Today's big job 👨‍🔧🛠
Replacing my cam chain, tensioner, and all the supporting hardware, plus a good service. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous doing  this especially after hearing horror stories about the cam adjuster bolt head stripping out during removal. I even bought a 12mm cobalt drill bit and a backup T55 socket just in case things go sideways!
Luckily, I had my friend that came over to help by keeping a firm grip on the cam bolt tool and the lower breaker bar while I crack it loose from the upper part. Crisis averted.
The Parts List (Bought & Fitted by Me)
☑️ INA cam chain & tensioner
☑️ VW OEM cam adjuster bolt
☑️ Elring VVT seals (x3)
☑️ INA cam follower
☑️ Elring HPFP seal
☑️ Elring rocker cover gasket
☑️ Mann oil filter
☑️ Febi Bilstein 5W-40 engine oil & new sump plug
☑️ APR Blue (R8 style) ignition coilpacks
☑️ NGK BKR7EIX Iridium spark plugs x4
☑️ HPFP fuel Line Upgrade,Converting the fuel lines from the early-model banjo style to the later-model push-fit setup (and drilling a 5mm hole on the new HPFP bamboo fitting).
☑️ DV Relocation Kit brought from aliexpress paired with an OEM K04 throttle intake pipe and a blue silicone throttle body hose from eBay.
Luckly I Bought 2 cam bolt poly drive sockets. 1 is a Laser brand and the other is a BGS brand. Tried the laser Polly drive socket first and it shattered but luckly didn't damage the cam bolt head, then tried the BGS Brand and it came out perfectly👍.
Aside from the VW OEM cam adjuster bolt (sourced from VW Coverdale), all the service and cam chain, gaskets etc from Autodoc & Awesome GTI for the coilpacks and spark plugs.
There is such a massive sense of satisfaction that comes with doing all the work yourself and learning as you go. Not bad for someone who isn't even a mechanic! 😂.

Mk5 General Area / Clutch pedal stuck down only after heavy breaking on track.
« Last post by SwedeGTI on June 14, 2026, 04:35:34 pm »
Hi!

Hopefully you can help me identify what is wrong here. My car is a manual Edition 30 running stage 2. With upgraded clutch Sachs performance and dual mass flywheel, car has only around 50k miles.
I have fully bleed and flush the brake fluid several times in the most careful way possible, added Motul RBF 600 DOT4, the one I got recommended to use on track.
The clutch pedal gets stuck down ONLY after heavy braking, mostly after the long straights on track. I pull it up with the foot and then it works like normal again for the whole lap (I got use to do that at this point)
I have only been able to replicate this on track, it usually happens after two or three laps, so it has to do with something heating up is my guess.
I am using a BBK from brembo with 4 pistons and 365mm discs, front, also bigger brakes on the back A4 S4 calipers.

Good to hear you mk1 is running well, I'm still having the mapping fine tuned. I still not driven mine yet but it is pretty much together.
Look foward to your progress, I'm starting on my inner arches and suspension later this month.

Cheers mate, aye I can just start to see the fronts starting to go under the bottom of the wing at the sill so gonna get the wings off n all and sort that before it gets too bad!

Aye it’s running sweet as a nut, it’s a shade over 200 brake and tbh I dunno if I’d want it any quicker than it is 😂 be good to see some pics of yours like - here’s a couple how mine stands now

Aye mate, pretty much the same craic like, get it all clean and get it zinc primed and painted up.

Only found a small hole at the moment like so im suitably impressed…..the arch liners were holding a massive amount of mud haha!

Aye MK1 has been “done” for a while now, it needs a few bits still as they always do but I’ve done about 2000 miles in it since I finished the conversion, hasn’t skipped a beat tbh
Arch liners hold loads of mud the fronts are terrible that's what causes the sills to rot at the front.

Good to hear you mk1 is running well, I'm still having the mapping fine tuned. I still not driven mine yet but it is pretty much together.
Look foward to your progress, I'm starting on my inner arches and suspension later this month.

And now a bit more about how my car behaved... I have to say I am really proud of the car, but it did have a few issues.
First, I managed to "money shift" not once, but twice. I guess, the Golf revs to 8k RPM now :rolleye: I have been driving the car since new (2007), and I also have other manual cars that I regularly drive. Still, I have not missed any gears, until now.
I miss shifted from 4th to 2nd a couple more times (on top of the the money shifts) but I immediately sensed it and didn't let go of the clutch. I also had problems getting into gear (from 4th to 3rd for example) and also getting our of gear (I got stuck a bit in 2nd gear and I had to double or triple clutch to get to neutral). Based on my experience it looks like it's the clutch pressure bearing but I would not exclude the clutch as well. Might be the engine mounts also...
With these problems in mind, I decided not to push my luck and to end the laps a day early. In total I did 20 laps this trip.

Here is the second to last lap of the trip:

I had the GTR owner as the passenger.
It is a relaxed, but not slow, lap - hence the lack of helmets.
For the non Romanian audience  :jumping:, we are talking about the lack of ESP, how great the brakes feel, how quick the car is in the corners, but how extremely slow it is on the straits.
Also the passenger is, apparently, not well strapped in with the 6 point harness since he's pushing against the center console. He said after the lap we was just "checking the build quality" .

During the whole stay I had problems with the GPS signal - even if I am using a 25Hz logger with an external antenna. But all of the others also had problems with the GPS so it was not me..
Because of this, there is some data loss and some incorrect data displayed in the video.

And last but not least, some more photos of the car (posting them as they become available from the photographers):

Cheers!

How to Guides / Troubleshooting / Re: Boot lid not openimg.

To be honest I think I did good job on repair in rubber sleeve. Connected all the wires by the wiring diagram, checked after each connection. Continuity test and measured voltage between connector in C pillar and each pin on connector to latch, release button, etc. Shows voltage when boot latch is closed on pin 4 of boot latch, other pin 1 and 2 shows voltage the whole time.

I included photo of measuring brown connector pin 4 in C pillar on left side, closed and opened boot latch.

Well, got most of the bits stripped off the old subframe….the amount of surface rust that has come off is mental, but it still seems solid enough

Getting everything to the powder coating place hopefully tomorrow or Monday and then while they are away I’ll crack on with the rust treatment/undersealing/painting of the body.

Also got to order the rear brake lines as both of them just crumbled at the rear 😭 Hopefully still available, if not I’ll make some but I’d like this to be OEM fresh as possible

Probably just going to do the rear calipers myself tbh, I’ve got access to a blasting cabinet to get the thick of the corrosion off and then I’ll just get some new seals and slider pins for them, then get them painted up

Will get some more pictures up when the light is a bit better 😂

Actually had a question regarding the ARB’s - is it worth spending the extra money and getting some H&R/Whiteline type ARB’s or just sticking with the standard ones? I’m not planning on putting it on track as it is my daily……just wondering if the cost is worth it or not? It’s going to be lowered slightly on Blistein B8 Shocks and springs

Cheers
