'Diesel' idle sound on Mk5 GTI
« on: April 17, 2011, 09:33:42 pm »
Am new to Mk5 GTI's, but have done a bit of research into engine characteristics/faults etc, and I think it was a thread on ClubGTI which mentions a 'diesel' like idle sound from the 2.0FSI, saying this is ok??

Mine seems to suffer from this loud diesel idle noise when warm. Is it anything I should be concerned about or is it just the norm?

The car has done 41,000 and if the service history is to be believed, had a cam belt change at 31,500. It sounds fine when driving.

Any help to put my mind at rest much appreciated.

Normal mate. If only it had the MPG characteristics of a diesel too!

Cheers fella.  So yours does this as well?

Is it something to do with the direct injection system running slightly lean or something for MPG?  Glad it's not a nasty problem, but hardly a silky, sporty sound when you're at the lights.  VW fail....

I'm no mechanic but I believe from reading the various threads on here that its either the high pressure fuel rail OR the cam chain. Have a search for similar threads as its quite well covered. Mine does it but did get less noticeable when I had the cambelt replaced.

Like you say though, hardly awe inspiring........until you get going :driver:
