Title: How much power can the standard clutch?
Post by: Alfalfa91 on April 09, 2015, 07:34:57 pm
Alright,

Just has a quick scope for this question but can't find a straight answer,

How much power can the standard gti clutch handle?

Cheers in advance.

How long is a piece of string?

Some will go STRAIGHT AWAY at stage 1 whereas other are fine at stage 2+, there is no real "breakng point". Will depend on a myriad of variables including the age of the clutch, the miles it has had on it, the type of abuse it's already had etc etc etc.

If your planning on tuning your car then plan on an uprated clutch and if you find you don't need one after your car has been mapped then happy days as you've saved £1k.

It's not power, it's torque that kills the clutch.

Stage 1 K03 has less power than a standard Audi S3 with same clutch, but the mapped GTI will have enough torque to kill the clutch.

As MC says above, there isn't really a set limit. Some clutches will slip at stage 1, other won't slip untill stage 2+.

Typically as these cars are getting older and higher mileage, it's more common for clutch slip at stage 1 on normal GTI & Ed30.

My advice would be to budget for a clutch alongside the cost of a remap. If it doesn't slip straight away, it will eventually

Okay cool, I've no idea how long my clutch has been in or what miles it's covered

I've just had the clutch replaced in mine.  I'm running Revo Stage 1 and the car has done 101k miles, it was remapped in 2008 at around 20k I think.

Okay nice one. I think I might stop at stage 2+, you notice a drop in mpg running that?

That's not to bad like. Ki have no idea when my couch was last done or how many miles it's covered.
