mk5 Golf gti rattle
« on: September 23, 2013, 03:05:41 pm »
Hi,

I have only just got my car and so far I really like it.
The one thing I have noticed though is that there is a rattling sound from the engine bay area when either letting off or just idling the engine.
If I apply some acceleration to the car it is fine, sound goes away.

Any ideas? is it normal? doen't seem to effect the drive at all.

Edit: I have just read on another forum that the type of fuel used can cause these symptoms (the fuel pump is making the sound) and using 98 ron solved the noise/rattle. I will try this tonight (the car is currently sitting with a small amount of 95ron in it)

What kind of rattle - metallic? Is it an exhaust heatshield?
Look at your alternator pulley and fanbelt area, is the tensioner bouncing madly?
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Sounds like metallic, like exhaust is shaking. Coming from drivers side engine bay. I am going to take it to my local vw indy tomorrow too look at.

I have a rattle too
Whenever you are off throttle (either when you've revved it or are coasting down from speed) you get a rattle

We've inspected it above and below.
Seems to come from the exhaust/turbo/back of the engine bay somewhere.
However mine only does it when engine is up to temperature it does not do it when cold or just started.

We suspect it's exhaust related namely a piece of cat or something. It's not terminal and I just live with it now. We'll fix it one day! I'm 99% sure it's exhaust, heat shield or trim piece SOMEWHERE.

J.

Yeah I took it to my local VW indy this morning and it is coming from the cat. is it right that there are two cats on these cars?
