Turbo-back exhaust - Reasonable fitment price?
« on: August 12, 2021, 06:36:16 pm »
Hi all

I took the plunge with recent eBay discounts and got my mitts on a full 3" turbo back exhaust from Gravity Performance (just under 500 quid for the lot).

My questions are 1. how long should this take a fitment centre to fit, given no downpipe bolts breaking and needing to be drilled, and 2. how much would you expect this standard fitment to cost?

The questions are off the back of just having the system fitted today and still reeling from the charges from my local fitment centre  :sad1:

Side note: everything you've read that it's not going to be Milltek/Cobra quality is true (I had to shake a couple clumps of weld loose that had fallen into the cat  ), but it's incredible bang for your buck for a full stainless system and I'll be creating a YT vid to share before/after, as well as update with my long term experience in a few months.

I was charged 2 hours of labour at my local VW specialist when I had my used turbo back exhaust installed. So £144 but I was having lots of other stuff done at the same time so couldn’t tell you if that time was accurate or not but gives you an idea.

Thanks @fakie1977 , £150-200 sounds in line with what I would expect, which me makes what my local fitment centre pricing seem utterly ludicrous.

They charged me a total of £450  :slap: (or 5hrs x £75 excl. tax), which I just can't fathom. The fact that I'm in SW London means I would be paying a premium, but not to this level. Added to this, they wasted my time by calling me down (only a 10 mins down the road, but still) to figure out why the fitting kit was incomplete - the technician had misplaced a V-band clamp and found it on their workbench when I pointed it out. I had a fight with the workshop manager about his staff obviously being incompetent if they're unable to fit an exhaust shop in under 3hrs and they wasted my time on top of it, but he was having none of it and refused to compromise on the bill.

I guess I have no recourse here, but lesson learnt that I need to do a little more research on fitment centres in future.

wth 5 hours for a two hour job  :scared:

I did turbo back on my own car and other Gti’s owners who knew me came to me for all their cam followers and DP exhaust fitments. £120 to fit catback as long as it bolts straight up and £300 for turbo back
