GTI/GT Bumper conversion... repair or aftermarket?
« on: July 01, 2016, 09:10:44 am »
I've got all the bits I need to do my face-lift on my 4Motion and so far they are all 2nd hand genuine parts. The bumper has a small split (about 2 inches) and could probably do with a respray, but is in the right colour (Black Magic LC9Z) . My question is, do I put effort into getting this repaired and maybe sprayed so I am all genuine, or do I get a quality (Thatcham/TUV insurance approved) aftermarket part from say here: http://www.newvehicleparts.co.uk/volkswagen/golf/volkswagengolf520042008gtigtsport/vw0371001-front-bumper-primed-gt-sportgti-thatch

Your opinions is, as always, valuable.

Thanks

I went aftermarket, was never happy with it, replaced it with genuine and cut a bit away to fit (behind the grille).

Unless the aftermarket ones have improved dramatically, then OEM always fits best.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Thanks @skard

I think a lot of the aftermarket parts on eBay (like the Xparts one that comes with grills etc) are not Thatham approved. The approval indicates OEM fit and production quality apparently... though this cert appears to have expired http://www.prasco.net/system/uploads/certificates/VW0371001.pdf

Listing of the same Thatcham approved aftermarket part and decent pics of the inside here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm//121309522900 showing separate splitter etc.

I have the GTI slam panel, reinforcement bar+foam, supports, fogs as well as the other bits, so no trimming for me. :)

It was over six years ago I did it and had an Xparts one - that particular bumper came with GTI 'look' fog grilles so you could use your standard fogs without modifying.

As you have all the rest in genuine parts, you'll be better off repairing the one you have, in my opinion anyway  :happy2:
