Yes I would change the adjuster.  Just done mine and did an extensive write up on it all.

I would use INA for the tensioner, chain and adjuster.  I then used elring for all the gaskets etc if not going genuine.

Also get some new cam casing seal rings by elring too.

Wow, almost 3 years since I updated this thread and a whole lot has happened! I’m currently on holiday and sat by the pool a little bored so thought I’d update you all.

Random moody shot…

I had an A3 Quattro that I had as a donor as I had thought about possibly going 4WD and thought against it pretty soon after but the Audis use aluminium crash bars that also fit the golf, just. But it’s a little weight saving…

First track day for it in March 2022 not long after I last posted in this thread:

The day was good other than a safety map cutting the rev limit very low every time the oil temp hit 100°c, spoke with TSR and usual brilliant after sales said to get it down to them and they upped the limit on the map. I also spoke with a few other people and decided to swap out my 13 row oil cooler for a 25 row to help aid oil cooling.

A few other track days and sessions at castle Combe Circuit. Successful days

Cocking a wheel… just

After many different decisions about a new colour I finally settle on something!

Started to prepare the car for paint:

In primer

I’d never really like the fact the standard side skirts didn’t flow the arch kit so I modified some from a MK1 LCR to fit. Also fitted a functioning roof scoop (gets so hot in the car with poly carbs)

Mk5 General Area / Cam Chain & Tensioner

Started to get a rattle on the right hand side of the engine and have decided it is time to change the cam chain and tensioner, my question is it worth replacing the VVT  adjuster also whilst there?

Plan is to buy these:
chain kit - https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/fai-timing-chain-kit-352441130
cam adjuster - https://www.autodoc.co.uk/ina/18264136
adjuster fixing - https://www.akstuning.co.uk/shop/home/996-genuine-vag-tfsi-exhaust-cam-sprocket-bolt-06d109281d.html

Also looking if there is a place for the VW tools T10020, T40080 & T10252 if anybody has good recommendations?

Hey, at least you have a lead now. Replacing the windshield wipers on these cars is a pain but if you wanna see real pain, try doing it on an Audi A4 B7. You either remove the ecu and it's case or you have a friend bend it and pray to god it doesnt break since it's a 20 year old plastic. You need to wiggle that sh*t around for at least 30 minutes to take it out but funny enough, it slides back in without issues  :signLOL:

From my experience, when you turn the ignition on and the fan turns on, it usually means some ECU issues. If you have a badly made map on the car or some ECU software error, the car refuses to start (it will crank), the epc and check engine light stay on and the radiator fan(s) turn on full blast.

The clicking you are hearing is the throttle body rapidly opening and closing, or just moving between 2 set positions.

Check wiring, check ecu I guess?

Yeah I think that's the go to.. I am a little embarrassed that I may have mashed the wiring with the windscreen wiper linkage that I replaced a few days before I started getting problems  :sad1:

Mk5 General Area / Re: Complete loss of fuel pressure after spirited driving
« Last post by ZoliWorks on November 09, 2024, 08:06:32 pm »
Funny thing, forgot to mention. After turning the car off and letting it sit, I can hear droplets noise coming from the fuel tank, as if fuel would be trickling back. Mostly notable after medium to hard driving. My money is on the pump being the culprit cause I've heard it having issues. Been meaning to replace it since half a year ago but always found something more "important" to do  :signLOL:

I'll be replacing the LPFP next month anyway with a new, complete unit, along with the N80 evap valve, the evap canister and the rubber line linking the evap canister to the metal low pressure fuel line coming out of the hpfp and the FPRV.
