Title: If my locking wheel nut has 15 splines
Post by: Stamanatic on December 01, 2014, 09:20:56 pm
If my locking wheel has 15 splines than will any vw locking wheel nut key from ebay with 15 splines unlock mine? It says ABC TYPE 4 on a key on ebay with 15 splines

That's correct. Get a type 4 off ebay, that will sort you out.
4 (with 15 peaks) - Key # 8D0 601 139 F 004 or new # WHT 003 319 A 004

So I got the key but it doesn't fit? Both are 15 spline, any ideas?

Looking at the pic of the nut, it look's like it sort of declines inwards? Where as the key is straight in?

You had the answer above, you need a key with 4 stamped on it. There are loads of variations that look the same.

Or go to a dealer and ask if they can use their master key to take off the locking bolts, then buy a new set

It does have 4 stamped on it

are you saying you bought a random key (nr 4) and it doesn't work?
Your bolts won't be set 4 then.

You could keep buying keys optimistically, or a VW dealer will probably move them for free if you're nice and take another set/non lockers with you.

15 splines is key no 4 as posted above, from the ABC type locking nuts, but they're not tapered, only a sight taper on the very end of the key.

I was forced to find this info as my local vw dealer was not helpful at all, they wouldn't even get their master set out to try, unless I agreed to buy a full set of locking nuts from them.

I have had four different sets of splined lockers on my recent cars, sure there are over 30 types?

My local VW were more than helpful, especially when two of their own ones snapped trying to get a bolt out

So really there is more than 1 type of 15 spline key? Only ever found info related to a 15spline was ABC 4

How does the appearance of the key compare to others on eBay? Is it noticeably tapered?

Mine has a spline type that isn't 4.

The wife's old Altea had a different spline pattern to my old Golf too, they used the same bolts as a Golf.

There are no other 15 splines actually on ebay! But looking at the pic of my nut it doew look to have a slight taper I think hard to tell.

Same key it looks anyway ABC004. The 2 pictures in my post are the key and the nut, might be just a crap cut key perhaps and needs to be forced in perhaps

Just changed over the wheels on the outlaws SEAT and they have type 2 spline.

Honestly, ring a local VW dealer and see if they'll be kind enough to remove your bolts. They did for me on a car with no history at that dealer and out of warranty.

Are they just a tight fit or do they not match up at all? Try spraying / cleaning the wheel bolts before trying the key. Don't get carried away though, you might not get the key out if you force it in there! Maybe contact the seller, see if they can send another?
