Coasting =  Neutral, slowing down in gear is not "coasting" its just driving efficiently, if the person behind you needs to see brake lights to realise he is catching up/getting closer he should not be on the road!

Coasting is coasting. Not all drivers are as alert as us quite clearly

Sorry, but coasting is when you put it into neutral and let it roll.

He means leaving it in gear and just letting off the accelerator so it slows down with the gears. If some body behind cannot see that the gap is closing between them and you then they are stupid. I follow cars that slow down without braking all the time!

If you decided to let off the accelerator in 5th gear and then dropped it to 3rd or something then that is dangerous lol.

67.7 average mpg on the way to work this morn. Rush hour traffic, 90% motorway and the rest is 30/40mph. Mines a 2.0 140 but remapped

So you either have to be on the accelerator or the brake all the time?! 

Nothing wrong with slowing down in gear, or making use of engine braking as my driving instructor used to say.

Coasting, as clarified by many, is when you're either in neutral or have the clutch down and is dangerous and wastes fuel.

iMHO the people who are constantly on the brakes on the motor way is much more disruptive and dangerous than lifting off and letting the car slow with engine breaking and wind resistance, all drivers should constantly be paying attention to distances of all cars around you.  I allows look ahead and will back off the throttle in anticipation of traffic ahead, I had a 230 mile round trip this morning at motor way speeds up to redditch and back hitting m25 at rush hour twice and got 35mpg and still have 190 miles on trip comp.

As said use d mode accelerate gently maintain a steady speed and gentle right foot and you will see figures improve

I got about 37mpg on the motor way going to pick up my exhaust last sat. averaging about 70mph

If you see traffic ahead, let off the accelerator and let the car roll along a bit.

Now that is bloody dangerous, as the traffic behind don't know what you are doing

Yet taught by the IAM, which I had to pass an advanced test to join, 0bserved by a serving traffic officer in the passenger seat.It's the person behind who is the bad driver if they are too close or not paying enough attention to see the car in front slowing down and act accordingly.

I have an A3 2.0 TDI, guessing you got something similar. Aslong as you keep a steady foot you'll be fine, does it have a trip comp/mpg display?
