Hi guys been on the forum for a while but have never got round to posting anything!
I've had 3 golfs so far and mk5 has been the best by far !!
My first one was a mk4 tornado red anniversary pictured below next to my dads edition 30 :jumping:
(https://ci6.googleusercontent.com/proxy/COQADph1kPn7UoYBsy7l3oU-KS4PpEccIC8kq3Mvv60-c3y9-prowr0OcUDA-nCxoWyjbjkMdcSew2T4BPnwq6w83NLySDr4vQkPvjHevOFSdWuSan78CDP8rmkyxuT561TUwy9jZbyGkNVFYuZqIpBMuXTfx5Qh9sUGjjJweGM8Rg=s0-d-e1-ft#https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/t31.0-8/10623671_531899023622112_4396071359812428685_o.jpg)
I then sold that and got a mk6 in candy white! Great car but the 110bhp diesel was a bit boring :indifferent:
(https://ci5.googleusercontent.com/proxy/RMok-6DcF6nuegKWtKw4CECb77Nf1-UC3hk1KRtSZ2C9lUsE-NAB1O9KNEOWZrHe15v9QuwNgAje9xs_vjJIcDrfc-dO7xmNH4LEzUsmaBXZZNXh4MoUoiZawbg3nkS1hzXV__U3T2KVU1entdD0dCaHRjlaJxzeucunwtM8rPIgGPo32C6qRNW7I6S9U1abUjTTT3jinyFQrTtf6t4dMezHXqvcfppbdlnJG2llmSvaEZEW=s0-d-e1-ft#https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/10989162_646717645473582_3524172878048346259_n.jpg?oh=6ba57fef9287fe881e518dbd16c24aa3&oe=5626B46F)
And finally onto my mk5 GTI, it has a miltek turbo back exhaust, neuspeed P-flo intake and GFB divertor valve and has been colour coded !

Thanks Guys hope the photos tie in with the previous post above :happy2:
-
Looks great mate, really like the Anni aswell :happy2:
Mine was also parked in the car park at the SCS, I didn't see yours though. You look like you must be quite close to me judging by the pic outside Audi at whistleberry. I haven't seen it out and about though.
-
Thanks mate! Yeah im just round the corner from the merc garage in Hamilton, small world eh :signLOL:
-
Another update :driver:
Golf was due a service so decided to treat it to some new spark plugs and coilpacks... Preventative maintenance and all that :rolleye:
So I sourced the parts from a few places online and managed to spend a small fortune !!
I got:
millers nanodrive 5w40
NGK iridium Sparks
Red top coil packs
Magnetic sump plug
All filters changed
And I decided to use the k&n recharge kit for my neuspeed cone as I beleive they are pretty similar

I also found a photo in the sun from a few weeks back just after I machine polished it and couldn't believe how purply the metallic black is in direct sunlight :surprised:

Loving that last pic!
What paint have you got?
-
I'm not sure on the code or anything it's metallic black but changes colour depending on the lighting :ashamed:

so went to Cleanfest yesterday in my dad's edition 30, been for sale the past month but still no interest :indifferent:

Nice set of cars

So since the weather had been good the past few days I thought it was time I put my girlfriends new stripes on her mini since I kept putting it off ! :booty:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn171%2FJordan_Millar%2FIMG_2632_zpsusuzj5a5.jpg&hash=6d4a8de0ae09c7846e230a275494dad8ebc6729c)
After washing it and putting the stripes on we I painted the calipers red to tidy them up a bit as her new wheels were quite open !

I usually use hamerite smooth but ended up with halfords high temp paint and id say it gives a more red look instead of the hammerites more orangey appearance :happy2:
I also tried my dads editon30 wheels but really didnt like them on my car :ashamed:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn171%2FJordan_Millar%2FIMG_1798_zpsat5pfpa2.jpg&hash=2bb14c01acc315eb8a3d61900ee367f90eee19f2)
I couldnt believe the size difference even though both wheels are only 18" so decided to stick with my own atm but currently on the look out for some team dynamic 1.2's or rota grids
So after all that last night I managed to curb my first ever wheel an absolute peach whilst driving :signLOL: so will need to give the lip a rub down and touch up to hide the mess :ashamed:

Great job on the mini calipers mate, they look superb. I take it from the pics they were done in situ and not removed? Did u just mask everything off? Looks a decent match for the gti calipers aswell. Brushed or sprayed on? Cheers
-
Thanks mate ! yeah painted in situ. Steel brushed everything and wiped the calipers and hubs with some degreaser. I just covered the caliper with a cloth and put cardboard behind the disc to cover most of the wheel arch etc and sprayed the hub with hammerite smooth silver spray paint. I just wiped the excess off with degreaser and spun the disk round a bit to get the spot that was hidden.
For the calipers I just used a tin of the red halfords paint and a half inch brush and gave them 2 coats each! Came up really well!
-
Those calipers have come up beautifully! My golf has them dingy grey ones, but as luck would have it I'm off work tomorrow and I'm going to attempt this!
-
You can't go wrong! Nice and easy way to smarten things up :drinking:

Nice one ! looks great mate ! :notworthy:

UPDATE
So at the weekend my OCD kicked in and I decided to tidy up the front wheel arches and have a look at the condition of the sills behind the arch liners as its a pretty weak spot on the mk5 and probably alot of other cars too !
I started off by undoing all the screws that hold the liner in place and then wiggled it out...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn171%2FJordan_Millar%2FIMG_29771_zpsk7lzkgix.jpg&hash=392b82f7f13bbe04cfa6b271e561401279bcc650)
This revealed 10 years worth of dirt and crap !
Passenger Side
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn171%2FJordan_Millar%2FIMG_29791_zpsjvgnifl4.jpg&hash=77582e8ac55c7a108c6891aff7bd8f7b0af8ed76)
When I went round to the drivers side and it was all cleaned up, I noticed a bit of surface rust in the same area...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn171%2FJordan_Millar%2FIMG_29951_zpsjqtjkqmt.jpg&hash=ffc4d538e0b9cb7d4d7be6c480d0a50d723056ef)

Outcame the sand paper, primer and black paint to try and sort this out :fighting:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn171%2FJordan_Millar%2FIMG_29961_zpsqzeagvpt.jpg&hash=7afb52abe890358b504480b73f3d072030e0f67c)
Once I had sorted that I got a bit carried away and decided to give the shockers and most rusty looking bits a coat of black hammerite
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn171%2FJordan_Millar%2FIMG_30041_zpslfwo45vu.jpg&hash=dcb69e69a55128c9816e53020e1cb674af0c13e8)
I gave the liners a good clean and a coating of chemical guys trim gel to bring them back to life...
I also took the little retaining clips of the calipers gave them a coat of silver hammerite and I also painted the 2 most noticeable screws in the wheel arch silver as it gives a really clean look IMO
I had also previously painted the steering wheel caps or whatever they are called black as they looked a bit tatty. But I decided to also paint the GTI part of the steering wheel in black as well to finish off the look  Once I had painted it black though the GTI letters didn't really stand out so I used a tornado red touch up stick to go over the letters, its not perfect but I think it looks pretty cool :signLOL:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn171%2FJordan_Millar%2FIMG_29991_zpsiij0uqff.jpg&hash=939ec58368ac7308563fb496320de4c5dbe368b1)

-
Nice work. :congrats:
PS: I think the screws in the liners you painted silver are originally black.
-
Yeah you are right Shoduci ! I seen it on a mk4 at a show and thought i'd see how it looked :innocent:
-
The screws now stand out a bit more. Much like the wheel GTI badge. It's your personal customization. :drinking:
-
I've got this thread on notify and am just completely jacking all your ideas. :P :jumpmove:
-
:signLOL: not a problem Bert, im glad you like everything so far :happy2:
-
After looking through the forum I discovered another relatively cheap mod I could try  The parts I decided to change were the gear linkage bushes and bracket bushes to 42DD and an ebay special short shifter as its pretty much the same as the forge one but loads cheaper! I'll try my best to show how I done it as its really straight forward all you need is a socket set and some spare time
Short shifter

So to start with I removed the pipe for my induction kit and the battery and its tray. It saves having to work in a tight space but I dont think its absolutely necessary !
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn171%2FJordan_Millar%2FIMG_30471_zpsi5imwnfy.jpg&hash=6a4fde6a8c6d7036cf4e6241d25c1d7ba0a630cb)

I then removed the old shifter by undoing the metal clips on the gear linkages and the side to side part of the shifter. The gear linkage on the left is for the throw of the gear stick and the linkage on the right is for side to side movement of the gear stick.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn171%2FJordan_Millar%2FIMG_30511_zpsuyzjqquj.jpg&hash=a0354873502af34ac9af260e7341f8de0642831f)
Once at this stage, I began by tackling the linkage bracket. It has 3, 13mm bolts that secure the bracket in place and underneath them lies the rubber bushes jammed between the hole in the bracket. I slackened each one off so that the bracket was lose. I then done one at a time then tightened them all up.
old vs new

I gave the bolts a lick off silver paint to tidy them up and a photo of them fitted...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn171%2FJordan_Millar%2FIMG_30541_zpsvbs8uukp.jpg&hash=7f9aa1a498b6b008df56a306c0b62e8ec8f7cb31)
Next I lined the the short shifter on the spline, its really easy to locate as the shifter and the spline both have a tooth missing to ensure they line up correctly.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn171%2FJordan_Millar%2FIMG_30551_zpsrfftewch.jpg&hash=337352cdf1bc375091ed1f0422c6e0baa0db0031)
old vs new
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn171%2FJordan_Millar%2FIMG_30521_zpsz2mml3x8.jpg&hash=6f14cb639469bb1e31213870780d6e9c9a267ddd)
Now onto the gear linkages. They have a rubber insert thats held in place with 4 diagonal plastic tabs. In order to get them out you have to break these tabs. I used a slotted screw driver and a rubber mallet to do this. Once you pop the old rubber bushes out you can click the new ones into place.

So I assembled everything back together...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fnn171%2FJordan_Millar%2FIMG_30591_zpsj0oenyy5.jpg&hash=b338f19b09b8079bf42ea66e1ae147d60af95ea7)
Got in the car, wiggled the gearstick to make sure it was in neutral, foot on the clutch and couldnt put it into 1st or 2nd gear :sad1:. 3rd to 6th were fine but I couldnt undertsand what was wrong. At first I thought the new short shifter wasnt moving freely enough to select the gears to farted about with it for a bit but still no joy.
With a bit of googling I found a video on how to adjust the gear linkages as any movement of the gear stick in the car whilst fitting can throw the linkages out of sync :indifferent:
To do this I prised off the gearstick surround and youll find a hole on the stick and a hole at the base. I put an alan key through them both to keep the stick in place. Back round to the engine bay and I squeezed the linkages so that the spring compressed and twisedt the end to lock them in place like so...

I then pushed down on the shirt shifter about a 1/4 inch and twisted it anti clockwise. I undone the gear linkage on the right grabed the threaded part of the cable. Then pushed the shifter clockwise and undone the left hand side gear linkage so it grabed its cable. Took out the the alan key from the car and popped the surround back on.
Immediately the gears felt alot better and smoother and i could now engage 1st and 2nd gear :jumping:
Took the car a drive and the difference was incredible ! shifts are really precise and the throw was nice and short (set at max 40% reduction). Overall great mod that makes such a huge difference for very little money imo :happy2:
Thanks for reading guys
