Boot Badge lip rust
« on: May 19, 2016, 11:52:41 am »
Hi Guys, Complete noob here and new to the forum. Just bought my first GTI  Mk5. An 05 3dr 82,000 on the clock and over the moon with it. I've wanted one for 10 years so i'm buzzing. After a good going over I though the car was in really good nick for it's age but I did notice when I gave it it's first clean a small patch of rust under boot lid badge. After some more research I can see this is a common problem. I checked the arches when I bought it and they are fine. Excuse my ignorance here but even though I bought the car this week and I'm the 3rd owner can I take it to VW for a 12 year corrosion warranty claim? From what I read I might be in for a fight. But I just wanted to know if there was any point trying. If that's a waste of time does anyone know how much this small patch would cost to be repaired? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Gaz

Yes it's still bodywork so covered. Just gotta brace yourself for them to fob you off and just keep on at them.

If the paint is original and no sign of damage they should repair it.

I've just had the same problem with rust on mine (not on the boot but the wings and sills) and I thought I'd be in for a fight when I took mine down to my local dealer.

But I was quite surprised, when I got there someone looked around my car and made the decision there and then that it would be covered under warranty, I then got a phone call a week later to get booked in. I even got a courtesy car for free.

So I'm sure it is pot luck with the dealer you take it too.

I had my wings done no problem, no fight at all.
However I have boot lid rust and they wouldn't budge.
I wanted it done, whilst it was having wings done....makes sense

They say it's edge fault and folded panel so not covered.
Believe me. I've emailed VW head office and Germany executives but all say same.

I had a good argument too.
How can wings be covered but boot panel not?
They're all panels with same paint warranty.

They also said if I took out 4 year service plan, at about £800 then they'd talk.
That's bribery. Implying if I spend money on services and good customer it'll be covered. Sorry! Warranty is not governed by how much you lick someone's arse.

Anyhow. Good luck but I've failed :(

I took mine to A B Crush last year for the tailgate. They measured the paint and said it was original, but that the damage under the badge could have been caused mechanically, either by the badge or by jewellery, both a load of nonsense. They also said that I wasn't the original owner, didn't have FVWSH and it had high mileage, none of which are written condition of the original warranty. The wings are a folded panel, but covered when the tailgate isn't?? What a load of crap.

They said they would put my case to VW.

Fast forward 10 months and still nothing (I couldn't be bothered to chase at the time). Then I chase A B Crush, they say they passed on to VW (Euro Canterbury), so I chase them. I called them, they said the bodyshop guy would call me back, he didn't. Chased them again a few weeks later and told them nobody got back to me and they said they'd get somebody to call me back again, they didn't. This is about a month ago now. I'm loosing the will to chase, but know I should, as it's a very common problem that they should fix.

Success is very dealer dependant.

This is exact line I got. I've yet to go to VW customer service but the dealer I went to gave me a reference number to do so. Managed to have one wing done which was repaired and is now rusting again...

Glad I've read this....Was planning on taking my car there to get the wing looked at. Have you had the wings done by these guys Stu?

I've just noticed that the other local option is Summers Motors in Ashford so maybe I shouls try them instead?

Hi @Lewo They are one of the best repairers of VAG cars in the country by all accounts, so I felt lucky I wasn't too far away. I'm sure they'll be happy to do your wings as that is an accepted fault (if they've not been fiddled with before). They checked mine, which were fine and said they could tell they had already been done.

I guess my issue is not with them, as although not greatly supportive, they did pass on my tailgate claim to VW. It's VW I'm having trouble getting a reply from, let alone any joy. I'll have another go next week.

Summer motors have been about years also, they repaired a friends mk2 golf GTi about 20 years ago better than new, but i'd still go to A B Crush if they're closer to you. Print off the VW TPI pdf for the wings issue, it's fairly easy to find online or DM me for a copy, take that along to support your claim if things feel like things are not going well.

Cheers, Stu.
