Is this service quote competitive?
« on: April 07, 2010, 08:37:21 pm »

My 06 GTI has just reached the 50k mark and has just started telling me it needs a service.  Its been a long time since I used a main dealer for servicing and so am unsure if what’s detailed below is considered standard pricing.

Thanks in advance

MOT £54.85
Service including Spark plugs, oil, pollen & air filters £308.32
Brake fluid service £60.40
Air con service £75.00
If you have the brake & air con service done this month, the both can be done for £99.00.

Thats a high price, I work at an independant garage and we charge £170 for the service you have listed, £35 for brake fluid change and a place round the corner does the aircon service for £30.

Thats using all genuine VW parts as well as a multipoint inspection, stamp in the book, service light reset and diagnostic check.

(not trying to advertise, just offer advice)  :happy2:

Service price is stand and deliver style, should be much closer to £200. They do love to charge at main dealer though  :fighting:

I have found variations of up to 40% for the VAG std service at main dealers. I live in Cheltenham and work in Oxford and have found that asking at Gloucester, Cheltenham, Cirencester and Oxford main dealers for the same service (50k miles) resulted in 40% difference in proce for the same work. I went for the cheapest (which at 50k miles was Oxford ~ £200) 2 months later, for the misses GTI ed30, Cirencester was miles cheaper, just depends how much work they have on and how hungry they are. Cheltenham VW (my local) are always prices as per the std VW menu, as a result they only get warranty work ;-)

Yes VW service costs seem to be whatever the fancy on the day. Its worth checking VW dealer websites. They sometime have offers such as 10-20% of service cost etc.

I just had the 50k service done on Mrs A's Audi A4 avant at a VAG (SEAT) main dealer for £160. While i waited on a saturday morning.

My advise would be to shop about.

Bristol,

I'm waiting on a quote from a independant  VW specialist who i used all the time for my old mk3 GTI.

The Quote is normal and is adverage for a main dealer. The reason why the quote may be a little higher than ted in the shed is the oil which is used. Dealers use Castrol slx longlife 3 which is 13.99 + vat a ltr. The labour will be roughly 1.4-1.6 hours. Also indis very rarely use genuine parts, which inturn will not carry a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty on the parts. Also if you ever want any goodwill from VW and you have 1 service done outside the network, then forget it. I think the best you will get is 10% off the service. All in all, you get what you pay for.

My local VW Dealer quoted me £345 for a first service - thats just engine oil and filter!
Another VW dealer - about 15 miles away - quoted me £107 for the same job!
Hence I took the nice country drive to the dealer further away and saved a good £200!
