Title: Rholtby Tornado Red Editon 30
Post by: Rholtby on June 17, 2015, 11:16:12 pm
Hi guys and gals. I've always been a fan of the Golf MK5 and originally wanted an R32 but due to changing jobs and losing put on a company car I chose to hunt for an ED30. A few months of hunting and this beauty popped up. I am so glad I went Ed30 I may be biased now but I think they are a better looking car than the R32.

What's be done so far
▪ New rear light
▪ Aftermarket VW style head unit
▪ Dbilas induction kit with new K&N filter
▪ DRL depo headlights
▪ Revision G diverted valve
▪ New PCV
▪ NGK laser platinum spark plugs
▪ 10,000mile service
▪ Gloss black badges
▪ stainless steel foot rest
▪ Pressed plates
▪ HID bulb upgrade
▪ wind deflectors
▪ chrome tipped window switches
▪ GTI seat inserts
▪ Eibach lowering springs (not fitted yet)

First things first was fit a new rear light as the passenger outer light was somehow warped inwards.

So here she is. I got her home and got a bit over excited and foamed all over the car  :ashamed:

Then she was polished with autogleam and waxed with

Then a pal decided he wanted to see my new toy, knowing it's better than his

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fw388%2Frholtby%2F9A86E05D-800F-4AED-A418-D1FC276A9C5F.jpg&hash=8360ef90b24748de0f4a8c65e43a7109b8c92af3)

And that's it so far now I'm at work and taken the car for her first trip, with me, to France. Here she is waiting patiently while Eurotunnel cancelled my crossing for no reason

Sweet looking ride! I would say add a polo aerial to your list as its only about £12 and it does get rid of a certain RC car look that comes with the standard aerial. :happy2:

Awesome car, in my opinion far better thar R32 which is heavy, consuming and has no tuning potential!  :driver:
Go for Gun metal grey wheels!  :happy2:

Thanks I'll have a look at those and get one ordered.

Thanks. After having a read about and speaking to a friend who had an ED30 he said the same thing about the R32.

Gun metal grey will most probably be the one unless anyone has any other suggestions.

Thanks for looking and appologies for picture quality, I'm an iPhone user unfortunately

Firstly I apologies for the picture quality. I'm an iPhone user

I've fitted my new head unit today. Unfortunately it's a Chinese copy of the VW original but all seems to work fine so far.

Those wires are the two aerials that connect to the original headunit.  Your new headunit should have come with an adapter to fit one of those into it.  You can also get twin adapters too.

Google twin fakra antenna adapter or single fakra antenna adapter.

A minor update, got myself a second hand engine cover, saves cutting mine up. It looks so much better already although I do need to swap the badge over, plus I'm thinking of giving it a lick of paint, possibly some wrap. Anyways here it is:

Also gave the car a good clean yesterday before the rain started and couldn't resist a picture out in the countryside
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fw388%2Frholtby%2F3688B462-7C1F-49A0-AD1A-01DD373EAF67.jpg&hash=25c8437bdbb992f95ff4c66f8f53f9d0f915f403)

Ive tried to make this ^^^ my sig pic but it doesn't work, any ideas?

So I had a problem over the past few weeks, initially I thought it was some bad fuel but after running down and refilling with V power nothing changed. So my car was hunting at idle and struggling when in the lower rev range. After a diagnostics scan multiple faults came up including misfires.

Changed the plugs:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fw388%2Frholtby%2F88EFFA4A-8B90-4F87-90F4-6A6EDAAAB506.jpg&hash=69051b74eec5ad38c4c18f36523cf9f6fb758d5c)

They cost a few quid

Then came a new revision G DV:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fw388%2Frholtby%2FDF54C9A0-7F64-4E88-B5EC-CCCA3EDAC6E8.jpg&hash=8b95907b2f369c208d59d02caf20e5f222b922ba)

I got a second opinion from Colin Gunning's in Hertford, they immediately knew and told me to change the PCV, which had been my initial thought:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fw388%2Frholtby%2F0E7DD264-6B66-411D-8393-2CC41CDEEDF4.jpg&hash=94da96fc6604c6a939b8310a2afb525e67e0499f)

New vs Old:

So it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be to change these over. So far I am happy with how they look but I haven't been for a drive yet.

I think some Phillips extreme or whatever they're called bulbs will finish these off nicely. I may even go for a HID conversion.

Unfortunately Tuesday night I got pulled for my number plates so I've ordered some more UK legal pressed plates

Thanks, yeah hopefully going for a remap early summer. I need to get myself a decent set of tyres in the spring first. I may well go for an exhaust at some point, possibly just Cat-back as its only ever going to be a daily car.

Unfortunately whilst at work (in France) something put a hole in the side of my tyre so I had to go and get myself a budget tyre fitted quickly before coming back home. Complete waste of £50
Title: Re: Rholtby Tornado Red Editon 30

So it's been a while since an update. The idea of exhaust or remap has gone on hold for now. So since my last update there has been a couple of minor changes
▪ changed the DRL headlight for ones with the black inners, much better
▪ gloss black badges, but had to remove the rear one as it didn't fit properly
▪ 2 new Pierelli Piero Rosso's on the front
▪ MOT which it passed no dramas
▪ 10,000 miles service at Colin gunning Hertford which revealed a rear spring has snapped and need a new rear tyres
▪ ordered a series of eibach lowering springs
▪ BIGGEST UPDATE the car is in this week to have the front bumper resprayed as the previous owner had obviously had it done to a poor standard so all the lacquer had started to peel

Here's how it looks waiting to board the train back to work. As you can see the lacquer peel is very noticeable

Got the car back Friday morning, I am rather pleased with the work although going to pop back and possibly get them to go over some of it again as there seems to be some small dimples in the paintwork, but still 100% better than it was. Fitted my silvertech bulbs in yhe front too.

Update:

Got my eibach's on with bilstein shocks, it's slightly more bumpy but nothing unsaleable.

Unfortunately I've noticed rust coming through a rear arch so been and booked the car in. Having good the whole rear quarter sprayed.
