Door lock
« on: March 18, 2012, 09:24:23 pm »
Recently my drivers door hasn't been unlocking with the fob every time. It's not all the time but is happening more & more often. It still unlocks fine with the key inserted. Any ideas what may be wrong and how to fix it?

Your door lock mechanism is dying. Its a common fault in Mk5's. My passenger one went last year.

VW charge £340 to replace it at a dealer. You can get the part form eurocarparts for about £90 and an hour labour at an independent garage (£60-£80) to install. There are a few guides on here for taking the external door leaf off if you want to do it yourself.

I was afraid it was on its way out. I already have 2 different keys. One does the ignition, the other does the door, glovebox & airbag deactivator. Surely I don't need 3 keys  :signLOL:

Sounds like it probably wants a new door lock module. You can pick them up off ebay. I got one for mine for about 30 quid. About £120 from the dealers though. Its not a bad job to do actually. You have to remove the outer door skin to gain access. Not as bad as it sounds. You leave the door card on. I would get it done as soon as though. When my passenger door went it deadlocked and couldn't open it from inside or out.

Door skin removal.

You only need a door lock module. it wont affect your keys. (you can stick to only 2 keys )

Nice one.

Its amazing how much can be saved over dealer prices if you are a little clever.

Good luck!
