Something I've always wondered - just how fast was a (standard?) Escort Cossie? I lusted over those as a teenager. Seriously, I would have shagged one given the chance.

Are we talking noticably quicker than a mk5 gti? (as a logical benchmark).

I've never driven one either, but I'd bet they were lighter with the same or a bit more power than the standard GTI K03... still I doubt there would be a lot of difference between the two tbh.

Didn't they do a Top Gear (of old) special where they compared old HotHatches to new ones, namely the ECossie and Focus RS (the 2.0T one) of 2003 ish.

220bhp iirc but 4wd don't forget. Standard Golf GTI fast in a straight line I would say. Mine was a standard Monte Carlo edition with 30k miles and the laggy T34 turbo.

I'm sure I've seen a mk2 valver up against a mk5 GTI on some show, was either Top Gear or on ch5.

To be fair I probably should be more than happy with a 200bhp VW years after my fruitless teenage Cosworth obsession...!

A little about my history,

VW Polo 1.0 45BHP (Slowest car I have ever driven!)

VW Corrado VR6 (wrote off )

VW Corrado VR6 Storm (Immediate replacement that I passed onto my father as I had 9 points on my license and insurance was getting ridiculous)

Peugeot 309 1.6 (Picked this up for £100, I finally understood what everyone meant when they said they had a good steer, got rid before MOT was due!)

Renault 5 1.4 (Got this for £200 and the thing went round roundabouts like a go kart, so much fun but got rid when the MOT was due)

VW Polo 1.3 (Fancied going German again, Good little car but was rotting underneath so got rid sharpish)

Fiat Punto 1.2 (Starting going Italian, lovely engine for a 1.2)

Fiat Punto Sporting 1.6 (Fancied an upgrade and got this for about £500, very low mileage, polished it up and sold it for nearly 1k!)

Alfa GTV 2.0TS (Absolutely lovely engine and great steering, unfortunately this lived up to it's reputation with dodgy electrics, got written off when someone backed into it!)

Nissan Micra 1.0 (After the Alfa was written off, got fed up with cars and needed a cheap A-B car, surprising good though!)

Audi A4 1.9TDI remapped to 160BHP (My first own car for years as I was sharing my partner's at the time, needed something ecomonical and bigger as we were expecting our first born)

MK5 Golf GTI (I was itching to have a performance car again and we were finding that the Audi wasn't being used as much as we initally thought so my man maths kicked into place and I got one, I was initally going to get an R32 but I think the running costs would have crippled me, great car but a fair share of niggly problems I want to iron out)

What did you think to the 106gti? I've owned two of them and what a pocket rocket they are! Did you have a pug sport exhaust on it? As soon as I fitted one of them it was an animal lol never had a car where just an exhaust made such a difference. I'd love one now as a toy but I'd look a c*nt haha

I enjoyed it at the start, infact I was loving it coming from a 1.4 sri lol, however, I ended up really hating it after 2 years. Probably didn't help the fact it was lowered 60mm but the crashy, rattling drive was just too much to take after a while. I was forever chasing suspension problems to try and rectify it and gave up in the end

Fantastic little pocket rocket in its day though as you say, but the French Peugeot build quality put me off for life lol. Ideal for cheap trackday fun these days though without a doubt.

Being only 23, I only have three...

Fiat Seicento - First car after passing my test just after my 17th birthday. Engine blew after a top speed run...

VW Polo OpenAir - Second car, had a lot of potential for a show car, but never really had the enthusiasm for it (was only a 1.0l)

VW Golf Gti - Current car, and even now afteralmost 3 years of having her, I still love driving her!

mk1 golf 1.0c (1st car - failed mot on rusty chassis)

Diahatsu charade 1.0l (good car but just a stop gap)

mk2 golf 1.3c (unbelievably slow)

mk2 golf 1.6 driver (best condition car I have ever owned, registered H150 DBC)

Honda CRX 1.6 vtec (best seats ever, great engine but just didn't do it for me. Sold and kept the above mk2)

mk2 golf gti 16v #still got this# (best car I have ever had, and I've had it for 12years. Is undergoing restoration. I have upgraded the engine to a megasquirted ABF, with a short ratio'd peloquin diff'd gearbox - must hurry up and get it finished)

S14a Nissan 200sx (another car I loved. Had it for 6years but it was just starting to go rusty and was sold. I miss it, you don't see many and rwd is something else)

mk5 golf ed30 #current car# (owned for a few years now and can't find anything else yet that I'd change it for. Stage 2+ means it's quick when I want and civilised when I want)

Cool list, how did the 300bhp SAAB compare to the Stage 1 Eddy in your opinion?

Cheers,

To be honest, In a straight line probably very little in it. The Saab running the 2.3 and 15T turbo ran out of puff around 5000RPM but it did not matter as it was really flexible with no lag. Made for a very lazy fast road car, Could do everything in 4th gear from 30MPH upto 130MPH. The engine combo I built was good for well over 400BHP on stock internals too with a GT3071R turbo or the likes.

The Golf wins everywhere else though, Even in stock form the Golf would run rings around the Saab in the twisties! The Saab had about £2k worth of chassis upgrades....Bilstein B12, Fully polybushed, 22mm Rear ARB, Subframe and Steering rack braces, Race engine and gearbox mounts, Quaife LSD etc but was still shocking. Very badly designed chassis and steering rack which is bulkhead mounted meant epic torque-steer.

Enjoyed my time with the 9-3 and still keep my hand in with Saabs as my friend has 2 breathed on examples, He did all my custom mapping on my cars.

Have you owned all those cars with that age?

This is coming from an almost 33 years old as for me that seems a bit...absurd?

I've driven a fair number of different cars, but they were from my family, friends or rent-a-car.
