Which oil to use for top up?
« on: January 05, 2016, 12:11:57 am »
I checked the oil dipstick today and the level comes up half way in the hatched area exactly in between the MIN and MAX indicators. I haven't added any oil for about a year and have an MOT due at the end of the month.
Last time I used 1 litre of Castrol Edge FST 5W30 to top up, is this the correct oil to use as I have read lots of contrary opinions on this?

If its been that long then I'd change the oil, but yeah the castrol is good stuff and 5w30 is correct spec although if modified 5w40 is recommended as it deals with the higher temps better.

Some scoff the stuff, some don't.  My ED30 at 96K miles doesn't seem to use any.  I check the dipstick once a month and it never moves.  I use Shell Helix Ultra AVL 5/30 from the stealers.

Mine is a GT FSI not a GTI but it hardly seems to use any oil at all. Last service it was given long life oil but it is now due an oil change on mileage and time. Was thinking of topping up before though.
