Hi all,
Been toying with the idea of getting a set of steels and some wintery tyres as I've gotta use my Gti through the winter to get to work! (country lanes in the snow... ) And I really don't want to play slip and slide and bugger up my monzas (let alone the rest of the car!!!) :driver:
any thoughts??
-
I've used a few winter tyre sets on the GTI, namely Goodyear Ultragrip, Continental Winter Contact and just recently (although not tried yet) Nokian WR A3's.
TBH, I think most premium (well voted winter tyres) will do galatically better than ANY summer tyre in the winter, especially on snow and ice; it's all in the compoud as you know.
Summer tyres are bloody dangerous on snow and ice.
I say definitely grab a set of winter boots if you need to get about, but don't use them until the temps are consistently down below 10C.
I know I couldn't have got home without them last winter:
-
Yep
Best thing to do always change mine to steels with winter tyres.dont look the best but keeps my nice 3sdm alloys all nice :happy2:
Use 16 inch steels with Bridgestone winters works very well
-
Winter tyres in the uk really?
-
Bloody hell Scottymon!! serious snow there!
not expecting it quite that bad down Surrey/Kent way! Not wanting the full winter tyre jobby, just a bit knobblier!
thanks guys! :drinking:

I've used winter tyres for years, on both the van and the car. A spare set of wheels kitted up with winters will be going on both vehicles in the next month or so. Bridgestone Blizzak are on the car wheels at the moment, but I've also used Avon Ice Touring which were excellent. Toyo Snowprox S943 are on the van.
Winter isn't all about snow. Lower temperatures make summer tyres very hard and less grippy, while high silica compound winters stay pliable at lower temperatures.

I snapped up a set of these yesterday, winter tyres are very useful since as said above the lower temps mean summer tyres aren't as grippy as usual which means longer stopping distances and more risk of skidding/ sliding.
Also our winters are pretty unpredictable, one year it can hardly snow at all and the temps don't really go below -5 and the next it can snow like crazy and you see -15 and less. It depends where in the country you live but its still always worth having a set.

f*ck me, that's a seriously good price, just bought a couple, even though I didn't need them. :happy2: :happy2:
-
I know right? I had to read them about 10 times to make sure they were the right ones, the same ones on Mytyres are £175!! That's why I thought I'd post them since anybody who was thinking about getting some might grab some as well.

Haha, I did double/triple take the price tbh, I've bought them for a ton before, but never that price in the last 2/3 years... keep it quiet, and get the stock in! :happy2:

Had the continental winter contacts before and along managed to break traction once in 2 years in ice and quickly regained it. Driving up steep includes in fresh snow no bother. Good for untreated country roads up here in Scotland early morning.
Leaving the golf at home winter mornings and trying Vredestein 4 season tyres on the wife's shopping trolley to get around in. Should wear a bit longer and can keep them on all year.

Try for an All season tyre then mate, not brilliant in the summer or winter, but OK at both, worth considering.
Worst thing about the Mk5 is the windscreen and the lack of heated screen/jets, you can hear the frozen blades in the video above, nasty. Have a heated screen in the Landy and on a Mk1 Focus years back... just brilliant in the winter - was it even an option on the Mk5? Think Ford (BMW/Landrover/Jag/TaTa) had the Copyright at the time, meh.
-
I honestly don't think we need them in the UK unless you are doing long regular journeys during winter time... year before last it was a lot of snow around and I never bothered and didn't get stuck once and my Sessantas performed very well, pulling up a hill where some ML merc was spinning all 4 wheels..
Again to not say that they are not needed or don't give improved grip, they absolutely do... but I don't think they are completely necessary. Use your own discretion.
Heated windscreen not an option, I think the winter pack came with heated washer jets but not sure... with right anti freeze mixture you will be fine.. glass sealants and coatings also help on the windscreen.
-
There's no reason, other than cost, that you wouldn't run a winter tyre on snow/ice roads - they are FAR safer than any summer tyre. I can understand why people in predominately gritted areas with little in the way of mountains would chance summers; still funny watching them, esp. the RWD's.
-
Ive driven through some crazy weather in my mk5s.... never had a problem.
-
:rolleye:
-
I've never run winters on any vehicles and never had any problems and got places a lot of people can't.
As much as winter tyres will improve grip etc, it won't help if the person behind the wheel doesn't know how to drive in the snow.
-
The only thing against winter tyres is that other people who don't use them will either block the road in front of me because they're unable to go, or run into my back end because they're unable to stop.

Definitely, happens every winter (the former part at least)

^^^ fail

If you live in the sticks, like myself, they are a life (and car) saver. People who say we don't need them in this country must not drive on snowy/icy untreated country roads. Had them on the fiesta and will look into them for the golf. What size steels fit over the calipers? 16"?
-
last year I used proper winter tyres on the golf for the first time, ,and I got a shock how good they are, and it's piece of mind now knowing for a couple of hundred quid I've made the effort, seems like a no brainer to me, plus for the price it's cheaper than my excess if I got it all wrong.
-
If you have to travel about in the winter months and the snow then change your tyres
-
Defo. makes driving much more of a pleasure in the crappy cold weather, once you've got your first set, it does offset the summer tyre wear so they last much longer too.
I can understand why people don't do it, it's an additional expense, but the difference is night and day on snow/ice - it's not just about being stuck, safety is a BIG plus to using them.
-
im same, live up some nice steep hills.
only down side is now I need 18" wheels as the capilers wont fit under 17"
-
I've got a spare set of wheels with Nokian WR-D3 winters on. Used them for the first time last year and it was like night and day difference between these and my ContiSportContact 2's on my Pescaras.
I live just off Ilkley Moor and have to use a lot of the Moor roads and when they're snowy its a proper pain in the arse! With the Nokians never had a problem! Plus even just when it was cold and wet the grip levels were 100 times better than the summer tyres.

On the cupra? You should be able to run 17s over them I did last summer. :happy2:

17s fit fine over 345mm brakes... had them on my old TDI...

I usually buy a diesel beater for the winter, as the weather where I live gets pretty hectic.
Park the nice car up, keeps the miles off it, maintenance need, tax, fuel costs etc down. Removes the chances of it being crashed in snow / ice too.
Diesel beater is then sold in Spring and the nice car comes out again.
Also means I can work on the nice car while it's tucked away in the garage with no pressure to have it ready for the drive to work in the morning. Any jobs can be done thoroughly and take all the time they need.

that's made life easier, I was told that they don't fit over

Did a Google search n everything :chicken:

Bit different to the uk, but when in Iceland a couple of years ago I had a rental hyundai i30 with winter tyres on and wad driving through 6 inches of snow with no problems at all. Grip was amazing and I couldn't believe the difference that winter tyres made.
If I knew for sure that we would have a bad winter then I would put winter tyres on my gti without a doubt. Long journey to work through country roads and hills. But we may have a winter like last year and it would be a waste!
-
Better to have them and not need them... I just leave them tucked up until the weather is right. It snows every year here in the mountains, so I personally wouldn't be without them.
-

I have R32 front brakes on 17'' Omanyts atm.
Not much space left available but with no spacers required.
Cheers

If i can pick something up cheap I think i might go for it, rather have them than not I suppose?
What sort of steel rim size should i be looking for? (got standard GTI brakes so would 15" and bigger be okay?)

16" is the minimum that will fit over standard brakes

Having experienced getting stuck on a large hill in winter with summer tyres a few years ago, I have a full set of winters on a set of Monza's.
I know you can drive with snow on the ground and get through, but its not just about snow!!! Its about low temperatures, ice & snow.
It is really night & day, confidence under braking. Well worth investment.
The price on the goodyear ultragrip is a steal!!!! :signLOL:

Just seen that, I was going to buy the last pair (having bought 1 pair) and they'd gone - never mind, I've got FAR too many tyres as it is. :rolleye: Nah, seriously far too many. :ashamed:

Doesn't matter what tyre I have on the car in the winter, never found the right tyre for my wheelchair to get to the car :driver:
-
You could use a sled

Or one of these
