Afternoon guys,
Bought my 2007 black 3dr GTI a few weeks ago, and since then it seems to be problem after problem. Need a GTI forum Hug :P
As mentioned in my "new member" post, I was sold the car under the impression that the cambelt and waterpump had been done at 50k, turns out it hadn't. So had that done this week at a nice sum of £455 (had major service done as well). After a good look around the car, Mr mechanic also noticed that my rear o/s brake was binding, turning out to be a seized caliper. So now im having new calipers, discs and pads across the rear, another £280.
Last night I went to move the car on to the drive and the HID kit installed on it blew, due to moisture getting in to the boxes. Another £50!
I have also noticed an annoying rattling in the cockpit when the cars idling, since the cam and waterpump work was carried out. Going to ask the garage to amend this as it wasnt a problem before the work was carried out.
I know these are small things, but just bloody annoying when you've already spent £9300 on a car and just want to enjoy it!

Well without being too harsh , you should have checked re the belt/pump being done , never take anyones word for it . £9300 is that after what you have spent on the repairs ?

Sounds like you've had some serious bad luck! On the brightside atleast you know the work has now been carried out and hopefully there is no other issues! :happy2:

Well as far as I could tell when I went to view and buy it, the service book all looked legit and had been stamped and signed. Was only after I started calling up the garages that had apparently carried out the work, that I found that the cam/waterpump hadnt been done.
An nope, £9300 was what I paid for the car. Add the repairs on top. Very expensive MK5 Gti :(

Without sounding too harsh £9,300 is alot of money these days for a mk5 Gti!
2k more than i recently paid for my 1 owner minty 57 plate Gti with 68k miles :sick:

I'd have to echo that if it's a K03 :(
At the very least you'd hope that was a VW dealership price, in which case, if they said it had the Cam Belt and Pump done, get them to pay costs...
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the rest of your ownership. :happy2:

Yeah was a bit high but been searching for ages, wanted leather, steering wheel controls, FSH, 3dr, black and fairly low miles (58K), paint is immaculate and the alloys are perfect. So other than the things I've encountered, its literally a faultless car.

Sorry to hear you have had a bad start - I personally wouldn't have wanted a vehicle running HID lights regardless due to me disliking them and to be honest for the money I would have expected Xenons!
So maybe a blessing in disguise and you wont be blinding other drivers with your headlights.
Fingers crossed it is the end of your issues and you have some trouble free motoring ahead! Get some pics up so we can check out your ride!
My 08 Plate GTI with full recaro heated wingback leather, 1 owner, 3 door, highline + mfsw and 18inch monza 2's was £3750! Although (slightly) higher miles at 167k! :happy2:

Exactly same ase mine mate with full dealer history, unmarked 18" polished monza's with new michelin tyres plus zenons etc etc
Only money tho cant take it with you!

Bloody hell chap some bad luck so far, stick with it. £9300 sounds a lot. I paid 8k for my 57 plate 4 months ago with 31k miles at the time. Two previous owners. Little low on the options though. Has an armrest lol

I paid a grand more than that total for mine, though it was lower mileage and with a 12 month dealer warranty. I maybe did pay over the odds, but the car is exactly what I want, I intend to keep it for a long time and I love driving it.
I'm now going to try to walk away from this thread before anyone tells me I overspent ;-)

If you're having the rear calipers done anyway you could do the Caddy rear brake mod. Same rear discs and pads but the Caddy rear calipers have a bigger piston. If you decide to go for a BBK then it'll help with the brake balance.
If you want to keep it OEM, then my A3 2.0T calipers (same as the GTI but not painted red) are sitting at AKS Tuning from when I did the Caddy rear brake mod - I forgot to take them home with me. If they're still there you're welcome to have them. They had about 70k miles on them and they were in full working order when they were removed. All I ask in return is a donation to this forum at your discretion.

Wow, sounds like GTI prices have rocketed! I will sell my car for 10 grand if anyones interested!! :laugh:

:grin: il let mine go for 8k if anyone is interested, 57 plate, 1 owner, 69k miles, fully loaded with leather, nav and 18" monza's etc etc full dealer history, new brakes and michelin tyres all round immaculate throughout :driver:

I think mk5s have held their price well for the last year or so.
Probably because its a better car then the mk6 :innocent:

I bought mine at the perfect time (just over a year ago) could probably sell it for about what I paid if I hadn't modified it. I dont regret that though, these cars are transformed with a few tweaks. Hope the rest of your ownership is more pleasant. :happy2:

Sorted the issues with the HIDs, kit was short circuiting on some dodgy wiring from the previous owner. Luckily I have a sparky dad and he tidied everything up beautifully for me.
In regards to the brakes, turns out its not as bad as I initially thought. Only need a o/s caliper and pads both sides doing. £190 from local Vag dealer. Thank you for the offer of the A3 calipers, but id rather keep brakes standard at the moment :) :happy2: The car was only used on the weekends, so I hope that brake seizure was due to lack of use. Havent given it the full beans really yet as i dont want to do any further damage to the brakes, so going to enjoy hammering my foot in to the carpet when all is done :)
