Hi guys,
I've been meaning to make a build thread for absolute ages but have never got round to doing one, but today's the day! :jumpmove: :rolleye:
As soon as I saw the first picture on the advert, I knew this car was the one I was going to buy
I got the car in July 2013, FSH, 55k miles, two previous owners, genuine 18" Monzas, RNS 510, cruise control, dual climate etc, so a reasonably well spec'd car!
Here is the car when I first got it home with my plate on:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs18.postimg.org%2F5famnrvwp%2FIMG_4202.jpg&hash=2c0d8725259af5480cc1ef9479746e67e1b63262)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs18.postimg.org%2Feocsxw4sp%2FIMG_4206.jpg&hash=b33a018eed2a383d06f6761d998435d2f2f96724)
It was pretty much standard, just with a few subtle mods. The previous owner had genuine edition 30 front and rear bumpers fitted, along with the side skirts and rear lights. I'm not a fan of the black plastic, so I was chuffed to find this had already been done! He had also fitted an RNS 510, chrome surrounds the climate controls, some nice GTI seat inserts; I'll upload interior photos tomorrow/later in the week.
I kept it standard until I turned 21 as insurance wasn't very appealing when I mentioned mods :signLOL: So all I done for the first year was got a sub and amp.
I turned 21 in September, so was able to get it lowered. After doing a fair bit of research, I decided to go with AP coilovers. The backs had the adjusters out and the fronts had about 20mm thread left, this is how it sat:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs29.postimg.org%2Fzdyj5symf%2FIMG_8934.jpg&hash=10ca8a502f25631d3f32f3e36eb7b1d233f74e20)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs29.postimg.org%2Fe1r184eo7%2FIMG_9056.jpg&hash=b0e6ca6f1cef520f4bb2b59f6224f43522a8d51d)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs29.postimg.org%2F8euoanc5j%2FIMG_9059.jpg&hash=9cae58ce8d4568b9f38dade42bad7d7be462742d)
It stayed on coilovers until roughly one week ago, when I came to my senses and got it put on bags! I got in touch with car audio security and got it booked in to have the Air Lift Performance kit with V2 management fitted, slam struts front and back, I wasn't messing around this time
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs24.postimg.org%2Fhu1rmdpt1%2FIMG_9727.jpg&hash=17f0de0bf2fe0f392a06e2def13ae8274b6e334f)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs24.postimg.org%2Fb655zs6at%2FIMG_9730.jpg&hash=e8a4dc3aa51a603d8e07b20ac0ccc37798f916ce)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs24.postimg.org%2Fweiuh7krp%2FIMG_9733.jpg&hash=8c05ccd498ed89576f1c53f11858e6595411e983)
As you can imagine, I was extremely happy with this decision as the outcome is absolutely perfect, I couldn't be happier! They also done an incredible job with the boot build which I'll include when I upload some interior photos later on.
Throughout the year and a half of owning the car, I also replaced the interior lighting with LEDs from DamoP (still need to finish doing the footwells lol), changed the number plate bulbs to LED, along with the reverse light. Also retrofitted highline clocks, full set of genuine MK6 chrome switches and a genuine US spec front grill which I then sprayed in plastidip to make it matte black to match my front badge. Again I'll put up photos of this all soon.
So as it stands, this is my car
I don't have an awful lot more I want to do with it. The list of future mods as of now looks like this:- Air intake - probably the P-Flow intake, but advice will be appreciated! I want lots of wooshy noises
- Xenons, probably the Depo ones, genuine ones seem hard work and pricey!
- MK6 MFSW
- ED30 Gear Knob
- Possible wiper delete
- Cat back exhaust, probably from EMP
Thanks a lot, hope you lot enjoy what you see! :P
-
Looks good George!
Brilliant start - Do you plan on changing the wheels at all? :happy2:
Looks like you have a brilliant car there, get the interior & boot build pics up! :happy2:
-
Thanks a lot!
If I'm completely honest, I actually really like the Monzas! But May/June i'll start thinking about getting some for the summer just to change it up a bit
I'll aim to get some later on providing it isn't dark when I get home :happy2:
-
I got a few quick interior shots earlier, starting with the genuine MK6 chrome switches/new door pull handles:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs29.postimg.org%2F4b6419son%2FIMG_9784.jpg&hash=119602fd4e2899d9a583be8db355c0d90d2bd123)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs29.postimg.org%2F95v7lt1mf%2FIMG_9785.jpg&hash=1301439fde114bdd8e05b27d05f683419f142598)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs29.postimg.org%2Fypxhs8n07%2FIMG_9786.jpg&hash=81b965621e04162e91af7b51b2855a444152e672)
The passenger side is also done, but didn't think it was necessary to show that. This little mod is really easy to do, with the exception of the fuel cap switch, that took maybe 20 minutes to do as it's rather fiddly!
Next up is my boot build. The sub box I got off ebay, there is/was a seller that made them, really nice fit! Caraudiosecurity then worked their magic and worked around that when fitting the air installation. The two go hand in hand, and in the dark the LED boot light really gives a good shine on the tank!
Then finally we have the cockpit! Cloth interior (love the tartan stitching!), RNS 510, highline clocks, chrome climate surrounds
I think that's pretty much it for the time being, don't think I've missed anything out!

This is a stunning example mate!! really liking the way this is going! will we be seeing you at the shows this year?

Thanks a lot! Yeah most likely, are you going to UD?
-
I've got one of those cheap ebay induction kits which I've extended to meet the foglight so it gets colder air (with an open foglight grille) and it sounds pretty mad, makes all sorts of turbo noises but they might be exaggerated because I have a K04.

Haha nice, do you have any videos of the sound? I already have open fog grills so that's one step completed
-
I don't but I'll try and make one tomorrow. From inside the car when you start getting onto boost you really hear the turbo, makes bov noises when coming off the throttle and the wastegate flutter sounds awesome. It's a lot louder outside the car too, when you're flooring it as the car is coming towards you it sounds like a tornado (lol)

Yes mate, i will be at UD. will have to come and take a look
-
How do you get a sub to work with your standard headunit??

Ok sweet, I'll get in touch if I can go! :happy2:
How do you get a sub to work with your standard headunit??
You need to use a LOC (Line Out Converter), I followed this guide: http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=163905
Make sure to get a good quality one though others it will just fail, I found this out the hard way. £3 from Halfords didn't quite cut it haha, had to spend I think £20 in the end but it's perfect!
-
Nice car man! Loving the subtle boot build.
-
Really poor video but you can kinda hear it here. I've got a non res milltek too and the sunroof was open so there's a few other noises going on.
It's actually a lot louder in real life, mic doesn't really pick up the sound properly.
-

I'm chuffed with the boot build, nice and simple and does the job! I have to be careful what I put in the boot though as the sub is vulnerable, I normally just use the back seats tbh haha

Something sounds amazing, not sure if it's your miltek or the intake! Is that the engone management light on? :scared:

You don't really hear the exhaust until you start getting properly on it. If you drive around normally changing gear at like 3k you'll hear boost building and you'll get a nice BOV sound as you change gear.
Have to admit the exhaust sounds more epic though!
Yeah the engine management light is on, currently having some issues with fueling which is proving to be a bit of a headache as I've now changed the HPFP for one with autotech internals, the fuel filter and the LPFP...
-
excellent mods George :happy2:
-
Wash, whatever it is that makes that noise at 1:07, that's exactly what I want! It's that air noise, I NEED THAT!
Thanks Maxitrol!
-
I got myself a set of Depo Projectors and a 5000K HID kit and fitted them today, looks way better!
They could do with a tiny bit of adjustment to make the fit slightly better, but that's a job for another day :signLOL:
PS, the bottom part of my grill is currently off the car as I'm fixing magnets to it to make my plate removable
-
They look smart :happy2:
-
Looking class man! Another member with air! I need to get my fronts lower! My front barley looks bagged :scared: The depo's looking good thinking of upgrading to them myself! hate the standard ones! :happy2:
-
Thanks a lot buddy! What kit do you have and is yours notched? My chassis actually touches the floor :signLOL:
Deffo do it, I should have done it ages a go! They look 10x better, and the light output with a HID kit is incredible :happy2:
-

Im running Air-ride system UKs set up at the moment, had it in my MK4 then when i sold that I kept the system and got new struts, It's not notched, I dont think its even going down that low to need a notch unless you need to do both sides?what fronts have you got? A set of deps have gone up for sale near me (Im in Ireland) and im expecting a bit of money in the next few days so I think ill buy them if there not gone in time
-
I have air lift slam series struts front and back
Oo fingers crossed then, you'll be glad you got them when you do!
-
Looking good..!!! Rarely see bagged oem but this is nice.. :congrats:
-

Thanks a lot! I actually really like the monzas haha
-
A few changes have been made, starting with the number plate. I stuck magnets on the rear of the lower grill, and some on the back of my shortened plate, really pleased with the outcome!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs16.postimg.org%2Fql114vsj5%2FIMG_0172.jpg&hash=c28c5bf210bfcbd71139e0fe44d405847fc1c102) (http://postimg.org/image/ql114vsj5/)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs16.postimg.org%2Fz20jfsx81%2FIMG_0173.jpg&hash=79f46ae0172abdb6a95089ae0b8fab86aaeede85) (http://postimg.org/image/z20jfsx81/)
I also had a custom exhaust made up by the guys at EMP, I asked for something subtle, nothing stupid loud, and they done a great job. They managed to get the tail pipes to be really close to OEM too, they're slightly wider but looks perfect!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs16.postimg.org%2F4yr2kz0a9%2FIMG_0153.jpg&hash=1f07ee99ec9cef84f304ca863a6aa793edfe8f26) (http://postimg.org/image/4yr2kz0a9/)
Finally, the most important change of all, I got myself some new wheels! I have been looking around for a few months to see what's on offer second hand, but there was nothing really on offer other than poorly looked after reps.. no thanks
In the end I went back to Caraudiosecurity and they sorted me out with a set of the new style Rotiform BLQs. They're 18", 8.5j et45 all round.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs16.postimg.org%2Fhfxq84vg5%2Fdgdfg.jpg&hash=37fdcc2b4d47d4fea886ec5b4024a7bf889db5f2)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs16.postimg.org%2Fi46kr2u5x%2FUntitled_1.jpg&hash=f43f7d01e6609a263b18f5bd652486a3d0e54a3e)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs16.postimg.org%2Fiw98q9yd1%2Fgdfgdfg.jpg&hash=81eaa055cb0182eb7acb2b5d1f24aa361ea28cfe)
Needless to say, I am over the moon with the outcome, and the service from the guys at Caraudiosecurity is spot on; flawless!
-
So you fitted the lights in the end.... :happy2: did u do it yourself..?!
Great progress..!!! Pretty much looks spot on now
Engine mods next..?!
-
Yeah, well me and my Dad done them together, didn't take too long
Thanks a lot, this is how it will remain now, I'm considering removing the rear wiper and getting a glass grommet though!
I've been tempted by a Forge Twintake for quite some time now, so that could well be the next thing to happen if one comes up second hand!
-
 Should be flagged as pornographic material!
-
Hahahaha thanks man :signLOL:
-
Damn that's one nice looking MK5! Rotiform make the perfect wheels, prefer the LHR's myself, but they're not much different.
If you're going to blank the rear wiper, check these out: http://euroimagetuning.myshopify.com/ I bought a black one for mine and they're spot-on! Bolt style works so much better than anything else.
Much better than halfords gommets or the ones on ebay that need polyseal or w/e it is. The sealant degraded so quickly when I used one on my old MK4.
-
Thanks a lot! Yeah the LHR's are beautiful, but they're also about 3 times the price as they're splits :signLOL:
I'm going to go with the one from https://www.gecleant.de/shop/glasstopfen.html (https://www.gecleant.de/shop/glasstopfen.html) as it sits flush with the glass and has had loads of good feedback on this forum, it does however require sealant but no one has said anything bad about it from what I've read, they supply their own. Thanks for the advice though!
-
Haha, didn't know that! I may have to look into getting some BLQ's instead of LHR's for mine then :p
Ah, yeah I've heard good things about the gecleant one. I was going to get it before I found the other one. Rear wiper delete is one of the best mods imo.
-
 I love those wheels. The car really is sitting pretty
-
Very nice boot build and coilovers ,what amp and sub wattage are you using.
-
did u have much arch work done on the front?
-
Been in California for the summer so havnt been on this till now... A lot of catching up to do, The new wheels really look the business!
I ended up getting the Depo projectors myself in the end and im very happy with them! Did you flush the front grill youself? and did you wrap the grill matt black?? I want to wrap mine matt black... but im not to sure how it would look on the grey car...:/ Also, police are starting to clamp down on no number plate in Ireland... Do you have any picture of the way you set your up on the lower grill?? Sorry about all the questions :signLOL:
Seen this has really made me want to get the finger out and get back to my car! Just done Uni on the job hunt now so hopefully I pick something up soon so I can kick on with my car!
-

Thanks for the kind words! I'm really happy with the wheels, I spent quite a bit of time deciding which ones to go for, but defiantly made the right decision!
Very nice boot build and coilovers ,what amp and sub wattage are you using.
Thanks! The amp is 2,400W, can't remember the sub though!
did u have much arch work done on the front?
The front arches have been rolled to 45 degrees and been pulled a few mm, so nothing major. I would love a set of wide wings to drive super low though :rolleye:

Welcome back! The Depos are great aren't they!
I purchased a genuine US spec grill and then plastidipped it to make it matt black. Really easy and it's held up amazing, no chips at all! I've seen a greyu golf with it matt black, it looks great!
Earlier on the thread I have photos showing how the magnets on my number plate work. Haha get to work!
-
:congrats: looking good buddy
-
I went up to the Vagroots event at the Ace Cafe on Sunday, wasn't expecting to get a space inside but one of the marshals saw me park up outside and told me they would make a space for me to get inside, so I was over the moon with that! A few photos were taken too! (Take note of watermark for the photographer)

nice ride :driver: :happy2:
i was looking to buy air for mk5 but i still went for ah exclusive coil :D bags are expensive :D
-
Thanks for the kind words!
It's expensive, but extremely convenient! In my opinion it's worth every penny, but it depends on how low you want your car, and whether you mind it scraping on every speed bump or not
-
Stunning car dude :happy2:
-
I've treated myself quite a bit recently, I went back to EMP and had a 3" decat downpipe fitted, so it's now running a full 3" turbo back exhaust which sounds incredible! I have also just had the Revo air intake fitted, which again really sounds good!
On Tuesday it goes to R-Tech Performance for a Stage 2 remap, looking at 270+ bhp!
-
If you don't mind me asking, how much did the front lights set you back in all? Looks so much smarter.
-
very nice looking car you have built ,credit to you :notworthy:
-

£200 delivered, they are the Depo projectors and I highly recommend them!
-
very nice looking car you have built ,credit to you :notworthy:
Thank you very much, I'm glad you're liking it! :happy2:
-
The remap has now been done, it came out at 258.7bhp with 298lb/rpm, not quite the 270+ but I was being optimistic
Safe to say it drives amazingly and it's got 5 changeable settings, 1 being the lowest power to 5 being the highest; not quite sure why you would want to use 1-4 though eh? :stupid: :signLOL:
I am considering getting the forge short shifter next, if anyone can say anything about these please speak up!
-
Hi George, please correct me if I'm wrong, you've got the turbo back exhaust and intake fitted? Have you changed the intercooler, I'm surprised at stage 2 you only got 258hp? It seems a little low.
-
That is correct. Before the map it read 212bhp.
No I havn't changed the intercooler.
-
very nice motor mate ,blq is such a nice wheel for the mk5
