Dark blue mk5 DSG - 150k miles - he's old but has good bodywork and no electrical problems...starts in the cold too! I haven't had him long but he drives well apart from a couple of niggles.
I don't think its been mapped as it has a custom turbo-back exhaust with a decatted straight-through pipe but the engine management light comes on with a P0420 error code...however it seems to have more power than my mk7 GTi, though that could just be because it's louder
Main thing right now is to pass MOT - mid January - and get the old guy running smooth before I worry about performance. Basically the wastegate rattle and steering rack has started knocking slightly so those are my late spring projects, forget working on the driveway in winter!
I had the exhaust visually checked to confirm the lack of a cat and the emissions tested before I put it through the MOT and it failed big time, approx 2.5 times over the passing limit. Would the lack of a cat cause these high readings or because the car hasn't been mapped (I assume) to use the custom exhaust system and its burning rich?
I've checked posts here and magnaflow or borla sports cats have been mentioned as best - if I get one like this, do I just have it welded to the existing straight-through pipe??
https://www.magnaflow.com/products/59959-catalytic-converter-magnaflow-standard-grade-federal-epa-compliant-universal-catalytic-converterIf I fit a sports cat, and the car hasn't been mapped, will it require mapping to limit the emissions for the MOT and to stop the engine management light flashing or would stock ECU be ok?
Alternatively as the car still has both oxygen sensors fitted, I guess it would make sense to just fit a stock cat in order to pass the MOT - but if it has been mapped and I fit a stock cat, would I need to flash the ECU back to stock for the same reasons?
If I get a cheap stock cat from europarts/ebay would that be a direct replacement for the straight-through pipe without hacking the custom exhaust as I would like to keep it (sounds good!)? If this depends on the current exhaust system is there a way to determine what manufacturer made the exhaust, e.g. if its a milltek (wishful thinking!) I could purchase a sports cat to match.
Talking of mapping, if I do need to do this, would you recommend a DIY approach or can you recommend someone in Birmingham?
Awesome forum guys - first post, sorry its a bit boring (cats
) but hopefully someone can help me
