Brakes please help!
« on: June 25, 2013, 06:07:23 pm »
Hello all,

I have no idea about cars but ive just had my car taken to VW for a service and they've just priced me £650 for new Disc brakes and Brake pads, aswell as new Tyres adding adding another £450, not going to lie i was a little bit sick.

Anyway i didnt realise it said Disc brakes until after ordering my brake pads, i did my research and ordered front and rear Hawk HPS Pads for £160 now im worried do i need to get Hawk Disc Brakes? The dealer who has sold the Pads to me is offering 'Brake engineering front and rear Disc's' for £110 is this a good make and good price?

I just use my cars on weekend to get home, i do enjoy putting the pedal to the metal. I just thought Buy nice or buy twice! I want sharp trustworthy brakes.

Also Brake fluid? ive been reading alot about this but im a bit confused. Is this worth changing? i havent had a brake fluid change before also can someone tel me the one best to buy, where from and the quantity id need.

As i said before i have no clue on cars so please can you keep it simple for me no abbreviations lol.

Your help guys would be greatly appreciated as im pulling out my hair as we talk.

Hey Postie hi and welcome to a great forum !  :happy2:

Unless the hawk disc are grooved, I could not see you needing them, the hawk pads are a great pad, I have a set for sale in the sale section nearly half that price you paid.

You could get a great set-up for 650 quid as the dealers was asking, they do know how to charge...

I would maybe as DaveB1970 if he had any brake setups for sale, as you could pay that for a GOOD SET-UP.
you would need to get your post count up first, before you can pm.

Otherwise a decent set of discs like Brembo or even Oem ones would be suitable.

The oem brake fluid from the dealers would be suitable.

Have a quick search with the search button at the top of the page to help find some answers, or google.

hope that helps you out a bit!
If it's not broke, Mod it.....

Welcome.

An alternative, if DIY isn't your thing (it's certainly not mine) is to find a decent independent.  A few searches here will turn one up, wherever you are.

Shadow blue DSG 5 door with leather, sunroof, 18" Monzas, MFSW.

Hey guys since youve been so helpful can anyone tell me how i can upgrade a little more?

Ive read quite alot of reviews with people saying 'most likely reason for the loss in boost was the DV that VW revised on the later models' is this something i should get checked out because i havent had a look from the first day i bought it and mine does sometime seem to pull away and then other times nothing! If so can anyone advise me on the best part and could you please provide me a link?

Next is Milltek exhaust how much am i looking to make a difference? i would like sound over performance to be honest for now, so is this link something i should be looking at:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GOLF-MK5-GTI-EXHAUST-MILLTEK-2-0T-CAT-BACK-NON-RES-LOUDER-WITH-EC-TUV-SSXVW147/330540522663?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D8657406540761459617%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D330540522663%26

I really dont want to spend more than £500 because ive already spent about a Grand on everything listed and light bulbs, window wipers and windscreen replacement and now to top it off having my car look at because the fan sounds like its going to take off!

Also has anyone got any past experience how much labour would cost to fit this?

Sorry guys if i sound like a tool but your help would be most appreciated and links to what you are talking about would be fantastic!

Search is your friend.  :happy2:

Get a Revision G Diverter Valve, P/N 06H 145 710 G

Cat back won't give you any gains, just noise, about £500-£700 depending on Res or Non Res. look at Milltek or BCS. I have a BCS Sports Powervalve TBE and love it, look at their cat back systems, nice a stelth while pottering about and when you go WOT all hell's let lose.

Basic Cat Back should be no more than 30 mins to change, tops.
