Hi all, this is my second mk5, the first I did nothing to , however since that I've had a few other cars but none I've enjoyed as much as the golf so I went and test drove the GT and I just loved it, enough power for childish moments, comfortable and I liked the interior!
My First MK5...

On to the GT...
The spec as I purchased it:
170 BHP Turbo engine
Standard Headunit
Heated Leather interior & Arm Rest
GT Classix wheels
Rear Cup Holders
Dimming Rear View Mirror
I am quite happy to point out the head unit only took around 45 mins to fit and was waiting for me upon my return with the car
The shopping list grows daily...eBay and Performance VW magazines being a deadly thing - So far its roughly as follows:
Touchscreen Head Unit - Done!
Refurb & Powdercoat wheels - Done!
GTI honeycomb lower grill - Done!
Fit GTI grill - Done!
Pressed/tin plates - Done!
GTI Sideskirts - Done!
GT Seat Inlays - Done!
K&N Panel Filter - Done!
Lowering Springs - Done!
Cruise Control - Done!
Multifunction Steering Wheel - Done!
Polo Aerial - Done!
Tint windows
Black headlights
Speed line/CH rep wheels
GTI Boot Spoiler
Backbox Delete
I'll probably get those done first, as well as try and sort a few scratches etc but it'll get there over time!

My first ever attempted at polishing a car!
I've never polished a car before, none of the others seemed to need it however, being a black car, I thought it might help. Trolling through YouTube to give me a few ideas on where to start I grabbed some bits and Turtlewax's Black polish and set to work, I was doing by hand.
Pre-clean

I quite like the metallic paint, looked much better after the polish
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fag279%2Fjimmycolley921%2FIMG_0002_zps0ceb0cbc.jpg&hash=4bea024c8824ab573599b4819b7e17eb9ffc3301)
I liked the fact I could see my reflection, should have taken the photo before I polished the rear door though...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fag279%2Fjimmycolley921%2FIMG_0004_zps86a5190e.jpg&hash=d8a3cd88e5f2f6b8eb503f0bbcf2f0170499fd92)
Polish on the roof, could probably do with tighter circular motions next time...

Thought it wasn't bad for my first attempt...will get better with practice. Any hints or tips on polishing would be more than welcome!
I'll update this thread with the mods as I go on...thanks for looking!

Really chuffed with how the head unit looks! Fits perfectly and looks OE quality.
-
Looks really good, where did you get the Head Unit?
Also if you thought bay and magazines are a bad influence, prepare for this place to be a lot worse haha :happy2:

Thanks mate, its an eBay special, Erisin I think its called, I just couldn't afford the genuine one, however you can set this up to display the VW logo on start up and the satnav etc works really well. the only thing I had to do was route the GPS receiver onto my dash for better signal but the trim just clips in around the wire so no drama. Only cost £180 ish!
-
So the Postman Pat dropped me my presents today...
My new GTI grill...I'll add some photos later for before and after...Obviously the GTI badge will be coming off...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fag279%2Fjimmycolley921%2FIMG_1523_zpsb62c114e.jpg&hash=973ab38799fac3e6787d37dacde88d06eb1beeaa)
I also swiped a black tax disk holder off ebay for £1 as I had a blue one in there and it wasnt going with the whole black and red idea...not going to bother photographing that...I'll let your minds run wild on what it looks like...
The grill fitting, you can see the original one in the polish photos above...
No grill
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fag279%2Fjimmycolley921%2FIMG_1525_zps65a85960.jpg&hash=5cb23d526b3338f2802b176507dcaa46effb6ecb)

Now I have made the ultimate school boy error and didn't check to see if the badges where compatible to swap over and guess what...the one I have is too big
Now to troll around and find on that will fit with the necessary bits...

i could be interested in selling mine off my ed30 if you need it let me know

I notice that you mentioned window tints in your wishlist but you might want to consider Sonniboy shades (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,85287.msg874385.html).
They'll cost you around £100 but look like privacy glass at first glance, they're removable and they stay in place with the windows down, retaining privacy and doing a great job to eliminate buffeting.
-
Have you got a link to your headunit mate?

Hmm, they do look good I must admit...tints will probably be one of the last things I do, I want to get the ride hight sorted first, reduce some of that damned arch gap!

So my wheels went in for refurb and paint earlier this week and this was the end result! I'm dead chuffed with it, I also got the badge on the grill too...

My god I must do something about the arch gap...
Ha ha... yes you do :)!
Since you are obviously going for a Darth Vader look, you might consider changing the headlights with black one (GTI/GTSport) :driver:.

Tell me, on yours what suspension set up are you running? I'm considering budget coilovers but I'm a bit concerned as I've only ever used springs before?

Bilstein B16 PSS 10 :happy2:. Not really budget @1000+ GBP .

Remedy for the exhaust suffering from black death...
As you may or may not know, my exhaust was previously covered in black sh*t...I hated how this looked as it looked nasty and dirty, which it was.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fag279%2Fjimmycolley921%2FIMG_1593_zps386034ae.jpg&hash=19c4f5f9aba0bf85499d09ba38b7e9d3805ee210)
Having had today off I decided to give it a bash, digging out my trusty wire brush, some fine wet & dry and some brake cleaner. Heres how it looked afterwards:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fag279%2Fjimmycolley921%2FIMG_1595_zpsda80ca40.jpg&hash=a74efe163ff25f3358f143979212b3d625167431)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fag279%2Fjimmycolley921%2FIMG_1596_zps8e16c299.jpg&hash=f2567832aadfb5799505b8c02c2dbc98b6cbda3a)
Considerably better I thought, the brake cleaner managed to break down most of it, and the wire brush got rid of the worst, managed to tidy it all up a bit with the wet and dry  At least it looks more like it should!

Lower grill replacement
Having fitted the GTI upper grill I decided it needed the lower to match, mine seemed pretty stiff to pull out, but sure enough pulling it to the point of breaking popped out some of the clips, then using a plastic pry bar I was able to pull out the rest.
Before:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fag279%2Fjimmycolley921%2FIMG_1610_zps9ad12402.jpg&hash=9f328437b4e74151f9248cddf386d236cb27543a)
Using a bin as a handy shelf...none genuine grill but money dictated!

Really happy with how it looks, just need to do the fog light trims next pay day, but it now matches the top half!

26th September - New bits done
A few little details, added a K&N panel filter which has made the engine breath that little bit better, as we all know it doesn't add 10000000000000000000000bhp but it does improve throttle response.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fag279%2Fjimmycolley921%2FIMG_1644_zps36c96fd5.jpg&hash=3e181dd89d7b7bc77a0f8b09d8c72f0dc52a4083)
My rear badge backing had faded and was looking absolutely pony...I could be bothered to keep trying to use back to black, banana peel, etc for the rest of the years so I had my mate cover it in wrap, looks much better now in my opinion.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fag279%2Fjimmycolley921%2FIMG_1647_zps19fbd90d.jpg&hash=0ad3cad63da0f4904e32363d463eeade120736cd)

More bits...
Managed to find these replica GTI style front fog grills on eBay for about £11 so whilst at work I ordered them not realising they where coming from Gong Wong (Hong Kong). In fairness they didn't take too long to turn up and plus at £11 I couldn't really complain, I have been told I'll need to change the fog lamps for these to fit, however I'll be giving fitting them a go soon!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fag279%2Fjimmycolley921%2FIMG_1821_zps6045cab3.jpg&hash=6ede37df1f83ae35a34c8e31bdea6ff4e7ad3d90)
EDIT: Here they are fitted
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fag279%2Fjimmycolley921%2FIMG_1823_zps5a3a23c8.jpg&hash=c7db1bf80ad5b511ae2091b1e9525a02ace8e260)
These are dead simple to fit, one phillips head screw on the left hand side of the grill and the just pop off! Really happy with the front end now! :happy2:
-
If those grills fit in a GTI they will fit in your Golf. The bumper is the same and I changed them in mine too. GTI fog lamps have a lenses and ours don't. That's the only difference.
Only Golfs with the regular front bumper need to get replica GTI grills that are for retrofitting from a regular bumper or change the fog lamps.
Cheers

Literally just fitted them, they look great and like you said, no need to change the fogs!

Being fed up with the swirls on my lights but being too nervous to take any wet and dry to them, I decided to try this Maguiars kit. I'm quite impressed, it takes a few passes to notice improvement, I stopped tonight as I had to dash off, but I will be giving it another go tomorrow.

New Snow Foam Lance :evil grin:
With the new lance for the Karcher arriving today and collecting the GTI side skirts for the car, I felt the need to give her a wash. The lance wasn't badly priced and works brilliantly in my opinion! I used Demon Foam for mine. Heres the link to the lance incase anyones looking for one. It should fit on any of the Karcher K series.

Having foamed the car and left it for about 5-10 mins to soak I hosed off the foam, which had done the worst for me, I then went over with Turtle Wax 'Wash and Wax' which gives a nice finish in my opinion!
The side skirts I will leave till later today, I did give them a go, however I had to dash for a night shift...which I finished at 4:30am so I am writing this just before sleeping...which is most wanted!
-
Just a little thing before you fit the side skirts, you need to make sure there isn't any polish/wax on the section of paint that you'll be bonding them too. I think the easiest way is to just give the lower section of the car a quick wash with warm water and fairy liquid which will strip off both wax and polish as well as any grease etc that might effect how well they stick.

GTI Side Skirts
Really easy to fit, held on mainly by a screw at the front, which also holds on the arch lining and one underneath. If in doubt just lay the skirt next to the car to narrow down your search. They are also held on by adhesive tape. I have found the tape to be fairly unreliable, so I have used tiger-seal to bond it on.

Being fed up with the swirls on my lights but being too nervous to take any wet and dry to them, I decided to try this Maguiars kit. I'm quite impressed, it takes a few passes to notice improvement, I stopped tonight as I had to dash off, but I will be giving it another go tomorrow.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fag279%2Fjimmycolley921%2FIMG_1897_zpsad4618f5.jpg&hash=e9e075f2dac1252a78f23c59a742c5b84d44c3e2)
did you use a mains drill or cordless? any good?
I used a cordless drill, seems to struggle a little bit however my lights might be a bit far gone! I still need to give it another go since this last post...I'll put some more pictures up as soon as i've done it.

A little known fact about these is they come with imploding mirrors upon impact...
Driving home from work after a 12 hour night shift I was very very tired and perhaps on the verge of nodding off, I took the motorway home with the window open thinking it would help, the road works narrowed the road down to a single lane of which I mis judged the distance between me and the cones at which point I clipped one with the front quarter and my wing mirror internally combusted next to my face...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fag279%2Fjimmycolley921%2FIMG_2036_zpsc3eb5da7.jpg&hash=e4a6a8d2ac9ba66d3da8c6de57776324c7a9eb67)

May not be as bad as you expected but I'm both livid with myself and devastated...plans have been put on hold for a while until I can get this sorted! Thankfully TPS have the bits in stock so I just need to find somewhere that can fit and spray the bits...
Take note guys and gals - never EVER drive tired, no matter how competent at driving you are, its very easy for mistakes to happen! I was just lucky there wasn't anyone around or big machinery to hit...
In the mean time...this is me...

Nice car, really unfortunate about what just happened however! Keep it up hope you don't loose the motivation for it!
Quick tip for when I saw you putting wax on previously, straight lines not circles! :happy2: You maybe know this by now already just thought I'd say as you did ask for tips! Good work though!

Thanks mate! I got the door mirror sorted today, thankfully I have a friend who works in a body shop and was able to spray and fit the mirror over night and is sorting the wing and bumper next week. I have a track day on Sunday at Brands Hatch so I didn't want to do the journey with no wing mirror!
Thanks for the tip, it was polish not wax I was applying, I'll bear it in mind for wax but is polishing circular motions mainly? Also how many passes should I give each panel for best results?
Thanks again dude :)

Great news, not too long then which is always good! Hopefully not to much sting to the bank balance either I hope!
I personally wouldn't use circle motions for anything to be honest, but I would perhaps save your money for other detailing items as I wouldn't hand polish either! I don't find you can really get much done with the hand, in my personally opinion! Save up for a nice DA maybe?
Anyways, glad to hear you got your mirror sorted! :happy2:

Not one to be put down...
Despite my little indiscretion with some cones on the motorway the other day I managed to get the parts together to replace the wing mirror, and get it sprayed dead chuffed with the outcome! The rest of the body work is going in next week.
I love the car too much to loose interest, however having to watch funds for obvious reasons, I saw a few people having done the seat inserts on their models and thought I could stretch to those to show the girl I still care...yes @Eniqmatic (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10013) this is your fault :happy2:

I went for the red to match a few other little bits...red and black, original I know! But still, they do add a little something to the interior.

Are your wheels OEM classix 17" ?
What colour did you get them painted? as they look great.
Did the centre plastic cover paint up ok?
Are you going to replace the vw logo? think it would look better, couldn't they mask them?

Hi mate yeah they are the OEM classix 17", they are painted in metallic gunmetal grey, I'm just waiting for the new centre caps to come in the post! Little did I realise when I ordered them that they where coming from Bulgaria!

Looking good so far,Think the gti black lights will set the front of nicely

I finally got my baby back tonight, with the body repairs and a full service and a new battery...costly bitch but I still love her! I'm amazed, she was a little lumpy before hand but the new battery has smoothed it out. Plus the bodywork where I hit the cone is almost perfect!
Gave her a first clean having had her back. Only a little clean to get rid of the dust...

More little things...
I got fed up on seeing the gap where there should be something in my cup holder slot ...So I ordered the bottle opener/divider. Little things like that annoyed me so I'm now content! :happy2:

Excuse the dirty cup holder...
Lows...
Finally got round to ordering my springs, I was going to go coilovers however the ones in my price range would sacrifice a lot of ride comfort, seen as its my daily I didn't want to ruin that! So I found these springs on eBay. 40mm lowering I felt would be enough. Cant wait to get these fitted!

Cars looking sound matey. :happy2: I myself soon got the modding bug after getting my GT. (Check out my build thread) kinda at a standstill now though, not sure where I want to go next, You any idea how much a forge blow off valve is? You got any other performance mods planned? I'm was thinking maybe getting mine Revo mapped, stainless steel down pipe, sports cat.

Thanks mate! It was so much more affordable in my case then a GTI, only reason I changed the front end was because I liked the red pinstripe and the honeycomb grills! Need to make up a holder to get the GT badge on the front again. The Forge blow off valves for ours (assuming yours is petrol) are around £200.
See attached link: http://www.forgemotorsport.co.uk/Blow_Off_Valve_and_Kit_for_Audi_VW_SEAT_and_Skoda_TSI_14_Twincharged_Engines--product--760.html
I really want one for mine, but I want some CH reps more

iPod connection...
When I purchased my headunit I was that exited to fit it I didn't bother really employing any of the other connections. I then found my old iPod touch and though it was about time I fitted the lead, so out she came again! I love how easy the head units on these are to remove! Took me a little bit of fiddling, but I managed to feed the wire through to the glove box to allow me to leave it in there and forget about it! Dead chuffed as it had a load of my old songs from my collage years :jumping:

I am so happy with the springs, they gave me the drop I was after and didn't sacrifice too much ride comfort, I would love to go lower but I don't want to ruin the ride. Its so much better in the corners as well!

Clean...
Gave the girl a good wash and polish! I love this snow foam, DemonShine Snow Foam, I find it works really well breaking down the dirt, then giving me a chance to get in there with a mitt and Turtle Wax Wash'n'wax before rinsing off with a shammy.

Hi mate sorry for the delay in replying the link is below, ride has been brilliant, my more sporty with a sensible ride height still! No nasty bashes etc, had mine tracked etc by the wheel alignment centre in Southampton as he's local and a bloody genius!

I wasn't quite happy with the spray job on the wheels, there where a few runs in them and the paint was peeling so I found a set of steelies to run around on whilst I get the alloys re-sprayed, I'm thinking about going a hyper silver with heavy metal flake, what do you guys think?

Replaced the DV with the newer Revision E as I'm very picky and it felt like the Revision D wasn't pulling its weight as the boost gauge was dropping off when the turbo should kick in. Old Rev D is on the left and Rev E is on the right
it's a pretty straight forward job to do, if in doubt look on the forge websites for their blow off valves, they give an instruction sheet which shows you how to remove the standard one.
