:(
You can move the gearstick, select what you think is a gear, the linkage is attached, but is stuck in 3rd, no other gears engage - no neutral either.
Any ideas? New box?

Check the top of the g/box the the nut which holds the selector bracket which has both cables connected to it also the the same bracket was fitted back on the key.
This video explains it better before I would be thinking new box etc.

Cheers @doylebros (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6153) I'll take a look tonight! Managed to nurse it home.

Gearlinkage is ok, new box I think, anyone know which code it is off this data sheet? (Can it really be GUT? can't find any of them):

I think it's a V, lol, so GVT not GUT

Sounds like an internal selector fork issue. They can break. Not common, but it happened on MK4s with the O2M gearbox as well. MK5s use the O2Q which is supposed to be an improvement, but it still happens!

Cheers @Pudding (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10733) a gearbox specialist has suggested the selector fault too, but I'm unsure whether to have the current box rebuilt with the idea of the selector being at fault (which could be quite a cheap fix) to then discover it needs a shed load of parts to rebuild' ... it does have 155k on it through a lot of hard miles.... Hmm,
Perhaps it's probably better to just grab a second hand box with 50k or so on and swap it out.

Noticed this as a price guide if you go the replacement g/box route http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK5-GTI-6-SPEED-GEARBOX-GVT-EDITION-30-TT-A3-LEON-OCTAVIA-VRS-/151214481698?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item233515e122

@doylebros (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6153) cheers, I've been scanning 'the bay', a few to go at... luckily I've got a few other modes of motion so will wait out a decent low milage box I think. Cheers both! :)

Avoid the same gearbox code. Early boxes have lots of annoying issues. You can use any 02Q box so something 2008 onwards would be best. There is a plastic cap on the end of the box, if it also has a circlip holding it in then that's got the latest bearing.

Thanks mate, I seem to be in it for the long haul with this Mk5, it's a hard car to get rid of.

thats a good find well done mate.

Cheers Pal, yeah it was in great nick from the exterior and it "seems" to be all good so far (famous last words) - got another issue that's shown its head now though, sigh...
Rear Offside ABS sensor has died, Traffic light on the dash and VCDS confirms, iirc the sensor is a PITA on these as it's integral to the wheel bearing, so a whole new unit required, probably cost me another couple of hundred quid... the Saga continues, lol.
