash=bd18001c4409a0d215f2075119c78b581fb8d39e)
In my parents garage applying the Rain-X
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff150%2Fboardyuk%2F2014-12-27141002_zps42c08a47.jpg&hash=725eb8e8c517ac3928add073aef41287bef7bdaa)
I put 2 layers of Rain-X on the outside and when I tested with a spray bottle the water just runs straight off, very impressive! As I had the anti-fog stuff too I put 1 layer of that on inside to see if it will actually work, I'm a little dubious but we shall see.
Anyway, some pretty big mods coming up soon hopefully, parts are starting to stack up :jumping: :jumping:
-
Well after the drive back from my parents place I can safely say I will not be putting any more of the Rain-X Anti Fog rubbish on again, it didn't fog on the windscreen but caused a film of liquid to slowly run down which then blurred the entire window, which was fun! Luckily I wasn't far from my normal service station stop so I could wipe it off but need to get this rubbish off my window!
The exterior Rain Repellent on the other hand is absolutely fantastic. Driving along at 70mph with no wipers on in the rain and still being about to see out of the window is a new one for me, and I found it's also great fun seeing the sheer look of horror on peoples faces as you pass them with no wipers going when there's on on full whack :signLOL: (Obviously I wouldn't exactly recommend not using your wipers...but it is funny).
Anyway, I've been ordering bits left right and center recently and a few of them turned up today.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff150%2Fboardyuk%2Fvcds-vent-hazzard_zpsf673706a.jpg&hash=7533425da24bc034ea7aa745d9dfb49e335d177a)
New rear AC vent as the one in the car is broken and although I can't see it I know it's broken and has bugged me right from day one, nice cherry hazard button to replace the horrible standard one, a set of trim removal tools I kept on putting off getting, and last but not least got myself a VCDS cable to play around with :fighting2:, luckily had an old laptop sitting around so that has now become my 'car' laptop :happy2:
-
Wow haven't updated this for a while. Done a fair amount to the car in the last month. Once I got hold of my VCDS cable I was able to start tinkering.
The first thing I did was upgrade my CECM to a 30 byte highline to get all the features (nearly) of that. I mainly wanted fogs as DRLs, cornering fogs and also keeping the functionality of the standard fogs, also coded in a few other little bits while I was at it. While I as doing that I also fixed my rear AC vent and installed the new cherry hazard switch.
Back in December I got myself some of the Fabia VRS LED fog DRL units to replace the standard fogs. Unknown to me was that the Fabia (and newer Mk5) has a completely different shape of lens on the fog light and even has a different mounting so a little modding was needed. I ended up grabbing some cheap GTI fogs off eBay and then swapping out the fronts for the Fabia ones, once that was done I needed to cut of one of the mounting clips leaving the 2 on one side holding the unit in. Works nicely enough and makes it look better I think (if I hadn't cracked one of the lenses in a 'you WILL come apart' moment anyway). Ed was a great help supplying the looms I needed to convert the standard VW 2pin plugs to Skoda 3pin ones and giving me a hand getting things in. The only issue I have with these is that the load on the LEDs isn't high enough to stop the bulb out light triggering so I've got that on the dash constantly at the moment, any ideas would be great!
I also had a moment of weakness and bought myself some Depo Projector head lights and a 5000k H7 Xenon conversion kit for them. I've always preferred the look of the projector lights to the standard reflectors but the cost has always put me off doing the mod. After a lot of reading up on the Depo units I decided to just go for it, at the price they were including the conversion kit I just couldn't say no. Ed came over to give me a hand with this as I wasn't 100% with removing the bumper myself and we also had a few load resistors to put on my fog lights to see if it could get rid of the bulb out warning. The swap out was pretty painless really. Everything tested out ok, I'd already coded the Xenons with no shutters while I was waiting for Ed to arrive to stop them flickering. The fog light load resistors while they did get rid of the bulb out warning, they got so hot you could put your hand 2-3cm away from the resistor and feel the heat. While it was nice to be able to do that on that windy day, it wouldn't have been so good in summer while constantly running so I decided I'd just live with the warning light for the time being and work on a plan B.
I've probably forgotten a load of stuff and will post pics up once I've sorted them out. My list of mods to do is decreasing pretty rapidly :signLOL:
-
Had a big day yesterday, @Eddie-NL (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2345) came over and worked his magic on my car once again. This time we tackled the biggest job so far, swapping out my Mk5 highline for a Mk6 white display highline with blue needles. This however also meant swapping out the ABS pump and doing a brake bleed as the ABS pump that was in my car was too old for the cluster.
First off Ed got going on the ABS swap while I attacked the keys to replace the transponders over for the immobiliser without damaging the original transponders for if the car goes back to standard. The actual pump swap went pretty painlessly, then we got to doing the brake bleed and that's where the fun really began. Got all the way around the car without much feeling in the brake pedal at all, on the last wheel I pumped the pedal some really manky nasty fluid came out of the bleed nipple. It was shocking how bad it was! Once that was cleared the pedal felt far better than it had before.
With the pump changed and the brakes bled it was time to code the new pump in and make sure everything was ok. We went for a quick test drive once the coding was done and all seemed good with the brakes, ABS certainly kicks in when you hammer the pedal to the floor (also scares posties on push bikes too :signLOL:) so back we came for the cluster fitting.
The cluster was a nice and simple unplug the old one and plug in the new one via the loom Ed made and code it up. Ed had done a lot of the prep work on the cluster before getting to my place as we'd been talking about doing the swap for a few weeks and he already knew my car pretty well. Anyway, here's the pics from the day and the new cluster just looks amazing. I'd like thank Ed once again for all his help on all of this :happy2:

Yep some great mods there, I'm liking the OEM+ look you've achieved :-)

That is one sweet cluster! Looks brilliant! Does the backlit dimming still work on this?

The cluster looks awesome , i would really like to see a step by step tutorial about fitting these clusters on mk5. Tools needed ,looms ,oem codes for the cluster or abs pump. Headlights look great too. Cheers
-
Thanks all  Every time I start the car the staging on the cluster still brings a massive grin to my face, looks so much cleaner now.

If I knew the step by step for the whole procedure I'd happily try and do a tutorial for it as it's such an amazing mod to get done, however as Ed knows my car pretty well he was able to do an awful lot of the prep work for things before coming round to actually fitting it in the car. You may not need to swap out the ABS pump depending on the year of the car and version running in your car at the moment, mine was an 04 plate and had a pretty old revision pump so I had no option but to replace it with a newer version if I wanted this cluster. As far as fitting it in the Mk5 the internals from the Mk6 were swapped out into a Scirocco housing so it would fit perfectly in the Mk5 (There's a Youtube video of this being done for a colour screen) and Ed made up a loom which means the unit doesn't stick out at all, basically it looks like it's standard kit and looks brilliant.
If you want this doing I really do recommend having a chat to @Eddie-NL (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2345), the amount he knows about this stuff is staggering and has always been a massive help to me even when I panicked due to a flat battery when coding my new CECM :signLOL:
-
Headlights look good, how do the compare for visibility over the standard units?
-
good work fella, should have come over for a look when I was over for my coding with ed. :ashamed:

Nice improvements, looks lovely!
I think I'm going to have to get a set of the Depo headlights! What is the actual difference between the genuine Xenons and the Depo's?
-
Cheers
Headlights look good, how do the compare for visibility over the standard units?
The visibility is on another level to the standard units and I even had 130% XtremeVision bulbs in those which I thought were great! I can now drive on roads without using high beams that I used to need them and if I do kick the high beams on then it's like driving in daylight.
good work fella, should have come over for a look when I was over for my coding with ed. :ashamed:
Yea same here, think I was fighting with getting the headlights out when you turned up if I remember right and then had to code Xenons in, by the time the swearing had stopped you were just leaving :signLOL: Ah well, another time :happy2:
Nice improvements, looks lovely!
I think I'm going to have to get a set of the Depo headlights! What is the actual difference between the genuine Xenons and the Depo's?
In all honesty I'm not 100% sure what the difference is. There's a blue Mk5 TDI that sometimes parks near my house with Xenons and I can't tell if they are genuine units or not, they look exactly the same.

Update from last weekend (I really should post these up when they happen and not a week later!).
After putting the white cluster in the only thing that didn't really sit right with me was the steering wheel...so I got a Mk6 one instead. MUCH better.

The big job of the day was finally fitting the RVC I'd wanted ever since my dad got one in his Mk6 GTD. Credit goes (yet again) to @Eddie-NL (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2345) for supplying and fitting this for me. Not only does the back of the car look much better with the new style badge, I also have the camera displaying on the RNS510 to keep my inner child happy and it makes parking so much easier! I don't know what I'll do when I get a new car if it doesn't have this feature  (Ignore the filthy car, it's done about 5 trips on the motorway in snow, rain and hail so really needs a clean :ashamed:)

That's it for now on the big things. I've got some other big mods already in the pipeline but a few months of small tidying up things and saving before the next big one happens I think :happy2:

Does the badge open itself? Bit of a daft question

It does open by itself when I put the car in reverse, closes again after being out of reverse for a few seconds.

Great work again, love the camera...one day
