Title: New member , some advice please
Post by: S2YOB on May 24, 2015, 03:57:23 pm
Afternoon all,

I am looking at selling my BMW 530D sport and getting a GTI but am really stuck with manual or DSG.

I love the auto in my BMW and would prefer the DSG but am worried about horror stories with the mecatronic unit.

I am not worried about other bits as i work in the motor parts trade.

Any other advice would be good.

Regards

Nick

Remember you only hear the horror stories on these but I also was a bit worried when I got mine and didn't even really see any service history and mine is still good (Has done 114,000 miles).
When you test drive one just make sure it runs through the gears smoothly and no flashing of the PRNDS on the dash and serviced every 40k if I'm correct?
I'm sure if you have a little search on here or Google you will find a few other things to look for :happy2:
If you like your autos you will love the DSG btw!

Hope this helps a little

if you do alot of town driving definately go for DSG, makes city driving so much more bearable and it's blisteringly quick when you use sport mode or manual.

If anything I find it hard to find enough decent road to use it on!

Manual all day, I had the pleasure of driving a C63 black series recently and even in that i wanted a clutch so badly, autos just don't do it for me.

But if you want the DSG then don't worry about the mechatronics, as said just check it thourougly and make sure its been maintained properly, for every DSG that goes wrong there's probably 5 manuals that have to have the clutches replaced and that's not a cheap job either, just get what you want and enjoy it  :happy2:

Manual manual manual! Don't let the machines take over! Imagine the cost if it goes wrong!

For me all the driving satisfaction and skill comes with a manual box

I'm in the manual club too. I have driven many DSGs from diesels to R32s and although they are brilliant, they just make driving too easy for me. A GTI is a car designed to be driven not the other way round. I have always said if I got a VAG diesel it would have to be a DSG, they work so well in them. So what does that say to you?!

DSG all day...

Old people and girls have Auto's
A direct-shift gearbox (German: Direkt-Schalt-Getriebe), commonly abbreviated to DSG, is an electronically controlled dual-clutch multiple-shaft manual gearbox.

Hence your point is invalid! :P And Im not old yet!

I've got a manual and my brother has a DSG Ed30, the DSG is a pretty amazing box but I'd still not swap my manual for DSG.

Some of these comments are hilarious, most high end performance cars are "Autos" now, therefore must be all for girls/old people. Its a personal preference, I enjoy both manuals as well as the DSG, but for me right now with my circumstances DSG is the best gearbox.

Wasn't looking for an auto but mine came up at the right time at a very good price so i couldn't say no.

Haven't looked back since, the DSG is amazing.

In drive mode you won't even feel gear changes, then sport mode it still revs high and pulls really well.

I love my manual and the clutch is so light on these cars that town driving is no problem at all. I would like a go in a DSG though.

I have got a dsg and love it but you can drive it as a manual if you want
As long as the oil is changed when it should should not give you any problems

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the manual slightly faster overall compared to the dsg.  :popcornsoda:
