Single mass conversion... Gearbox change.
« on: March 06, 2014, 06:30:35 pm »
Evening all.

Basically, my gearbox is shagged on my TDI & needs changing.
My friend who is a mechanic has advised me not to bother going for DMF and says I should just get a single mass conversion kit and fit that which he states will keep the prices down also...

can anyone elaborate on this? I am not at all mechanically minded!

Cheers  :happy2:

From what I been told a single mass on a diesel can be very noisy. Mortygttdi told me he had one on his MK5 GT 140 and would never have one again. If you want any sort of refinement stick with the DMF.

Just found this:

The vibrations a DMF soaks up has to go somewhere
Though 6spd boxes seem better matched to an SMF than a 5spd from what I've read
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

I have a Valeo SMF and clutch kit that xjay1337 kindly gave me off his old TDI. It's just as quiet as the DMF was before it started failing.

Excellent news  :happy2: I will get on the hunt for one, any ideas where the best place to fetch one is?

This company (link below) usually have them on offer for £168.75 (cheapest I've found anywhere when I was looking).  They aren't on offer at the moment but if you call the number in the photo and explain you wanted to buy one when they had them up for £168.75 but by the time you had saved up they had gone back to £225 I'm sure they'll do you a deal :).  I've had it in my watch list for months and it's never £225 for that long, they always put a sale on and drop the price to £165.75.

Edit - Also I'm assumed you have a 1.9tdi.  Hopefully I was right! :).

Yep I had the Southbend SMF and uprated clutch pack, it was very noisy, it came out in the end. on a petrol engine fine but a diesel I wouldn't recommend at all. Some people may not be put off with the noise but I am very particular about my cars and it has to be 100% or it gets replaced.

If you go for the SMF and uprated clutch then dont go for any uprated mounts or bushes, I had the pendulum mount bush in and I couldn't get reverse or 1st gear?? sounds weird that a clutch can do this sort of stuff but there you go.

Speak to Scott or Ryan at Darkside Development im sure theyll sort you out with the right advice and a good price
