Full Lock Grinding Noise
« on: September 18, 2009, 08:53:27 pm »
Chaps,

Unfortunately, the moron width of my drive means that when pulling into it, the cars on full right lock each and every time.

When on full lock, I've noticed a mild grinding noise. Not serious, but it's noticeable.
It doesn't seem to do it on for full left lock, but then this get 75% less usage than the right.

I guess this raises three questions;

Is there anything I can check/replace to aid the situation?
Is it imminent that the PAS system will need replacing sooner than later because of my housing layout?
I'd like to think this is covered under the used car warranty my vehicle has (I'm not looking forward to re-checking the exclusions section of the Warranty guide book!). Fingers crossed it is.

My two previous cars had similar creeks on the PAS, so this is hardly surprising, but I sold both before they needed attention and I'd rather the Golf be in a fitter state seeing as I'm two months into ownership :happy2:
Cheers,

Peter.
Pete

Full lock grinding is a known "cosmetic" rather than "safety" issue on the Mk5 caused by the steering rack, if in warranty it will be replaced.

I have had it done on both my 05 plate GTI and 08 plate ED30  :happy2:

A large number of the A5 platform cars have been affected with dodgy steering racks, hopefully your will be one.

How old is it?

Cheers.

Yes, A5 platform covers the Octavia II, Leon II, Golf 5 and A3.

I'd say you were in the ballpark for the steering rack issues, I don't have my info with me here but I'd suggest a call to a main dealer.  If you have a full VW service history then you'll probably get it sorted FOC as a goodwill.

Ahh, cracking call then tbh.

Ironically its in today anyway to replace the manifold motor and pressure flaps (?!).
It does indeed have FVWSH and more importantly perhaps, its under the used car warranty which I paid 4ton' for, so getting it replaced shouldn't be an issue whatsoever.

Is this something that you'd do straight away in my position, or would you wait another 10-20k?
I feel I'll renew the used car warranty after it expires anyway.

Cheers.
Pete

Get it done when suits, the revised racks should be ok.

Sorry to dig this up again but I have a question relating to this steering rack issue...

Does this 'cosmetic noise' occur while steering or while moving with the wheel turned?

The reason I ask is that I can turn my wheel lock to lock with no noise while the car is stationary however if I apply some lock then pull away I get a grinding noise - louder if I pull away faster, eg, at a busy junction.  Does this problem sound like the normal faulty steering rack issue or is it likely caused by some other steering/suspension fault?

Thanks  :happy2:
