If I hadn't found this (or the old) forum, I suspect I'd have gone along with longlife servicing. Have a read of this:

This is the actual list of specific operating requirements for LongLife regime:

Mileage:  more than 30 miles per day.
Type of Journey:  Motorway and main road driving.  Mainly longer distance journeys.  Constant speeds.
Conditions:  Normal engine loading - eg, with little or no towing, with little or no hill climbs.  Normal vehicle loading.
Driving style:  Moderate acceleration, moderate braking, engine revs mainly below 3000rpm.
I suspect most of those who buy a GTI don't drive it like a normal diesel for motorway driving. Hence longlife isn't suitable. Funnily enough, VW recommend longlife oil for the GTI.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

madness on his part yes, hence why i got it as cheap as I did.

It got home without turning a wheel, and has a 1/4 mile trip for its cam belt change on the 30th, so I'm not taking any risks. clearly the previous owner did, but it runs sweet as a nut and the underside is immaculate.

I'll admit it did put me off initially though

You didn't explain you had just bought it !

I thought all GTIs were set on T&D servicing as opposed to Longlife?
