Oil Level Light
« on: December 31, 2016, 05:48:08 pm »
New to the site, currently have a 2006 Black 5dr Golf Gti. Car is standard apart form a set of Eibach Sportline springs I had fitted that completely changed the stance and handling of the car.

Anyway looking for some advice as to what's currently wrong with the car. When driving the car the check oil level light popped up on the dash, stopped the car and checked the oil level which was low so bought a 5 litre of Shell Helix Ultra Engine Oil - 5W-40. I know it recommends 5W-30 for the car however when I got the car last service this was the oil that was used. After letting the car cool overnight I added 1litre of oil and let it settle before adding anther litre I then ran the engine until it was at temperature before taking it for a 30 minute run. The light is still illuminated on the dash and after letting the oil cool I am now slightly over maximum on the dipstick.

This isn't the first time I've had an issue with oil as shortly after purchasing the car I had an oil pressure light appear and after getting towed to Automek a highly recommended garage in East Kilbride, they stripped my sump cleaned it out as it was in a bad way with gunk and sludge (even thought according to the service book it has always been serviced on time). The Oil filter was that blocked it had started being pulled through, however after a good clean and a full service car seemed to be running well. It's best to mention as well that despite the issues caused by previous owners mixing and using cheap oil the oil pump was making great pressure.

Apologies for the long winded post just trying to fully explain what's wrong, just looking to see if anyone else has had any issues with oil levels or if anyone knows why the light is still on?

Thank Sean.

Make sure the bonnet catch is working well. The is a micro switch linked to the catch which lets the car know the bonnet has been opened and the oil checked. Mine came on for a couple of days but after a decent clean out of the catch the light went out and hasn't come back on since

Ah thanks I never knew this, will have a look at maybe replacing the bonnet catch as it does seem to stick on occasion so think this will probably be the case
