Title: Which battery?
Post by: cjchapman on September 03, 2014, 10:53:29 pm
Hi Guys,

Need to get a new battery asap as mine is pretty much gone. Ive been looking into it and so far the top outcome for me has been the Bosch S5 from carparts4less.

There are two and im confused about which one is the correct one? (if i go for a bosch)

S5 096 works out at £78 including delivery
or
S5 027. Works out at £65 incl delivery

Im open to other suggestions of batteries also.

Thanks!

I went for the Bosch S5 007 with 5 year Warranty. Considered on here to be a good upgrade on the OEM battery. Get it from Euro Car parts - £77.48 Delivered. ( I think its on sale at the moment as its cheaper than the S4 equivalent)

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volkswagen_Golf_2.0_2008/p/accessories-car-batteries/car-batteries/most-popular-car-battery/100-car-batteries/?444771008&0&cc5_996 (http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volkswagen_Golf_2.0_2008/p/accessories-car-batteries/car-batteries/most-popular-car-battery/100-car-batteries/?444771008&0&cc5_996)

WAIT.... use the promo code "ukmk425" for a further 25% off!! Price comes down to £58.11  :surprised:

I paid £76 a month a go for this!!  :fighting:

Hope this helps.

Sub £60 for the Bosch S5 is a great deal, grab that if it's still going --- I've got the Varta Silver above from Tanya, can't fault it.

I can vouch for this one. Had it in a couple of years now and had no problems. Better than the original.

My battery will be 7 years old in November, I'm wondering if i should replace it soon as a precaution, don't want to get caught out in the dead of winter - I once had one blow up my old Mk4 :surprised: that was about the same age.

What would you recommend ?

I replaced mine as it was seven years old and stopped holding charge.

On my last GT I replaced it at 6.5 years, so with winter coming, my advice is definitely swap it for a new one considering the price.

Whats the issue with the oem battery then guys? My car is nearing 7 years old and still going strong on the original, as is my wifes 2008 Gt tdi 140 should I be concerned? Surely just fit a replacement if starts to struggle or doesn't start one morning! Never heard of intervals for replacing a good Battery, my previous Focus Rs was 11 years old on original Battery also
Thanks in advance

There's not really an issue as such if your battery is ok that's fine.

A lot of people suffer from bad start ups from cold and some say the uprated battery improves this.

And preventative maintenance is never a bad thing as winter approaches

Just ordered one of those TAYNA batteries and found a code that works on a random website.

It's only 5% off but better than nothing ey.

Code is D2BOYS.

like anything batteries have a life and reduce their capacity for holding charge and sharp loads (eg starting) over time.
especially winter
had to replace my scirocco battery as it was very very lazy starting first thing in the morning after i drained the battery with the heated seats accidentally.
got an s5 007 on that one too.

Bit of an old thread but does anyone have a recommendation on where to find a current good deal on a new battery?
That Bosch is £103 now and the ukmk425 code has expired. Having just bought a house last week, I could do with the saving but don' want to scrimp on quality.

Cheers

The Bosch S5 is £88 on Amazon supplied by ECP

I have this fitted and bought from Amazon. There are cheaper options as other posts say.

Thanks guys, I just realised that the 5% code still works at Tayna so the Varta E44 is £64.95 delivered.
Seems like this may be the best deal for me at the moment, unless there are any better discount codes knocking about.

Also...... ..... if I remove the battery will I have to re code the stereo, or does it hold a charge for short periods? Problem being I don't have the PIN code...  :sad1:

Standard stereo won't need a pin code. If you've swapped in a new one, it will. There are little devices you can buy from eBay designed to plug in to the cigarette lighter socket and maintain a current whilst the battery is off

I recently endured the struggle to source an OEM spec battery at a minimal price and it was tough. You can source the Varta e44 on ebay for a very competitive rate but I was told that the reason why they're relatively cheap is because they won't offer any warranty with them.

The Bosch S5 007 from EuroCarparts is £170ish but that'll come with the warranty. As it turns out, the retailer who sells you the battery will have the warranty agreement with the manufacturer which they extend onto you. Hence the price difference.

A local parts store in East London was able to sort me out with the S5 for £110 with the 5 year warranty. Was a decent deal, slightly out of my budget but I scraped a few pennies together for it, the Warranty is whats gold in these things.

Hope that helps

Battery prices seem to be on the up recently.   I bought a chuffing great 105AH Bosch for my Bimmer in 2010 and it was less than £100.   Now the little 096 Golf batteries are considerably more than that.

I got a Yuasa Black for my ED30 from Halfrauds mainly because of the lifetime warranty.  Not too bad for £160.  Another reason for favouring Yuasa is I had good experiences with them back in my UPS power supply days in the IT industry.  They lasted forever!

I'm tempted to get that Bosch one from Amazon especially if it comes from ECP as I have recently changed another battery with them at the local branch under warranty even though I ordered it online.
Was going to get the Varta from Tayna but the possible warranty issue is making me think not as I would have to send it back.

It's better to deal with a local shop with heavy goods.   Can't be fun posting ~20 kg of battery, especially via the post office!!
