Has anyone fitted genuine VW roof bars to their Mk5/6/7? I was wondering how secure they are as they only clamp-on unlike Mk4 roof bars which fit into the roof. My wife needs them permanently fitted to carry windsurf boards and I was wondering if they will be secure enough.
Also has anyone fitted a decent quality tailgate cycle rack? How do they fit with the plastic spoiler or can it be removed?
Cheers

Not tried surf boards but we carry upto four bikes on our vw roof racks and mainly long distances. We have had no problems as yet.
Cycle rack wise check out the Saris range, they by far the best I have used. They'll fit just about anything.

Next spring I'll be buying the VW roof bars and bike rack, the genuine ones are very secure from what I've seen

I've got Halfords roof bars and used them for bikes, boards etc... Never had any concerns with them, so imagine genuine ones would be even better. Actually, one concern about all clamp on bars is that no matter what locks they have on them, you always seem to be able to pull the clamps away from the roof.
I've fitted a Westfalia tow bar now, so that I can use a bike rack clamped to the ball.

I am thinking of going down that route would be handy for small trailers too, how secure are the bike racks fitted via that method and how do they fit on exactly?

Hi All,
What bike racks are the community using in 2018?
Desperately need one so that I can still use my boot and rear seats!
Thanks

Haven’t bought yet, but was looking a while back and the Saris Bones seemed best.

I use the Halfords aero bars (rebranded Thule) with Thule feet, + a pair of Thule 591 Proride carriers.
No complaints, even with the bikes being top heavy, it hasn't slowed me down in the corners  Just have to remember with any height restrictions you've got bikes up there
Worth also noting I saw a 5mpg hit carrying bikes up there. Mega drag!!

I would recommend the Saris Bones bike rack, I have the 3 bike version and is adjustable for various bike sizes.
