Lets talk remapping

Currently I have a stock dsg gti, I am planning on remapping the car soon as I want a little bit more from it. What are peoples recommendations/experiences with remapping, reviews ect.

Ideally I want to know if i go to stage one do i need any hardware requirements, and if i decided to go for stage 2/2+ how much will this cost me all in?

Decat will help esp with a remap but this is a very downward slippery slope of no return.......I know to my cost but mine is not a golf

All the info you could ever need is a click away. Do a few searches.

But put succinctly...

Stage 1 doesn't need any hardware upgrades. Just a healthy car.

Minimum requirement for Stage 2 is a bigger downpipe (usually 3") with either a decat or sport cat. An intake and intercooler upgrade can get the best from Stage 2 software, but they're not necessarily essential.

A 2+ map specifically needs an uprated fuel pump, such as Loba or APR, and it's pretty much a prerequisite that you'll have all the other bolt-ons too; downpipe (ideally full exhaust), intercooler upgrade (S3 IC works well on k03 cars), intake (Revo, Ramair, ITG, VWR etc).

Cost depends on how you piece it together. You'll save a lot if you pick things up second hand.

Use a good mapper. R-Tech, Revo etc. Don't get drawn in by wild BHP claims of a lesser known mapper. If in doubt, ask on here.

My personal experience, with an R-Tech map, is excellent.

Best to get all the mods you can together and fitted before you go to get a map.

I regret not doing this and now have to plan to go back to rtech to adjust my map to make the most of the new mods which will cost me another map.

Same here. Hindsight and all that.

I never thought I'd go Stage 2 around the time I went Stage 1. And I never thought I'd eventually be eyeing up a k04 when I went Stage 2.

There is however, something satisfying about building up the power in increments. It's almost like I feel I'm not missing out on anything. Which I know doesn't sound logical

That page contains all the info you need with regards to hardware and what to check before remapping. They are generally regarded as the best tuners of our cars too.

Exactly that. 

Get your DP, HPFP and intercooler on and THEN get it mapped.  A map is a map, so no point paying multiple times to get to this so called "Stage 2+" when you can get that done from the get go.  Don't feed the coffers of all these over priced tuners and parts sellers unnecessarily.

Agreed, especially for track work.  For road use it depends on your local roads and traffic.  Where I live it's impossible to get over 100, so brakes aren't high on my priority list.
