Please help with my new GTi and a strange noise!
« on: May 18, 2010, 06:47:43 pm »
Hi guys,

I've only owned my GTi for a few days and there is a noise that is worry me - it maybe normal however I have noticed a rumble coming from the engine area when at low revs and releasing the clutch. This is mainly herd when pulling gently away and I can also feel it through the clutch pedal! Is this normal?

Thanks for any advice!

If its like a Diesel type noise then probably normal but other than that I can't really help I'm afraid. If I remember correctly the timing belt, tensioner and fuel rail are all common causes of funny engines noises on the MK5 and they seem to be a bit notorious for sounding diesel like at idle/low revs.

There's plenty of threads about strange noises coming from GTI's on here so maybe try the search function? Failing that there's plenty of people on here who are more technically minded that will likely post a reply.

Sorry I can't offer any more help but I'm sure someone will be able to narrow it down for ya  :happy2:

Thanks for the info. I would say that the noise I'm experiencing is the same as that mentioned in the thread you have linked to. Interestingly though, I popped into my local VW dealership this morning and the workshop forman took it for a test drive and said all was perfect and nothing to worry about. So, either I'm worrying too much - or he is aware of the problem and knows it is best left alone..

Hi jcm76,

I bought an ED30 a couple of weeks ago fella (just joined the forum today).  My car is making the same noise, I know exactly what you mean and it worried me a little bit too.  I will be having a word with VW next week about it as I'm due a new front tyre off them (hopefully 2).

Mine is a 3 door manual, no sunroof, 1 prev owner, unmapped.

what you are describing sounds like the normal running characeristics of the car. I does sound pretty crap (diesel like) at idle.
I have recently had my timing belt, tensioner ect done and the engine noise has been cut by half, so maybe worth checking out the last time it was changed - im sure vw recommend every 4 years or 60k .... Correct me if im wrong guys. :happy2:
