Title: Jamie's Black 5 Door GTi *Sold* Now driving an S3
Post by: jayha11 on May 09, 2015, 02:49:07 pm
Hi All

This is my first VAG car after owning a mixed bag of cars over the years including a couple of Fiesta ST's and 3 Impreza STI's in various guises.

Darth is currently on 79k with full VW service history. Completely standard with a basic spec. I had looked at higher spec examples but none of them came close to the condition I had set out for.

I had not planned a great deal project wise but the list of completed modifications is starting to grow..... :jumping:

SPEC TO DATE:
18" Hartmann 5x112 Porsche Turbo replica Alloys
Amax Coilover Suspension Kit
Pressed Plates
Rear Plate LED Upgrade
Rear Plate Holder - ABT
Black GTI Badges
Revo Performance Panel Filter
Edition 30 Rear Bumper
MK6 Rear boot badge/handle in black/carbon
US front grill
Vented fog covers
Chrome tipped interior switches
A4 Exhaust Tips

I am sure the list will continue to grow........Anyway enough talk, here are some pics of the progress so far.

As I inherited it:

First up was to give it a really good wash and set to work on some light swirls along with the hazy headlights:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjayzredfezz%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_2460_zpsj4e4glvd.jpg&hash=26aec0970d1639654b28df9e00d088024317fe15)

New center caps to replace the corroded ones:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjayzredfezz%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_2172_zpsavms5v3x.jpg&hash=4e687e5e68767df50c469dc9391524cd028ae1bc)

Already gone through a few rear badges as the original was corroded. Settled on the black with chrome edging:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjayzredfezz%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_2977_zpsq7qvkk7p.jpg&hash=8ec08f12e326f3ad36cde4b755877600f5651c2f)

I received this in the post the other day. It is not genuine but the quality and fit is A1!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjayzredfezz%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_2751_zpsu3qadx4i.jpg&hash=4d439489c393fb47e1d4132c0f4082a5c3f3b991)

And here it is fitted along with the vented fog covers I picked up and the gloss black badges:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjayzredfezz%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_2986_zpsictlky5w.jpg&hash=81b87070c52f223b5c9e7a505fe3b58faa302ac4)

Not sure what the plan is with the front plate, I have read up on a few members projects and seen the use of magnets and suckers so I just need to figure out which route I want to go down.

Started wrapping some interior parts as the wheel covers had some sightly scratches on them:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjayzredfezz%2FGolf_GTI%2FIMG_2549_zps6gv7yozv.jpg&hash=62cd99fe561213d8864f1ee825c7b504080ec169)
I may do the center console also but generally want to keep the interior fairly stock.

And lastly just a few little additions:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjayzredfezz%2FGolf_GTI%2F6a652dc2-2e9b-4d05-bcf7-c8307d5543a5_zpsdvstypj3.jpg&hash=ccb35caf68081b224435a5f089f51b443f7c7af3)

That' it for now. I've enjoyed visiting both Ultimate Dubs and the Early Edition shows so there hasn't been much progress lately. Not sure whats next but will post my progress. Thanks for looking.

I painted it Ruggy as I had paint left over from a previous project.

I was tempted to do that too, but worried about it getting stone chipped and the silver poking through.

Thanks Callum, I was throwing a few ideas around before I took the plunge. I had to do something as the previous owner must have worn rings because they were scratched to high heaven!

Bit of an update. I had been toying with fitting an R32 rear bumper/exhaust as it was proving hard to find an edition 30 rear bumper. I then stumbled across a mint ed30 bumper on Ebay, few texts and 160 mile round trip on Friday night to Milton Keynes it was in my possession. Fitting was pretty straight forward apart from the odd seized screw in the arches. I have also reverted back to the standard chrome front VW badge rather than the black one. Thinking about lowering it once the MOT is out the way next month.

Thanks shoaybmakda

Next on the cards is a bit of a brake system tidy up I think. calipers to be re-done in gloss red and any exposed/rusty brackets housings will get some Black Hammerite treatment. Hopefully get this done next weekend.

If you've gone back to a silver badge, do you fancy selling me your black one?
I was going to paint mine but when I took it off I discovered 2 clips have snapped and the 3rd clip is on the verge of breaking.
Cheers

Thanks for the replies guys. To answer a few questions:

I swapped the black badge for the standard one so no longer have it sorry.
The smooth front grill was sourced on Ebay for around £35
The front plate is still sat on my dashboard as I am still unsure what to do with it

Just had to order a new tyre as the side wall was sliced right open by a raised drain on my travels yesterday! Ruining my street cred rolling round on the space saver!

Thought Id pop a quick update up seeing as Darth has flown through his mot today  :jumpmove:

No real changes since the Edition 30 rear bumper. I am off to Bugjam next Sunday so will see if there is anything to tempt me.
Only 80 days until my Florida holiday now. Once I am back I will get the cambelt and follower changed and then set about a stage 1 map I think.

Cant put an update up without a photo so heres a quick one from last nights pre-inspection wash.

There is your answer :signLOL: What I done was attached really strong magents to the back of my lower honey comb grill, and two sticking out on the back  of my plate, so it sits flush with the grill and is easily removable

A word of warning, I went a bit overkill with the adhesive I used to attach the magnets to the back of my grill. It melted right through the grill, causing raised bubbled plastic on the front :ashamed:

Finally got around to fitting all the interior goodies I picked up before my holiday.

A moment of madness in Florida now finds me engaged and wedding planning.... may hamper some of the immediate mods I had planned! Full service including cambelt, water pump and cam follower booked in next week. Not much planned unless Santa brings me any surprises now.

Here are a few pics of the parts fitted.

I hadn't planned much more for the Golf after treating it to a £475 cambelt, water pump, cam follower and major service last week but here I am with an update.
All be it a fairly small one...

With the saving in full swing for the wedding I am trying to avoid any of the big mods and working through my list of planned OEM upgrades.
I sourced some Audi A4 exhaust tips.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fu255%2Fjayzredfezz%2FIMG_6464_zpsur8wgaym.jpg&hash=73103c263ef6e8e2054b9a725aa59ec60dd3ca01)
These are 75mm in diameter and slot straight over the standard tips (Very snug fit and needs some persuasion with a rubber mallet)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fu255%2Fjayzredfezz%2FIMG_6586_zpspbqylm3x.jpg&hash=e83cc1fa25b13d072fd0441bede5d76334582125)
For the princely sum of £18 delivered I am pretty chuffed with the outcome!

Next up I plan to obtain a MK6 Boot handle/badge to replace the dated MK5 version.

Title: My Black OEM+ Progress Thread *Updated 08.02.16*
Post by: jayha11 on February 08, 2016, 01:22:35 pm
Progress has been painfully slow over the last few months  :sad1: but I have had a few small additions last week...

Firstly I swapped the flat white wormed boot handle for a newer version, this actually came off a Passat and fit fine. Only draw back is the loss of the slow close function which I am not too fussed about in all honesty. Before fitting I removed the badge and painted the backing in gloss black. Looks so much better now!

Starting to stockpile a few more bits at the moment and currently toying whether to refurbish the Monzas or sell on to replace with something else?

Really like the alloys colour, is it a dark grey or gun metal, and do they come like that?

Nice tips as well.  :happy2:

Cheers dude. They were powder coated by the previous owner. The receipt states metallic anthracite as the colour and they have a nice 'pop' in the sun!

Can I ask a question.

Was the interior grab handles easy to change, if so any notes on how you did it, The drivers side on mine is scuffed like your old ones and at some point I'll be getting some new ones. (I am a vw newbie and willing to take on small work myself).

(I have ordered the Haynes manual the tools, but thought I'd ask).

Its simple buddy. It just prises out. No screws or anything. Then unclip the switches and swap over into the new handle before connecting/re-fitting. Go and order the part from VW though. I paid less than £15. Ebay sellers all want £25+

Ive been stuck in limbo a bit with the MK5 lately. I had been weighing up whether to sell up and go for a 6R but I have finally decided to stick with the MK5 until the end of next year when I will be a married man and hopefully much better off financially (Unless bridezilla bankrupts me)

First up was some less obvious modifications. A quick trip to Dubunit for Matt to fit my ECS subframe bolt set and a SuperPro dogbone insert complete with a new stretch bolt. This was more for peace of mind than anything as I have been hearing the odd knock when pulling away.

Once that was done I could fit some of the more obvious parts I had been collecting.

First up was the rear de-wiper kit. I had opted for an acrylic option rather than the glass/rubber bung offerings.

The arm was seized to the motor shaft so there was only one thing for it, bring on the hacksaw!

Rainex will be my friend now I have lost the ability to clear the rear window
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjayzredfezz%2FGolf_GTI%2F823C5B2D-D8C9-4454-9DB1-02129228695F_zpsngol1xht.jpg&hash=4b0b987a1a31b8ee0ef30c39e6349a41a02d36de)

I know this mod is not to everyone's tase as it favours form over function but in all honesty I  have never used the wiper so it wasnt much of a loss to me.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjayzredfezz%2FGolf_GTI%2FAC0449C1-4733-44FD-A67F-F799D0AD04CD_zpsevlmrnpa.jpg&hash=71759fbe3807e904468657905691c25b0fbcd4f3)

Lastly I fitted an ABT plate holder (To the rear only)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjayzredfezz%2FGolf_GTI%2F91BB3CC8-806A-43DA-ADE9-5C04184A0C12_zpsxd4sq8bp.jpg&hash=58b0be789b53ea73f2d260c132f84966255c2aca)

That's it for now. I have a new set of mats to fit which I will drop in after its had a ruddy good clean this weekend. Then I will be off to Ultimate Dubs bright and early Sunday and now doubt pick up more ideas for the Golf.

Quite a big update then as it would appear things have started to escalate with the Golf....

After a few unfortunate incidents my Monzas were in need of a refurbishment. Luckily there is a great local company who offer powder coating at reasonable prices. Silly me though I was mooching around the internet to see if there was anything that tickled my fancy as an alternative, well something did. I found some Hartmann Porsche Turbo replica Alloys which had been freshly refurbished looking for a new home. Fast forward a few hours Friday and they were back home ready to fit.

The calipers needed a refresh beforehand though

Before anyone points out the pads have been painted, this was done by the previous owner so I had no choice but to stick with it

With the addition of the wheels I will be going down the coilover route now so I can get the Golf sitting just right. Hoping to have this done ready for Early Edition along with a full paint correction.

Thanks for reading  :happy2:

Had a delivery last week and have been itching to put it to use...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjayzredfezz%2FGolf_GTI%2FADB30235-106B-489C-8126-0AD31053DDD4_zpsandisx1n.jpg&hash=56dc2beccd76ca1ad7755241b2748313132905ee)

Dropped the car off at Dub Unit on Tuesday for fitting. Anybody located in the West Midlands in need of a specialist should look Matt up, he is a wizard when it comes to all things Dub!

Just a quick pick for now as it will be going back in next week once its settled for some minor adjustments. Already running slight rake but the front needs to go lower as there is still an arch gap.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjayzredfezz%2FGolf_GTI%2F8439C39A-CFBF-45A3-A142-174CD6F54617_zpshz9ti7op.jpg&hash=836e9ed431bf07d360bb8db98e3937723c6900b2)

What I will say is the ride quality is no worse than the standard set-up was. Given the majority of the standard suspension was probably 10 years old it had a fair bit of bounce in it. The only time I have noticed the difference so far is whilst negotiating speed bumps. Very impressed so far for a set of coilovers that cost me £135 from Euro Car Parts thanks to a discount code. For the price I thought they were worth a punt!

Will post more pictures next week once its been back in for minor tweeks

Didn't realise it had been so long since my last update!

Had a bit of a set back regarding my crusty arches, turns out they have been previously painted as the readings showed. The technician at VW Coventry thinks this may have been an early attempt to sort out some minor blistering but as its not factory paint now my claim cannot go forward. So I am on the hunt for a pair of clean LC9Z wings.

The coilovers have settled now. I did wind the fronts down a further 15mm after removing 1" of the arch liner and the 'screw mod'
Still riding nicely and I have no regrets on choosing them.

I have ordered some new centre caps in keeping with the black/red/gold theme I am working on. I have also painted the rear boot badge gloss black and added some carbon vinyl behind it which I think works pretty well. This prompted me to switch back to the black VW badge up front also.

Only plans at the moment are to get the wings changed and maybe look at dropping it a little more. I have started looking at exhaust systems too but with all the stuff I am paying out for wedding wise I will have to see what bonus I pick up in a few months time.

I will sign off with a few photos of the Golf currently. Thanks for reading :-)

Its been a hectic month full of weddings and birthdays for me so progress has been somewhat slow.

I gave the interior a deep clean last week paying attention to the steering wheel as I wanted to get rid of shine that had built up over time. I used a vanish magic pad and its came out really well going back to a matt finish
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjayzredfezz%2FGolf_GTI%2F1A615DB2-49EA-4FCD-92D4-704C507B6C11_zps0ecz9v4e.jpg&hash=7a923a6ba3822602cbf128fdfc8ee0d480ade0b8)

I also had chance to get my new 'stubby' aerial on..

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjayzredfezz%2FGolf_GTI%2F0441535F-8302-4231-8456-B50A03F3B141_zpshc0ak7fs.png&hash=02af996884d90712e4f944b4451156257f8e84a5)

The car will be on our stand at Inters on Sunday 10th July which I am really looking forward to! I have a fair few bits to get done before this however...

Fit new front rolled wings
Machine polish headlights again
Re-charge the Air con
Fix paint chip on rear bumper
Remove NS rear brake disc dust shield (Rattling)

I am still deciding how much further I should take the MK5 as the thoughts of a MK6 R are starting to get unbearable  :jumping:

Thanks for reading as always  :happy2:

Post by: jayha11 on June 15, 2016, 10:55:37 am
I have been on the prowl for a pair of wings for the last few months after finding out the original wings had received some additional paint since leaving the factory
This had proved a lot more difficult than I first thought! First I tried a reputable paint shop selling new (non genuine) wings painted to your requirements. Upon receiving them there were paint runs, lacquer defects and shoddy polishing leaving more swirls than my 11 year old Golf has! After some exchanges with the seller they went back and the hunt continued...

Friday I found an LC9Z 06 plate Golf that had just arrived at my local breakers under a destruction order by the police. A short drive and £120 lter I was the owner of a pair of very clean and rust free wings  :jumpmove:

I spent Saturday cleaning up the insides and hitting them with a good coating of underseal to hopefully ensure some longevity. I then battled the typical English weather managing to get one of them swapped over.

Original crusty wing
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjayzredfezz%2FGolf_GTI%2F240C6F3E-DB43-4971-8806-8D995B159F88_zpsgel1kvnr.jpg&hash=8648991e3310b179d50598eec9d805f1ff243a6b)

All stripped down
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjayzredfezz%2FGolf_GTI%2F6D5A4E06-A4AD-43DF-970C-5F57B8EB2556_zpsrsslasjo.jpg&hash=441cca0988f46e1d3f42e1917d2e4eadb06d796b)

Built back up
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjayzredfezz%2FGolf_GTI%2FFBA20A43-15B9-48DF-97CF-251DE3F81735_zpsihynaeaf.jpg&hash=fd810d36c726978de8236730fa727e90da47b4ac)

I am pretty happy with how it went. The only stumbling block I had was the torx headed bolt located behind the door, I had to heat this up to remove and sourced a replacement from VW. The fit is spot on, all panel gaps are as before which is a great result. No more crusty wing! Hoping the weather dries up so I can swap the drivers side over too this weekend.

Thanks for reading

All the little things make such a big difference. Car looks mint mate. Could you tell me where you got the chrome window switches from? Been looking on eBay but don't fancy ordering them from China as they probably won't turn up. Cheers

Thanks for the kind comments! Switches are Ebay China specials mate! Think they cost £25 and took about 2 weeks to come. If your paying via Paypal your protected if they didn't turn up  :happy2:

I was genuinely gutted to see the Golf drive off into the sunset on Tuesday, hope the new owner looks after it. I did point him to the forum so will wait and see if it pops back up on here. Really loving the S3 though!
