Hi everyone, I'm Rog :happy2:
I've had a few VAG group cars now and love them.(A3 TFSIQ, S4 B6, Octavia II VRS, Corrado, Audi 80 Cab) I've turned around some unloved cars too. Just with some time and effort, some detailing knowledge and minimal amount of money.
This was my previous car (project) and 24hrs after selling the A3 3.2 VR6, which went from this:

I've got myself another performance icon. This time it's a car I have always wanted and admired, the Mk5 Golf Gti.
This is a car that is great mechanically, but lacking a little in the looks dept. It has Full VWSH and has some nice specs, auto lights and auto dimming rear view mirror, being some. The overall condition is good, it just needs sharpening up.
It needs some love and attention to take the car back in time and restore it's condition. And I Iove the challenge of turning these neglected cars around.
I will show the progress of the build throughout and upload many, many, many pics as I go.
My plans are to:
Replace the DV, cam follower. Done
Clean up and detail the interior and exterior. Done
Remove any dents.
Replace the tired interior handles and update the switches. Done
Replace damaged radio HU Done
Fit 18" Monzas Done
Fix coolant leak Done
Refurb the brakes and calipers
Replace creaking top mountsDone
Replace Tyres
Retrofit any upgrades as and when.
Upgrades so far...

So to start the ball rolling, I began with the engine bay, as there were some bits missing and it needed a little attention.
So off with the cover.

Impressive stuff, I should really do this to my car as the paintwork is terrible and I don't think any of the 'nooks & crannies' or door shuts have ever been cleaned :sad1:
Keep up the good work, car is looking loads better :happy2:

Yeah, to de-grease the engine bay, run the engine, APC cleaner, agitate with a detailing (like) brush and PW off. Carefully not over wetting any electrical areas. Wipe down with MF cloth and dress with a Plastic/rubber dressing if desired, job done :happy2:
It's funny you should call me Rob, as that's my twin brothers name (true fact)

Update Time
It's not often I get enough spare time to polish my own car(s), as I'm always polishing someone elses
But, I had some time owing at work and decided I would use, probably the best weather day this week, to give my GTI a half decent Enhancement polish.
My main aim today was to properly cleanse, enrich, remove or reduce the heavy defects and bring clarity to the awesome Diamond Black Magic finish.
The polish of choice was Menzerna IP 2200 and a Lake Country orange cutting pad. This combo did a great job of removing the swirls.
Plus knocking back some of the horrendous deep scratches inflicted by a drying blade at the £10 wash and go....GGRRR! Don't use them people, they will ruin your car!
Some defects I left as they were too deep but I acheived the finish I could live with.
The finish was sealed and protected with Wolfs Chemicals Hard Body and topped up with Gtechniq C2v3.
I didn't quite finish all the final touches as I run out of time, but the enhancement certainly has removed the years of neglect and is looking many years younger
I'll let the pics do the rest of the talking :happy2:

Ooo a bit far from me buddy or i would come down and get some tips on how to get a good shine
Youve done a amazing job with your car bud
-
Just getting better and better mate :happy2:
Keep it up and I'm sure in a few years this will be an epic build thread. :congrats:
-
Nice job with the clean, looks great! :happy2:
-
When you polished it did you use the one single polish and go over the entire car or did you go across a range of polishes from lighter to coarser abrasive qualities? Looks great! That 50:50 split really shows the difference!!
-
Wow what a transformation, great work :happy2:
-
OMG! It looks a million times better now.
:congrats: This takes talent.

Thanks for the great comments :happy2:
Yes Luke, I used menzerna IP 2200 as a single stage polish, using long passes, so the abrasives cut effectively intitially, then gradually break down to leave a very glossy finish. I did multiple passes on the heavily damaged panels (which was most of the car to be honest!).
If I had more time, I could have followed up with Menzerna Final Finish to refine. It does help using a rotary polisher too, as it removes the defects a lot quicker than a standard DA, but you have to know what you're doing.
I am pleased with the finish Though. I have left plenty of clearcoat to give it another refining polish when its required. It is hard to beat Menzerna polishes for hard paints like the VAG group tend to have. Makes the job a lot easier. I have tried others (scholls concepts and wolfs chemicals) but I always come back to Menzerna
Sorry if that comes across a bit nerdy

When you polished it did you use the one single polish and go over the entire car or did you go across a range of polishes from lighter to coarser abrasive qualities? Looks great! That 50:50 split really shows the difference!!

Absolutely not! I'd be just like yourself. Summer detail is coming up and it's good to get other people's info.
I have chemic guys V40, V60 and V80 so I'll probably do all 3 again.
-
Chemical Guys stuff is good
If you have already detailed your car using all 3 polishing stages, I personally would only do the refining stages to refinish. Remember, unless you are measuring the paint depth with a PDG you maybe removing too much clearcoat, and you don't want that!
It sounds like you have a good regime anyway, so is unlikely you will need to fully correct the paint again :happy2:

Nice progress thread, keep up the good work! You'd never know its 10 years old.

*update*
I managed complete a few more jobs on the GTI
First up, I gave the interior a good going over. This is the first interior clean since buying the car, so it had all previous owners dirt and crap in it
The process: Thorough vacuum, APC'd the plastics, shampoo'd all seats, carpets and headlining with Chemical Guys Fabric Clean. Then plastics were dressed with Gtechniq Matt Dash.

The RCD head unit in my car has a damaged LCD screen, so I have bought an updated version to replace it with. It was great value from a fellow forum member, so thankyou :happy2:
I will be adding a centre armrest and Ipod dock soon, this is perfect for my needs and looks nicer with the silver buttons.

In fairness, it's the first time removing the fascia, so I was guessing a little! I just lifted the top half up a bit and unscrewed the front panel and pulled it off, worked well. The previous owners weren't so careful as they had scratched and marked the panels :fighting:
You don't hang about do you? This is progressing nicely good work.
Thanks dazza, I've had a bit of practice on previous tfsi based cars, which helps with some of the jobs. I must say, I am enjoying modding and changing parts on the car. It's all adding up to a nicer car to own and drive :driver:

Looking great bud, I love these sort of threads, not just chucking a map, intake and exhaust on but going through the car and getting all back up to standard, looks a lot better on the 18' Monza's :happy2:

I have installed the rev D, on previous cars, which had been fine. But after doing some research the Rev G is supposed to be better, we'll see
The old DV was bad wasn't it! How the previous owners didn't notice is beyond me! :stupid:
I was quite happy to find it that knackered, as it meant there was more power to be had from the engine
CG Fabric Clean is great stuff too, it can be diluted 10:1 and will last you ages. I had my last bottle for 3 years+ :happy2:

Nice, wish my DV had been in your state opposed to the brand new rev g that I found in there :fighting: previous owner had fitted it and not told me. I had already bought a new one because I assumed it would be knackered as it's a ten year old car and no paperwork suggesting new one had been fitted... But the cars looking good rog!

Where did you get the Rev G from? Mines 10 year old DSG and thinking I should buy one just incase the previous owner has not changed it. Also is there s guide or something to help me out with the changing?

@MarkyN (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11570) I recently did mine. I got mine from local VW dealer
As for a guide I'll tell you how I did mine
-Remove wheel
-Remove the front half of the black plastic arch lining by undoing the torx screws - there's quite a few to undo.
-Locate DV - its good to use a torch here. Some recommend taping a torch in the direction of the DV so you have hands free.
-First off, remove the electrical connection to the DV (you do this using the same method for removing any other electrical connection in the car. I use a small flathead to prise back the catch)
-Undo the three bolts holding in the DV. These bolts are hex bolts. Although it could technically be done with a simple hex key, it would be very fidly. I used a small ratchet spanner with an extension to make it a lot easier.
-Take out the DV and replace, then just do the reverse of the above procedure for fitting.
Some recommend using threadlock on the bolts when putting them back. I didn't.
If you do a search on the forum for DV/Diverter Valve you'll get other guides people have done that you can use this in conjunction with. Some have pictures which is very usefull.
-
Nice one mate. I think when I service it next month I'll make sure I change that part as well as the cam follower too

@Peskyjones (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11854) that's spot on mate! Very useful! I'll make sure I follow as you said, seems pretty simple job. Thanks again

Where did you get the Rev G from? Mines 10 year old DSG and thinking I should buy one just incase the previous owner has not changed it. Also is there s guide or something to help me out with the changing?
I got mine from TPS, same price as Awesome Gti. Check if there's one local to you, they had them in stock in Milton Keynes, it maybe the same for other areas.
I pretty much followed the same guide as Peskyjones (cheers mate :happy2:), although, I didn't bother removing the arch liner, access was a little tight but easy enough. As said, search the forum there's loads of information on this.
I'd be surprised if the original DV was still intact after 10 years, mine certainly weren't, so definitely worth checking. Although it may have been changed previously, you won't know until you remove it . Like me you'll be hoping it is knackered, as it means more power to be restored
:happy2:

Awesome! I just read the whole thread, learned some new things along the way.
I get my GTi this weekend (hopefully) - it's also black but a 5 door...
If I can get it looking half as good I will be happy :happy2:
Also, did you notice any difference in the ride from the 17's to the 18's?
To be honest back in 2008/9 I had a 3 door GTi with the 18's but can't remember! :rolleye:

Thanks man :drinking:
The ride on the 17's was nice and smooth, less crashy over bumps etc. The 18's are noisier on the road, but that could be down to the tyres. I feel the road better on the 18's and they look the business, which helps

A few updates...
My original mats were very worn and one was missing. So was on the look out for some cheap original mats on eBay. When I managed to bag some rare Edition 30 car mats for the GTI. For a princely sum of £26 + packaging (£34) ! Bargain, normally around £120 new!
They were in good condition, but needed a good clean up.

The next issue to sort out is my annoying coolant leak. Only filled this up a couple of days ago! After some research (on here :happy2:), I found it out to be another common issue with the TFSI engine.

This is the area in question. Water leaking out and sitting on the gearbox housing. It is coming from a pipe connector union on the side of the cylinder head. An O-ring perishes and starts to leak.

First off, I pulled the coolant temp sensor out and drained the coolant. Then after a massive amount of faffing to pry off most of the hose pipes, I decided just to loosen the connector and not remove it completely with some of the hoses still attached. And replace the O-ring only, good decision, me thinks! :happy2:

There you go - http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,87824.msg893078.html#msg893078

It was a lovely sunny day today, so I thought I would give the GTI a quick once over....rude not to really
Quite literally, all I did was a 2BM (2 Bucket Method) wash and dryed with a big drying towel, dressed the tyres and that's it!
The Wolf's Chemicals Hard Body Nano Ceramic Sealant, I applied in April this year, still looking amazing :happy2:
Whilst I was there, I re-aligned the front nearside headlight, as it was knocking the front bumper shut line out at the side. This was annoying me badly :fighting:
I also re-finished and polished the headlights again, as I rushed them a little the first time round...
Anyway, it came out alright I reckon, here are some pics 8)

Cheers mate it's getting there
I got the steering wheel trims off the for sale forum on here for £10, then I realised they the same as the ones I took off, but stripped of the "rubber paint". You maybe better off removing the finish and replacing your original trims, still looks the part IMO.

Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a go.

I haven't done much to the Golf lately, until now, that is
First little update. Install the new Hazard switch.

The next update, is slightly better and bigger
I managed to bag, for a great price, an upgrade part for the Golf.......large parcel arrived yesterday.

All unwrapped! An edition 30 rear valance already in Diamond Black Magic paint code!
Been searching for ages and this popped up on eBay.

It has a bit of surface damage, which should machine polish out ok. looks rough here though!

Ok, onto the install. This isn't exactly a guide, but it may help someone?
The standard GTI valance, looks ok but I prefer a colour coded valance.
I needed to remove the whole rear bumper to be able to separate the bottom half and replace with the Ed 30 Valance.
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/620/21056907168_f2d997860f_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/y5J9TA)P1050043 (https://flic.kr/p/y5J9TA) by Roger Freeman (https://www.flickr.com/photos/130194481@N02/), on Flickr
First I removed the screws in the wheel arches.
(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5733/21056902888_6eba9d19d2_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/y5J8BN)P1050044 (https://flic.kr/p/y5J8BN) by Roger Freeman (https://www.flickr.com/photos/130194481@N02/), on Flickr
Then I removed 4 screws from under the edge of the valance.
Followed by removing the rear lights, this is to gain access to the next 4 screws holding the rear panel on the car body.

Lights removed, to remove these bolts. Quite filthy behind there isn't it!

And after a bit of faffing with a couple of reluctant screws, it was off!
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/619/21056881268_6de40f56bf_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/y5J2c3)P1050049 (https://flic.kr/p/y5J2c3) by Roger Freeman (https://www.flickr.com/photos/130194481@N02/), on Flickr
I gave the area a good clean, not perfect but better
(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5835/21056876738_6202d6e470_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/y5HZQW)P1050050 (https://flic.kr/p/y5HZQW) by Roger Freeman (https://www.flickr.com/photos/130194481@N02/), on Flickr
The old valance was pulled off carefully, not to damage any lugs.
The Ed 30 valance was then pushed back onto the rear panel, and being a genuine part, it fitted perfectly! It was then fitted back on to the car.
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/717/20622090514_55e530609e_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/xqiB3J)P1050052 (https://flic.kr/p/xqiB3J) by Roger Freeman (https://www.flickr.com/photos/130194481@N02/), on Flickr
I hand polished the Valance with Scholls Concepts S3 polish to knock back the scratches and painted out the worst of the deeper scratches.
I will follow up with a machine polish.

Loving the look of the car, but I will continue to find parts to improve the car, so the next will be the Ed 30 front splitter.....watch this space.
Thanks for taking the time to look.

Looks great with the ED30 splitter. Sideskirts need painting badly though .

Looks well.
My only gripe is the positioning of your number plate!

I had noticed, but that's where the previous owner had screwed in the plate :fighting: :stupid:
That will addressed when I get some new plates and surrounds.

Looks great Rog! I fitted the Ed30 bumper on mine a few months back too. Couldn't wait to get rid of the standard bumper.

It is amazing how much better it looks, makes the car look more premium in my eyes
I'll keep the standard valance just incase, this one gets damaged.
I've also managed to find a towing eye cover, in black too, so I'll be fitting that to finish it off nicely

Ed30 valance looks great!
I got the tow eye cover from VW for about £18, it just needed to be painted.
I'll get the part number later for you.

I'll get the part number later for you.

Looks great Rog! I fitted the Ed30 bumper on mine a few months back too. Couldn't wait to get rid of the standard bumper.
Cheers Jay, you should put some pics up of yours :happy2:
It is amazing how much better it looks, makes the car look more premium in my eyes
I'll keep the standard valance just incase, this one gets damaged.
I've also managed to find a towing eye cover, in black too, so I'll be fitting that to finish it off nicely
It certainly does mate. I have some pics in my progress thread if you fancy a butchers. Will be adding some more updates soon! http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,97064.msg961372.html#msg961372 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,97064.msg961372.html#msg961372)
Nice one Jay. I've checked your thread out, looks cracking man :happy2:

Thanks for that Rossimac!
I did get one from eBay already painted, turned out he sent the wrong part number :stupid:
I was trying to get away with not painting it, but I suppose I'll have to now haha
Cheers for the part number :happy2:

Outstanding work!

Outstanding work!
Thanks Ash, :happy2: I'm chipping away at it
Little update
A few more improvements made.
First really simple and popular add-on, £3 from eBay, an Ignition barrel surround. I chose aluminum to match the interior.

Then the next little fix, was to replace the indicator lens. As you can see, it's seen better days

Here's a little "guide" for anyone who needs it.
Firstly, remove the cap. Gently pull outwards from bottom and it will start to come away, be carefull not to snap anything!

Then the mirror, I used a small screwdriver to ease it off from the inside, very easy.

Then your're left with the motor. Then remove the 3 screws around the outside to remove the motor. to gain access to the rest of the screws, you need to remove.

Took me less than 15 mins, not bad considering I have'nt done one of these before!
Next up the Tailgate latch :happy2:
-
Next job....replace the WW (white wormed) tailgate latch..
Again, not teaching people to suck eggs, but hopefully my little "How to" might help or inspire someone to do theirs'
Obviously a common sight on most early Mk5 Golfs :fighting:

This is the replacement, from a 2008 Golf. £20 off Ebay again! It has a 3D logo but not the soft closing action. But I'm not too bothered by that.
I've already given it a good clean and polished the chrome with Britmax Easy Cut.
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/596/21288613483_b16e679b6f_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/yrcH74)P1050188 (https://flic.kr/p/yrcH74) by Roger Freeman (https://www.flickr.com/photos/130194481@N02/), on Flickr
To fit the replacement I need to remove the tailgate plastic panel. This is always a worrying time as it is usual to break a few clips!
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/572/21883571886_7288daf0d0_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/zkM2vy)P1050192 (https://flic.kr/p/zkM2vy) by Roger Freeman (https://www.flickr.com/photos/130194481@N02/), on Flickr
First, you need to remove 2 screws from inside the grab handles.
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/618/21897746962_08e4b3b92a_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/zn2Fgq)P1050193 (https://flic.kr/p/zn2Fgq) by Roger Freeman (https://www.flickr.com/photos/130194481@N02/), on Flickr
Then I masked up the edges of the tailgate, to get a screwdriver in between the plastic, to help pull the panel off. So after some grazed knuckles and alot of pulling, swearing and more pulling, it came off....and without breaking any clips... woohoo!! :jumpmove:
(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5692/21883571036_1bc4dc8122_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/zkM2fU)P1050194 (https://flic.kr/p/zkM2fU) by Roger Freeman (https://www.flickr.com/photos/130194481@N02/), on Flickr
Then it's on to removing the old latch.

Disconnect the cable (remembering not to close the tailgate as you can't open it again from the outside!)
(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5723/21721659980_c2296b0314_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/z6tbJY)P1050196 (https://flic.kr/p/z6tbJY) by Roger Freeman (https://www.flickr.com/photos/130194481@N02/), on Flickr
To gain access to all the screws I needed to remove/move the wiper motor. This became hard, as it would not budge!!

So, I just removed the wiper motor bolts (10MM) and pulled it down a little to gain access..

It's come leaps and bounds mate! Lovely job
I might be replacing my boot handle today but thinking about removing the chrome bit and painting inlay part of it to match my car and stick the chrome back on!

Thanks for posting up all the work you have carried out, I've got to do many of these my self and you've broken them down in nice bite size chunks.. Especially doing both front and rear light lenses..

Thanks Mike, it's my pleasure mate! I really enjoy doing the thread
I've learnt so much from similar posts like this over the years. I feel I'm doing my bit to help or inspire people do these jobs....which the dealers would charge a small fortune for doing. When all it takes a bit of knowledge and a few basic tools.
I've also made a great record of the progress that I can look back upon, in the years to come and reminisce

Brilliant transformation! Didn't think much to the black GTI's but this has converted me. Small touches definitely make the biggest differences!

I'd love to give a machine polisher a go, always been a bit apprehensive I guess.. Now I've just got my black gti its defo entering my mind again. And seeing your results, if I can get mine looking 50% as good it'd be a great improvement! Did you follow a guide on the lenses? I guess you used wet and dry paper on the 800 and 2000 grits before you buffed them up? Are you going to buff up your exhaust tips? One of mine looks like yours did with the sun blistering sort of damage on it.. You did an amazing job on yours though.. Look brand new now!!!! :happy2:

As you probably know, black cars are a lot harder to keep. They will always keep you busy cleaning and detailing mate, I've had four black cars now and they have all needed major paint correcting....but they look immense when detailed and polished 8)
Machine polishing (with a DA polisher) isn't too bad, you just need all the right products to begin with. Then you need to ideally get a professional to show how to use it! If you can't get that you can pick it up from YouTube. Practice on an old panel to begin with to get the desired results. Although you would have to go mental to damage the paint with a DA! Never say never though
Go over to Detailing world for loads of info on what products you need and loads of video how to demos to guide you.
I did a 3 day course a few years ago, one to one with top (ex swissvax instructor) Detailer, Tony Spears. (Look him up ) cost me a bit. But, I learnt how to use a Rotary polisher properly and how to detail a car without all the marketing bullsh*t!.
To do the headlights, yeah I used wet and dry, going in opposite directions for each grade of paper, low to high grade, then buffed the sanding marks out, with the a rotary polisher. They look better but really need replacing as they're still not 100%..
There is a great how to guide by AMMO NYC on YouTube, which is what I went by.
The exhaust tips, I polish with Autosol and wire wool, then follow up with Britmax Twins metal polish, every time I detail the car. The tips are quite old and tired, so are nearly impossible to get perfect. They certainly look better than when I first picked the golf up

Yeah a DA polisher is probably what I'm looking at.. something like a DAS-6 Pro.. I had a good read of Jay's guide on here.. http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,74892.0.html So maybe looking at a mix of CG Hex pads and Menzerna products.. But I will definitely have a look over at Detailing World and see what other recommendations are there.. I have a car breakers right near me so I can get car panels for pennies to practise on.. (which i definitely intend on doing before the Gti!)
From what I've read about DA and Rotary polishers there is definitely a high level of expertise to master the art of the rotary.. Think I'll leave that to the pros like you
I'll give the lights a go for sure.. and as you said, even if they aren't perfect i guess it'll do until a cheap set pop up on here or on the bay..
Autosol and wire wool was exactly my plan so thats good.. Did you seal them afterwards? or is there no need?
I'll defo put together a progress thread once I get started on mine, ordered a few bits online so hoping to get going later this week..
Whats next on yours??
Mike

Good work as always Rog.

You could go for a forced drive dual action polisher. I have a das 6 and will be upgrading to a FLEX XC 3401 VRG Positive Drive Orbital Polisher soon. As a newbie don't trust my self with a rotary polisher.

I have been looking into this also and when I saw how good rogs work was I dropped him a message about which DA polisher might be good to start with, pretty sure that's the one he suggested
I'm going to grab one next month and have a go at my mums car, if that no good, then my sisters, basically anyone's but mine until I get half decent at it

The Das-6 Pro is an ideal polisher to start with, you'll get some great results with the right polish and pad combo's..
Jay's guide is excellent, very comprehensive and detailed indeed, that should help you get going. :happy2:
I highly recommend Menzerna products, They are simply the best IMO.(especially on VAG's hard paintwork) There are many types, I mainly use IP 2200/2400 and FF4000. These get great results without ripping all the clearcoat off your car :scared:
I would say, keep it simple and basic to start and as your knowledge and confidence grows, start adding more to your product list. It's a slippery slope, I can tell you. Before you know it you'll be detailing other peoples cars on weekends, like I did for 4 years
For the exhausts tips, as well as Autosol, I use the Britemax Twins Kit, Easy cut to clean and polish and Final Shine to seal.
Link here: http://www.shopnshine.co.uk/britemax-metal-twins-kit?gclid=CJ_X49Peq8gCFeoBwwodbNYLvQ (http://www.shopnshine.co.uk/britemax-metal-twins-kit?gclid=CJ_X49Peq8gCFeoBwwodbNYLvQ)
Definitely get a progress thread going, it would be great to see how you get on :happy2:
The next things on my list, is Ed30 front lip or whole bumper, as mine is slightly damaged (not that bad).
Get my dent man out to take out the many small dings around the car.
After that I don't know....remap

I'm going to grab one next month and have a go at my mums car, if that no good, then my sisters, basically anyone's but mine until I get half decent at it
aha Definitely doing the same as you Ryan... Trial session on mums MG first just in case.. :scared:
HaHa.....Yep, practicing on/ruining someone elses car is one way to go :signLOL:
-
Safety first! Always wanted to learn to do it will be a valuable skill. Thanks for the inspiration Rog!
No problem Ryan :drinking:
I'm glad I invested the time, money and energy into doing stuff myself....it pays for itself in the long run
-
I agree with keeping it simple for sure.. Just gotta keep my expectations realistic, and know the more times your practise the better I'll get.. Might order the polisher tomorrow with a few other goodies... It won't need a deep cut.. but as you know with black cars just needs a good freshen up.. Is it difficult going around handles, indicators and other bits that stick out on the car??
That Britemax kit looks good.. Will defo look into that thanks, i like the fact it will protect it after cleaning..see if i can find a deal somewhere..The whole car just needs TLC and attention to details that the previous owner didn't..
The ED30 front lip, can you get them direct from a dealer? They do look a lot better than stock for sure.. You've gone with the 18" diamond cut monzas on your too, they look sweet..
Getting a remap is like having that ace card up your sleeve.. knowing you can always make the car a hell of a lot quicker for relatively small investment is brilliant..

Great work and almost a carbon copy of mine! Ive done loads of think same things as you have, but wish I had documented it with more photos now. What polish did you use or your rear lights?

I used Menzerna Final Finish 4000, with the rotary polisher.

Really Great work!

Cheers Jay, I know it's like a drug....just need a (to) fix
Right...next little add-on, is to change the chrome GTI grill badge to a red GTI badge! I prefer the red and black look, (I did this for my 25th anniversary golf too.)
So one evening I got to it. I removed the grill and pushed the standard grill badge out from the back.

I managed to get a genuine MK6/7 red GTI emblem off ebay for a tenner, (normally £25+) but I hadn't realised the fixings aren't the same as the MK5, so after a think! I used a hairdryer to heat the adhesive and remove the letters on both emblems from the backing and swap them over, ingenius! Worked a treat and you would never know!

The next little "project", is to fit the missing towing eye on the Ed30 bumper.

I had to go to the stealers to get it, as they are like hens teeth to find anywhere. As you can see it needs colour coding to the car.

First thing was to give the towing eye a good rubbing down.

Then I gave it a light coat of primer. I used a hairdryer to dry between coats.
I then rubbed it down again with 2000 grit, remove any ripples and lumps.

Thanks for the heads up, regarding the front lip :happy2:
The previous owner put the tints in, I was thinking of removing them as they make my son travel sick  as it feels bit suppressive in the back!
I was pulled over by the police months ago and was told to remove the front tints as they were way too dark... I wasn't bothered as I didn't like them anyway

Hi Rog, quick question, did you replace the exhaust on your GTI or polish it up?
I've just picked up an 05 DSG in red and whilst in good condition for it's age does need some love like you have given yours.
Thanks

I have tried polishing mine up, ive spent hours on it but can't get it properly shiny. It also looks like some bits have corroded so badly there is section loss.
I use a brillo pad type thing, some wire wool and autosol. If Rog/ anyone can run through their procedure and how long it took them that'd be great
-
Quickest way to sort the exhaust is to get some new tips (If you look at my project thread I just fitted some to mine)
-
Yeah I saw that, I think rog also comented in the thread.
Where did you get them from?

Where did you get them from?
Just search Audi A4/B8 Exhaust trims. As long as they are 75mm in diameter they will squeeze over the original.

Saw some on amazon but it actually lists them as 7.3cm which I take is close enough? I also read some reviews of spot rusting on them, I might leave it a while and see what happens to yours :innocent:

Polishing up the exhaust tips, can take quite some time. Mine took repeat polishing to get them to look ok, they certainly aren't perfect.
The way I did mine, the initial time:- using Autosol and a fine grade wirewool (from halfrauds), I gave them a good scrub, using front to back strokes. Then with the Britemax Twins metal polish, repeated with the wire wool, then the same again with a microfibre towel. Then buff to a shine and seal to help protect them.
Any major carbon build up, around the tip edges, I carefully scraped off with a flat head screwdriver. Then I repeated the process, until I was happy as I could be with the finish.
There are many different products on the market, to help get the desired results. Normally, all it takes is a little knowledge, time and effort :happy2:
The A4 tips Jay used over the top sound like a cool solution, I will check them out and see. Although my look good enough for me at the moment

Hey matey car is coming along really well looks very fresh and the monzas really set it off. Thinking about changing my vacuum pump as it weeps, was it an easy job to do and you wouldnt have the new part number handy would you. Cheers

Thanks Washout
Changing the vacuum pump, wasn't too bad to do. The only tips I would give, is not to over tighten the bolts and make sure the plastic bracket that holds a loom, goes back the right side of the bottom bolt! If you don't it will leak all over again, like mine did! :fighting:
I don't have the part number, but this is the part I bought from eBay. The genuine one from TPS was nearly £100 more :surprised:

It is the new revised pump and it fitted spot on :happy2:

I was the same as you, after reading through many of the other great build threads on here, they give you the inspiration to have a go yourself.
Which I certainly am doing

I gave the GTI quick clean today to freshen it up a little and see how it stands now, after the Ed30 additions

Yes, I am considering some projector headlights, but it will probably after Xmas. It will all depend on if I keep the car or not in the new year.

Cracking job, car looks awesome! One question for you Rog, what vacuum do you use? even my mums dyson won't leave stripes in the floor mats like that :sad1:

:signLOL:
Cheers FrameSet, loving yours too :happy2:
I have a George pneumatic wet & dry vacuum,( like the Henry) great bit of kit, nice and powerful. Having said that, that's not how I get the stripes in the mats haha!
After vacuuming, use your carpet shampoo to scrub the mats with your interior brush, then once clean, dry off as much as you can, then with the brush drag the pile one way, then go the opposite way to create the stripes. The stripes will be the width of whatever brush you are using.
You can get even better stripes using the wet vax too. They look impressive but are relatively easy to do
HTH :happy2:
-
I see! thanks Rog, I'm mainly after a powerful vacuum but the stripes do look good! will try it next time I do the interior :)
Cheers,
Matt

It's been a while since I've updated my thread, so I thought I would update it
I've put my car back to standard, as I will be putting the Golf up for sale pretty soon. I've had great fun restoring the Golf, but it's time to move on......to the wife!! (She has just said she may want it!)
Here's how she stands now, after a good clean and sealed with Gtechniq C2v3 :happy2:

The ED30 front splitter (£150 ono) and ED30 rear valance (£200 ono) are up for sale, if anyone is interested please PM me for details :happy2:

Shame your selling up Rog. Whats next on the cards? Super tempted by the front splitter! Just forked out for coilovers yesterday so may be a tad naughty :innocent:

I may not be sell the golf yet, as the wife said she may have it
I'm looking at family sized cars, as we are selling the Octy VRS. I do like the A4 DTM, as it's rare....trying to find one in my budget though, is another story
If you change you mind on the splitter let me know Jay, sometimes it's good to be naughty  :happy2:

Collection preferred.
Pm me if you are interested :happy2:

I'm just giving back a little, as I've learnt so much from similar threads over the years. Even if it helps only one person, thats cool

Money sent across for the front splitter :)
-
Received, thankyou :happy2:
-
Front splitter as expected! Cheers Rog.
Reading through your thread again (for about the 10th time haha), i see you tried to initially replace gasket for the vacuum pump. How did you figure out that it was the wrong gasket? How did the brace break off, just when tightening it all up?
Mine is leaking as well, exactly the same as your original picture. Got a new gasket from TPS using my VIN - surely this gasket should be correct, no?

I did the same as you Ross, but it turned out to be the gasket for the revised pump! And assuming it was the right part, when I tried to fit it, I forced it and snapped the casing
I ended up buying the revised design, as you can replace the gasket if needed.
This is the one I bought off eBay and it's been leak free ever since :happy2:

That's around half the price of TPS!

Audi A4 DTM edition
It needs some love, but is all there, FSH and mechanically very good. Drives like its on rails too :driver:
I will be splitting my time between here and Audi-sport.net. I'll start a build thread and put a link in here, if you would like to follow the progress.

I always liked these, but never thought I would get one. Feel pretty lucky.
They're pretty quick, rare, well specced and look the nuts IMO

Just had a read through. Fabulous job on the DTM, especially on the wheels! Glad to see the golf is staying around
-
The DTM is a great motor Rog. A very "Limited Edition" :notworthy:
2.0L-TFSI, 4x4, bags of space, and a nice place to sit. What's not to love?
Great detailing practice you have too. :congrats:
Have you considered investing in a blower? We use blowers on most high end cars, and for obvious reasons, most dark coloured cars.
Awesome for drying the whole car (if you can do it in time) but also for drying window/door seals, grills, badges, door/boot shuts, wheels, calipers and discs etc etc.
We use Gtechniq and Swissvax for our final coatings etc but for the wash stages, we use Autobrite Direct products.
They really do work well and are a great price!
We use....
Very Cherry Non Acid Wheel cleaner
MagiFoam Sno-foam
Purple Velvet Shampoo
Citrus Wash Cleaner/Degreaser APC
Purple Rain Decon-Fallout cleaner
Just the Tonic Tar + Glue remover
Definitely worth a try :happy2:
